Z - really hope you see this - they wired the mini XLR connect on their backwards. You can open up the 1570's and resolder the connection to make it work with all other XLR cables and not the special ones they made.
Wish there was a TH-cam vid of that mod. Badly.
I plan on modding them when I get them after Christmas. I'll upload a video of the process. I'm also going to change the headband to the hifiman 560 v2 headband.

@@carlabudephane7486 It is ok. I have the 1070s, they sound great but they have almost no clamping force, and mine kinda started creaking a bit on one side. I love mine but build could be better.

Eh, my M1060C (open modded) doesn't sound as good as my Sundara, and they're the same price these days.
You were right, Zeos. I yanked the protein pads off and put the plushy ones in their place. I gently bent the soft metal headband to increase the clamp force. It made a world of difference! These M1070's are simply awesome now, where they were dull and lifeless before. Cheers!
I wouldn't say dull. I enjoyed the pleather pads as well and the sound just seemed relaxing. Effortless and gentle. Comparing them to my 2C's were incredibly close.
But I agree with you, with the plushy pads they are insane in detail. It's all there.
I scored an open box pair of 1570's for $128 at the Monoprice store. For anyone is southern California, it's worth checking out their stock in the "clearance" room in the back. They had a ton of 1060's and 570's there as well for super cheap. They also have an amp set up so you can listen to them before you buy... The weight of the 1570's is definitely an issue, but a little bit of tweaking/fiddling with the fit helped a lot. The thick pads are super comfortable and help with the overall comfort. The sound is impressive and overall I'm super happy with them.
Damn that's a steal for that price. If I lived near socal I would definitely pick up a pair for that price

It's weird huh,, they clone Focal and Audeze, but then when it comes to the cable, they go out of their way to wire the cable differently :-p
I'm the happy owner of M1570. For my taste overall they are better than LCD-X. I have them both + HEX. They are very wide, warm, detailed and transparent sounding with great soundstage in width and depth. Very musically like HEX but with some LCD-X features. They are most common sense headphones in their price range. Expect heavy item on your head but with great comfort. People with Audeze experience will feel like in home (in example me). I have paid almost half of retail price and would not let from my head ever.
I'm trying to decide between the 1060, 1070 and 1570's... I'm jus a bit worried about a possible lack of bass when compared to the smaller brothers

got the 1060s after they fixed many of the minor problems. like installing 2.5mm connector and god damn are they the best thing ive ever listened to.
Everyone who reviews a monoprice Headphone always complains about the large case but rarely is put off by the much larger cases offered with ZMF , Audeze or even the GL2000 ...
I'm glad they come with a case at all but absolutely find the pelican style much more unusable than the monoprice offering.

is it just me or do those headbands look oddly similar to the Focal line?
M1570 with the included "fuzzy bear" pads solves the weight and comfort issues for me, and the iFi Zen CAN XBass compensates for whatever low end leaks through the pads. I absolutely love the combo. Probably my endgame headphones as long as they last.
Unfortunately while the included cable looks nice... it's Monoprice quality. The left channel cuts out. I got a 3rd-party M1570 to 4.4mm Pentaconn balanced cable from some guy on eBay and it works perfectly.

swapping the ground leads is actually a legit technique used in telecom and rj45 ethernet cables (look up straight-through cable pinout) to reduce capacitance and crosstalk... but at a frequency of 20kHz tops, it's completely superfluous.

You can probably actually mount these to the Audeze headbands if you get the yoke rods from Audeze support, Zeos. At least I did with my M1060C. Shame you no longer have one around. The carbon fibre one probably shaves a noticeable amount of weight.
You have a modded m1060c with an audeze headband? Also did u make it open back? If you have any sort of forum post or Reddit post or pictures i'd love to check it out. I Would be interested in doing that.
@@atticusrussell1225 sorry never took a pic but I'm unsure if Audeze will still send out the yoke rods to make it work, but you can mod them with a little bit of shaving to attach them to the metal piece holding the cups. That said it's a lot of money and in this day and age you might be better off spending it elsewhere. Never did the open mod because I was too lazy haha

I still have my Audeze lcd2c that I purchased on sale on Amazon for $599USD, using 4-pin balanced cable they really are amazing!
They should sell a 1/2 price (Halfolith?) set that doesn't have a strap or yolk that you just have to hold up to your ears. Top tier.

