I do this all the time with my M560s. It can be a bit unpleasant if I let it go in all by themselves without guiding, but never hurt.

All of my cables are Monoprice: 3.5, RCA, etc. Theyre ridiculously well made for their insanely low price. I think their mission statement should be, Monoprice: showing how much you're being ripped off because of branding.

Protip. Take the stock pads apart, get that ring with the pegs and magnets on it's own, slip it into HM5 pads. Any pads. Swap em out. Enjoy life and ear pads that are the right shape.

Took bout 12 hrs of breaking them in and they sound badass. Got the Sony pads as suggested here and I dunno why but I swear they sound better with the Sony pads than the default ones (not to mention way more comfy. The default covers have tiny holes for a toddler. They are NOT the same as in the video, they have changed them since this review. The slits are thin and JUST barely as wide as the driver. IMO differ pads is a must). Also to Z Reviews: Just set a nickle between the wooden caps and the outside of the drivers. Don't notice any sound change and helps keep some noise out and in. Thanks for the review if it wasn't for you jizzing over these I woulda never looked at em. Got them on sale for $150, HELLUVA upgrade from my 6 yr old Vmoda LPs.
Also dunno if I just have a fat head or if they changed how much tension the headband has but to me it is JUST the right amount of tension where it's snug but not fatiguing. I didn't need to glue or tape the pads on. It has enough tension just hold them there just fine, like no issues at all while moving.
Also I saw you mention how much metal is on these, but what I didn't realize is they are basically a solid block of metal. Like both sides of the speakers/drivers.. Like 99.99% metal and its not thin either, both sides of the drivers are solid as a rock... Or thick metal. I feel like I could knock someone out with this if I decided to smack someone with them.
On my PC I can get them to like 95% the bass vs clarity I want but I want just a TAD more bass and the PC can't do it without ducking out the treble. Need an amp.
The inside looks differ than his too. Like when looking into his pads at the driver, the driver is now covered with some kind of micro screen rather than a cheap fabric sticker, AND there's a very thin fabric around the outside of the driver where the pads rest against. The quality has ACTUALLY gone up since this vid. Stock pads are making my whole house smell like new sneakers.. IT's almost giving me a headache...

I just want to add that the design of the current m560 has changed a bunch. The headphone now clamps tightly to your head, so you can do some headbangs without them falling off. the stock pads are different, they still feel nice but the hole for the ear is now much, much smaller. Making it pretty uncomfortable which isn't helped by the clamping. The changed between closed and open isn't so significant anymore. and the cloth that covers the drivers isn't on the pads anymore but now glued onto the cans. Idk how this would change quality but it's significantly different than their first batch. Oh, and the cable now is very coily.
So the clamping is better, the differential sound between open and closed is smaller, and the wire and pads are worse. Take that as you will. They are still very excellently built, made from metal and don't feel like they will ever break. It's so nice to have a headphone that feels like its worth 200 bux. It's a shame that the new replacements, the 565s, use the same frame as the 1060s which don't feel nearly as sturdy as these.
Does the first batch have a better sounding open mode than the second batch?
Btw, have you tried them with the Sony pads?
Do you know how to changed the replace the pad on those?

Many thanks for this review.. I was also looking for a planar headphone that not only looks fantastic but sounds good for only £137.00 (British pounds) In fact they really sound awesome.
After purchasing the M560 I burned them in for about 8-10 hours. I also modified the removal wooden plates by placing a 5mm depth washer to create a semi open headphone without defacing the wooden plates with holes and bwoy these now sounds even better.
b/c of this review I ordered them on Amazon last night, got them delivered today. I love the fact you can either be open or closed. I actually prefer closed. The Sony pads will be here Monday but already with less than 30 min I'm loving them, I do wish they had an easy way to tell whats left / right since the engraving on the inner band is hard to see. Will probably just put a red stick there or something on the "R".

