- February has arrived and Phil tells us it'll be an early spring (yay!). I'm still working on small, easy, free/almost free tiny projects around the house to lift our spirits during these winter days. Today I'm sharing some TLC projects in my unfitted kitchen. Just a bit of paint and a bit of cleaning can make a world of difference!
We designed our kitchen seven years ago. It was my first time ever designing anything and I didn't know much, but I knew I loved the old-fashioned kitchen dressers and beautiful big work tables I'd seen in old movies and, of course, Downton Abbey.
Since then "For the Love of Kitchens" has premiered on the Magnolia Channel, and unkitchens seem to be what everyone wants!

You have such a lovely kitchen. My husband and I have bought a house to restore. We have purposefully left the kitchen off the immediate project list. We won’t touch it until we have lived here for at least 3 years. Although I desperately miss a dishwasher. I find little changes delightful and bigger projects lots of fun too. There is something so magical in seeing what you imagine come to life.

I enjoy your calm presentation and you remind me of my mother who had 6 children on a farm. She had a way of making the most of any situation. I'm a senior citizen now and live in the city but I try to do the small things and really get a kick out of seeing the changes. I added a month ago a long cabinet wit 8 drawers. What I've found is that drawers are so much easier to use than cabinets. Above this long cabinet, I've added (when I moved in 3 years ago) a glass dry erase board. I am a retired teacher and it is my remembrance of my classroom boards. It's my organizational place with a large calendar, notes, and I found seasonal posters from Temu that are very cheap. It adds that homey look to my kitchen and reminds me of "unkitchen."

Have you thought about using two small kitchen cabinets to make a tiny L shaped bench? Then use one of the chairs. It would keep your walls from getting beat up. Plus, visually it wouldn’t look so full and cluttered without the tall chairs taking so much space up.

Enjoyed this. As my husband and I are mid 70's, we find ways that are easy on us, as we can not kneel nor climb a high ladder as before, so peel and stick is a good option instead of wallpaper. I did an area in our kitchen, a delft blue with dutch design, and a small narrow wall that really served no purpose, on that I put a brick and ivy pattern. I will not hang anything on that wall as it would take away from the look.There are so many nice peel and stick patterns now. I am working on a very small mudroom area that I will be laying down a floorcloth I had a lady make me. The pattern is old colonial brick. Floor cloths are very durable, easy to clean and not apt to make us trip. Making my home have character and an inviting atmosphere is what I aim for. Your home speaks this too. In Joy

I live in an apartment in a 120 yr old building so it's pretty limited in what I can do, both as a rental and with the old style layout, so I pretty much only do small changes. But I think my personal style is pretty stable so I am not inclined to make that many really big changes anyway. I really enjoy the difference that adding a piece of art or changing the mantle or adjusting something in the kitchen makes, because it usually shifts things enough to keep it interesting without discarding things i love to have around me.
Yes. Those are the things that really make the space anyway. And it’s so enjoyable 🌷
I love your kitchen and your decorating ideas. Thank you for the idea of putting the sheet pans in a basket. Actually, I have room for mine in the cabinet over the double oven, but recently my husband bought a huge, heavy cutting board and a pizza peel. The former is too heavy to move above the oven and both are too big to fit in the lower cabinets. I'm going to look for a narrow basket for them and then set them on the floor next to our portable island.
Awesome! Yes, our big heavy boards are so much better off on the floor too. For one I’m not afraid of them falling on me😅

Yes I agree what you say about titivating parts of the house it does make you feel good.Our kitchen is part” unfitted” ,we removed one wall of cabinets so I could put my dresser there.I have my flour jars and nice pottery mixing bowls and cookware on the shelves .We removed some cabinet doors from some other cabinets but I would love to have glazed doors there ,something I’m trying to convince hubby to make.I have a tiny unworkable antique gas stove next to my dresser where I store my baking tins in the oven and an antique bread bin for extra flour and vintage kitchen stuff on top .

So far some wonderful classic kitchen Pyrex and oven dishes as well as crocheted lace curtain that look like they were made for my kitchen windows. The floor layer just arrived to start the flooring in the new bathroom and laundry room. Our place used to be a country store and glassier built 1900 so we have taken the old goods rooms to make a laundry and bathroom. During the summer there are many flea markets to peruse so we are looking forward to that😁

Try Fusion's Ultra Grip in the chairs. I have had a lot of success with it and surfaces that are hard to paint permanently.

I'm not sure but I think Rustolem paint sticks to metal well...for your refrigerator