The Audeze LCD-4 is 735g so the 1570s are lighter by quite a bit....
If you look at the specs of the m1070s and m1570s the drivers on paper seem identical so I'm interested in finding out if they are exactly the same or not .
I got the m1070's for $239 on Amazon today, new. I haven't heard them yet but I feel like it's a steal of a deal.
I also ordered those for $239, and I received a rolling pin instead. Yes, like a bread dough rolling pin. I wish I was joking.

They sound pretty decent for now when running off my old phone, lg v20( has dac and headphone amp, but it's still just a phone)

@@rexbk09 they are steal at that price! Replace the pads with the ones mentioned in a lot of the Amazon reviews for this headphone, can't remember the brand name ATM. The included pads really hold this headphone back, it's a shame it's what they came with.

I was looking at both of these earlier this week as a possible upgrade from my M1060 v.2's. Thanks for the great review. Now I'm glad I waited. I wish Monoprice made a competitor to Audeze's LCDi4's. Closest thing looks like the M350's, but the price says they're probably more a competitor to the upper iSINE series. Guess I'll just stick with M1060's & Dragonfly Red till I can afford second-hand LCDi4's and a good desktop DAC/Amp.

So after watching your review of the DT990 600ohm I ended up buying a set for $120 along with a darkvoice for $200 as present to myself. It still hasn't arrived yet but would there be any other high impedance headphones you would recommend over the DT990s?

One thing you neglected to mention about these hp is how small the ear pads are. On another video, the guy had a HD 660S next to the M1070...that pic showed how small the Monolith really are...so no reason I need them.
I love my 1570s. I modified an audeze band onto them and it's a great improvement. Love love love them.
Did you take the audeze headband off of a pair you already owned, or were you able to just buy a headband? I have 1570's and well and would be interested in doing this as well. Thanks!

You can get them off ebay. The band and the yokes. Gotta dremel out the yoke holes slightly to fit the stock pivot pins. If you take your time and get a perfect fit you retain the pivot limiting.
@Wingnutt 1 but that's $200 and $30 for the rods and source yokes. Plus $600 for the headphone. Just get an Audeze at that point

The headband and yoke on the M1570 looks like the headband and yoke on the Focal Elex.
Just got my M1570s in the mail right now. Not heavy like I expected at all. Only heavy if you're picky. The lack of clamping force is bad. Bending the top doesn't help. Bend the sides does. The sound: Warm but not veiled at all. Not the M1060 sound. Not fast or lively. Warm but linear. They're okay I guess.
So do you think the m1060's have more/better bass?

Monoprice site tells that the pads are memoryfoam and lambskin. Did they really fool non-memory and pleather?
I could be wrong about the Lambskin.. I DOUBT I am wrong about the memory foam.
They thick ones are definitely memory foam, but I can't tell if mine are real lambskin or not. Either way those pads are super comfortable... the velour pads dont feel like memory foam, but are very soft. I haven't tried putting them on mine yet (1570's).
Always thought my m1060s are on the heavy side and the top band (it's thin) digs into my head as a result. Judging by 1070s/1570s, at least, it looks like they may have fixed that.
They are comfortable, they just need to increase the clamping force and they would be fine IMO

Thanks for the review! I’m considering the m1070 or the Hifiman sundara. Im currently owning the HE-400i and would like to upgrade to something better (want a bit better bass but also a upgrade generally ) the new phones will be running of my Aune x1s or with my meridian explorer 2 when I’m the go.
I would love to see a comparison between the two and also thankful if you would like to comment on the difference and what you would pic. Primarily looking for sq not perfect build.
Before upgrading headphones, you should consider upgrading your DAC/amplifier, as the Aune x1s simply does not deliver enough power to make the 400i sound its best. More power will yield a fuller, more-detailed sound.
I haven't heard the m1070, but I can tell you that, compared to the 400i, the Hifiman Sundara is warmer, darker, and has a narrower sound-stage. Build quality is good, except for the sharp (unpolished, right-angle) edges on the part of the headband that connects to each earcup.
You could also consider swapping pads on your 400i. Let me know if you're interested.