Now they are a must with these headphones, the stock pads have been made worse with smaller holes for your ears. This is the sacrifice they made for better clamp and headband tension. Unless that's how they have always been and you just cant tell because the video makes them look wider. Because mine are not even 2 knuckle unless you stretch the pleather

I REALLY wish you could talk more about the sound. You did say a few things but I just have many more questions.
The sound demo is the only way of properly finding out, but what if you're not able to carefully monitor how it sounds because of video compression and current gear?
Could you just say/write a paragraph on how it sounds in your videos?
For instance, are they sibilant? Is the bass excessive, light, fast, slow? Are the mids recessed?

Yeah I get into a groove and reviews just happen. These are all cup off notes.. Not sibilant but far reaching. Not bass excessive although warmer in tone. FAST. Mids/vocals are not recessed.

Was looking for my first open back heaphones. Decided to take the plunge with the Massdrop HE-350s since they were cheap and I was looking forward to modding them. So I was watching this review yesterday, paused half-way through, went to massdrop and cancelled my order; just 5 minutes before the drop ended. Ordered these today from their ebay page. It costs an extra $57 for import duty/taxes etc. Overall it cost about the same as the AKG K712pro, which I was also considering. Can't wait to hear them!
I bought these a couple years back because of this. Much appreciated. They're discontinued now and they're my favorite pair of headphones. I haven't heard anything close to these before or since. I tried on my Audio Technica headphones recently which I haven't worn in about a year (old model but terrific bass and ZMF lambskin pads) and I just couldn't.... Bullets for a shooter would sound fun, but NOTHING else would. I'm ruined. I'm spoiled. Planars4ever.

Don't drill the wodden closures. Just add a spacer over the center magnet. Maybe a piece of leather or cloth. Hell even a washer.

Or a 1/2'' x 1/8'' disk magnet. No reason to add glue or do permanent damage. Might as well keep it modular.
Also, you want to add a piece of foam between the magnet and the cover, if you want the headphones to not leak, while also absorbing those destructive reflections.

Wow, this is really something special. I heard the sound demo and really the vocals, mids and imaging may be the the special point of this headphone. Glad you pick it up and reviewed it, I thought we may never see another giant killers headphone since the SHP9500.

Just a suggestion, regarding the loose headband. What i did is run a strip of fabric over the headband, with the preferred length for my likeness and surprisingly it worked, at least now it supports it weight. It might look ugly but it definitely fix the problem.
My Mee Audio HD-21s I modified by drilling holes in the cups and putting two types of foam in them. They sounded almost like an open pair, just more umph, no echo, clear and needless to say, any closed headphone that's not my HD598Cs will be drilled to be semi-open.

You destroyed the look Z.. magnet spacer would have been a better proposition.
You could also apply sound dampening and absorption materials to the inside of the wooden ear cups.
For people using a breakout box - Make 2 1/4" Mono to 3.5mm "Stereo" Cables that are Tip > Tip & Ring, Sleeve to Sleeve both will be identical "Mono" cables. For those using a 4-Pin XLR do the same thing but use heat shrink or Sleeving to identify Right from Left.

Got them after two months of waiting, paired with a Fiio Q1 they sound amazing.
Fine review Zeos, while Audeze and Hifiman are at a 'dollar dollar bill y'all' price doubling now turned price tripling contest (Lcd-3 $2k> Lcd-4 $4k and he-1000 $3k>Edition-6 $6k planars), Monoprice appears to be playing it safe and target the lower end of the market that the 'big' guns are over looking. Not surprised at all that it's a Monoprice brand that had rolled up their sleeves, Oppo pm-1, hifiman 400i/s, Fostex mk's got us to the door but Monoprice got us inside for now far as planar quality and built at a lower cost.

Buy a few sheets of perforated 0.5mm steel sheet.
Cut to the same dimensions as the stock headphones plate with tin snips.
Use very small nuts and bolts to replicate the location pins.
Stick pads, any pads you like, to the plate and there you have your own interchangeable magnetic pads.
Are you gonna be reviewing the Monoprice tube amp too? I was thinking about getting the bundle since I've been using easy to power headphones thus far.
I hope the 560 and 1060's are giant killers I am tired of looking to upgrade my sennheiser hd600's for ones that cost 1000+ and reading reviews of people that still like the 600's over the flagships at this point my price limit is $500 and I will just let the technology catch up.

