    You only have 1,310 subs but that production quality better than most 100k+ channels

  • @manueljenkin95
    @manueljenkin95 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    The reason I think you find bass better in open back mode is because you have more extension in open back mode. When you close it, you'll be creating reverbs and resonances and probably end up goofing up the Midbass which kinda bleeds into the lower ones so you'll not be able to hear the lower bass properly.

    • @DMS3TV
      @DMS3TV  7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      ^^^ Exactly! I'm glad you explained it better.

    • @manueljenkin95
      @manueljenkin95 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      DMS3 TV is it more enjoyable in closed back mode compared to something like hd598cs? Making a single driver perform well in different enclosures is a pretty difficult thing to pull off, even more so on a planar.

    • @DMS3TV
      @DMS3TV  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually yes. These sound VERY good still when closed. Its surprising how little they change.

    I like it when he tunes the photo to the headphone's sound. It took me a while to realize he does this in his reviews, but once you do, the quality of the review becomes 10x better.

    I own these, both closed an open, they sound great at $200. However, they sound MILES better open. However, the closed option was done so well that there is nearly no sound leakage. The only other complaint I have with these is the metal creaks a bit at times, seemingly for no reason, and it is very loud in the headphones. Also putting on the covers is so loud if you do it when wearing them, that it will make your ears ring.

    Why does everyone call these play-NARS? They're planar (planer) headphones. Just like Magnepan speakers are called plan(e)r speakers.

    • @rich1051414
      @rich1051414 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are saying 'plane'ars. As in, the speakers are on a single plane. It is derived from plane, so the A is long. The pronunciation depends on region.

    I wonder if the magnet in the caps might be affecting the overall magnetic field in such a way that could cause the reduced bass where you'd expect it to be more when closed.

  • @rale317
    @rale317 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    They can be closed and open at the same time. Just stick a nickel between the covers and the speakers, or drill a hole in the cover. I'm not sure the covers are wood... I scored the backs of the covers so I could glue a spacer to it to keep them slightly open. When I scored them with a razer blade it looked like plastic. I think it's just textured plastic. I'm not talking about the side you see on the outside I'm talking about scoring the inside that has that wooden texture. It turned white and curled up like plastic. Not like wood at all.

    How good of a soundstage do they have? wanted to know because I would be using these for gaming a lot. Also wanted to say the quality of this video was spectacular! keep up the good work.

    • @rich1051414
      @rich1051414 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great. The sound stage is extended when open, but I actually like to game with them closed. It pulls the sound stage in and doesn't sound as immersive, but it makes directional location easier. The thing about these is, choice.
      Closed they still sound good for $200, but they sound even better open. You can add a magnet under the magnet on the covers to lift the cover off the back to let some sound leak out if you want compromise.

    Nice Review...very familiar w/ headphones, and more so with earbuds...Are there so neutral, that I will want to adjust my eq for rock, jazz metal...and then the occasional trance? I like to feel the toms and bass drums, hear the crispness of hihats and cymbals...I like a well defined sound of an upright bass....and dynamic vocals....I've had the M50s....not good for rock and jazz....too bass heavy...I want to feel all bass, not just 1oo Hz and below...what's your vibe with these....I've never owned, or had a listen to semi-open, nor open headphones....I am open to suggestions...

      DMS3 TV can you tell me the difference between planar and normal headphones please? xd

    • @DMS3TV
      @DMS3TV  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ali Kawtharani sure thing! Put short and simple. Planars use a large membrane and magnetic grid (instead of a coil and surround). As a result they move faster than dynamic drivers usually resulting in a tighter sound, but also usually requiring more power to drive.

    • @manueljenkin95
      @manueljenkin95 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      DMS3 TV they are also harder to tune (or equalize), sound depends a lot on the chamber and their distortion curve is different from a dynamic driver. See rtings for measurements of any dynamic driver and some hifiman headphone and you'll understand.

  • @theinnocent_one
    @theinnocent_one 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It is extremely unfortunate that I came across this video and saw you mention burn-in as an actual thing that changed your headphones. You put confirmation and expectation bias into your head so hard that it changed the sound sig for you. Next, you'll say transparent amps are 'warm' or 'cold' or 'fast' or 'slow'.
    I really suggest you read a few papers on AES and other actual research to get a better understanding of why 'burn-in' is a myth. Companies like Audeze do it because of consumers like you who believe this myth so much that they can satisfy a customer by doing this.
    Edit - adding, I am not here to put you down, if you see around, I have actually given you advice before for the better.

    • @theinnocent_one
      @theinnocent_one 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      NVM, I found it and a comment in which you mentioned why you did a 100 runs and averaged it. I still feel it was pad compression or positioning.
      And the sad part of the video was that you got Sean Olive's comment on that video - THE SEAN OLIVE OF HARMAN RESEARCH (Harman Audio curve ring a bell)? Who mentioned that in his controlled experimentation environment he was able to find no conclusive results on this, yet nobody noticed that comment.
      If you can procure two different pairs of identically measuring headphones, then use worn pads vs new pads, then run the averaging of 10-20 runs with either pad, then publish results, it would be a well-controlled experiment.
      Sorry if it seems like I am on your case, I am a researcher myself and seeing things done without proper version control and replication standards irk me.

      Sorry I think I came across a bit rough. I think we can just agree to disagree with the whole burn in thing. Personally until I see real measurements and I can really understand what burn in physically is, I won't be convinced it exists. Otherwise though well done with the video. Production quality was top notch and you were able to clearly express your thoughts which I can't say about a lot of reviewers.

    • @DMS3TV

      skypjuh burn in is something most manufacturers do during QC checks. it's been proven several times with FR graphs. But I won't lose any sleep over your opinion : ). The headband is plenty soft for me. The m1060 however is another story and could use better padding.

    • @N3ukenInD3K3uken

      Ever tried picturing the way a headphones sounds while not having any specific music in mind ?
      you'll fail like everyone else. You can remember a rythm or a pitch in a piece of music but auditive memory doesn't work for something that covers such a wide spectrum of sounds as a headphone.
      That's why it's so hard comparing headphones..reviewers lose their perception in the time it takes to switch from one headphone to another.
      In the end even if burn-in was real you couldn't remember what the headphone sounded like before because you wouldn't specifically remember anyway.
      And every moment you spend adressing me is technically time you could spend sleeping so...yes you actually are losing sleep over my opinion.

      LapinBeau m50s sound is pretty unbalanced, it’s uncomfortable, and is completely plastic. This isn’t super comfortable out the box but it’s noticeably better. The build is way better too. They’re heavier but you don’t really feel it. The sound is more balanced for sure.

    • @lapinbeau

      @@LittleH Hmm. I see. And what about their durability? How long have y ou had them, and how often/how many hours a day do you wear them? My M50s have lasted about 2 years so far, with them on my head at least 12 hours a day.

    • @LittleH
      @LittleH 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      LapinBeau god damn. I couldn’t last more than two hours with their stock pads. I didn’t feel like changing them because they would already cost as much as something like these.