Yeah, technology is developing fast, for the cheaper and better things. How can good headphones from last decade can only be beaten by little margin by something a lot more expensive today? Even if this Monoprice one has sound quality and build quality about the same as the old phones, at least they are much cheaper. Saved money can be used for a good amp, dac or an expensive paint job.

sorry for the late reply. I got the M-TRACK hub for the lsr305. Its a great fit for me since I don't need/want any inputs.
I love having a nice big knob on the desk. I would recommend it if you don't care about mic inputs etc.
I use the built in headphone amp in my blue yeti microphone. The M-track headphone amp is not that great.

I think they are more comfortable than the 400i and the el8. I tried both at audio 46 and wasn't blown away. I feel like I'm getting close to the performance in these with a better form factor for my head ... and it's only 199. Can't beat it
Jerbien Manawatao when you say "better" it depends if you're talking about comfort, portability, bass quality, treble quality,..... if you're talking about detail, then according to Zeos, yes, in that regard they are better than the 400i

I came in here, saw this review, looked it up, and found an m565. So then I come back to this review, look at the pads, they are fixed, but then I see the driver has changes, things have changes, though they are the same price, and it appears it was because of zeos. Now I dont know if they sound good, I just want a shit-ton of people to jump on the bandwagon before I do to see if they are worth the same as these. Does anybody here own these?

If he's being honest, which I'm sure he is; he's saying these compare to Audeze and HE-560. Those blow the t50rp out of the water. So I'd definitely go with the monoprice, if you're not concerned about "brand names" and such. You will probably want to upgrade those pads though. Or you could wait and spend a few extra bucks on the new monoprice model coming out.
BlairTech Buy the monoprices. the supply of mod friendly t50 mk2 is depleted, and while the mk3's are amazing stock, they are much harder to mod properly in order to achieve acceptable comfort.
how are they much harder to mod to achieve comfort? the mounting system for the mk3 earpads is similar to most headphones. if it was the mk2 then I would understand.
CupcakeBattle It isn't that the mk3's are hard to get pads onto. it's that they are uncomfortable stock, so much that for many, new pads are a must. the problem is that most pads just ruin the sound and you have to do some serious modding to make them sound any good after adding new pads. this is because the stock pads are pancakes and using any other pads increases distance between your ear and the driver.
New pads on the MK3's make them sound better. It's easy to do and there are two options that Zeos suggests. You can trust Z knows what he is talking about I picked up the Shure pads before they even arrived and fuuuuuuuuuck I enjoy my MK3's. They are light, comfortable, and they sound fantastic. In the end if you have the extra cash get the Monoprice Zeos is drooling over them so they are probably legit.

So the ones I bought came with pads that are very tiny ear openings, much much smaller, at the thickest there's more pad in width than there is opening, they don't even have the cloth on the underside where the pegs and magnets are. Hopefully I can find ones that you have in your review.

I can't imagine these are better than the 400i's with angled Brainwavz (standard) pads. Their sheepskin leather pads decrease the soundstage and air but add solidity to the sound and tighter bass response.
Ok this should help you at home depot they sell little clear bumpers for cabinet doors put a few 3 or 4 on the back side of the wooden caps the magnet should be strong enough to hold em in place and the bumpers will keep them just a little open. I hope this works for you i would hate to see holes in them.

just bought the last pair on amazon, i usually dont hold much merit to zeos' opinion, (just watch cause he's likable and we like the same stuffs) so this should be the true test. ill come back and let you know how they sound.

This look great, built quality are great. But they are on ear type that don't go well with my ears. But if I get 200$ plus does sony mods or if god Z predicts that Mono price brings us their way to gives more by selling some earcups way comfy and bigger I will get this.

Hey Z, would you recommend this for someone coming from gaming headsets (not headphones)? This is my first time with something of this quality. I am somewhat in the market for a headphone upgrade. I have the t50rp mk3s, I love how they do highs and vocals, the imaging is 👌, but it does not give me good bass representation.