It occurred to me that it wouldn't make sense to get another amplifier at this point since you already own two decent DAC/amps: one for home and the other for on-the-go listening. You simply want some headphones with better bass, but the 400i is meant to be an at-home headphone, and all its bass is lost when used outside. With this in mind, I recommend getting a closed-back, dynamic-driver headphone.
Would you be willing to purchase a headphone and exchange pads to unlock better sound? One of the models that I have in mind its the black SIVGA SV003: a truly superb, unknown headphone with great looks, build quality, and a travel case.
As for optimal pad-pairing, it will depend on the sound signature you're looking for: Do you want a more-neutral sound or prominent treble and/or (sub-)bass? I ask since have this particular headphone as well as a few pad models that, when installed, result in significantly superior sound than with their cruddy stock pads.
@@1sebwick1 Along with the new Schiit Heresy (and Magni 3+), the JDS Labs Atom and Liquid Spark are the best ~$100 amps... but they would still require a DAC. You do own the X1S, but I would hold off on that route. Personally, I own a HE-4XX and Sundara and am waiting on a best-value/mid-tier/end-game DAC/amp combination unit. I recommend you do the same... but get a good (best-value) closed-back headphone for now.
Since Monoprice released the pin out for the m1570 so you can easily make your own cables and remember fostex 909s had Sennheiser connection only reversed is it such a big deal ? It does come with a balanced cable so that's a good thing right?

How are the 1070s compared to the hd6xx. Also, do you think that round brainwavz xl pads would fit (don't like the feeling of leather and the others seem to lack depth for my ears.
The 1070's are MUCH more aggressive. The sound is going to be much closer, faster, and detailed. The 6xx is a very laid back headphone and kind of hard to compare. I would call the 6xx's smooth and wide and the 1070's crisp and in your face. I definitely prefer the sound of the 1070, but I still love my 6xx.
Sent them back to Monoprice as quick as I could, Bad sound and build as I remember.

damn man I've got the 1070s and the Beyerdynamics dt1990 here and cant decide between em...Now i was almost at the conclusion to keep the Beyerdynamics then I've found your advice to change the pads and now i'm back at it again....Got the 1070 für 256€ and the Beyerdynamics for 380€ though...still close but i am afraid of the buidl quality etc...Damn Help!!??!!
What did you end up keeping? I was wondering how the 1070s competed with 1990s because with the velour pads they are pretty insane.
@@Cambaudio Really depends on what price you get them for. I kept the Beyer in the end because of his better build quality, and he is more universal in usage (for me). I also mix with it sometimes, which wouldnt really be possible with the 1070. They were great fun though. I also got some other Pads for the 1070s from deconi that made the 1990s sound "darker" which is fun. The breaking point for me was: The 1070 is cheaper, yes, but the 1070 is still about 300 for something that seems not bad quality wise, but compared to the 1990 more shaky and prone. Then Monoprice is a company where you dont know if you will be able to get spare parts for them in 5 years from now while Beyer has been here for decades and a good Customer Service. Plus, as Beyer is the bigger name, if you ever sell them they will have a better reselling value...So the 100 Euros more were well spend...I still think the 1070s are pretty good and thought very hard about keeping both which speaks for the 1070s..You wouldnt regret keeping these soundwise....
Now on a mission to create my perfect headphone. Has to be great for gaming and music also portable use it at work and on the bus easy to drive and planar. Just going modded a cheap planar headphone and then pay someone to build it from the ground up.
What headphone Z would you consider your ultimate closed headphone? I am aiming for the Focal Stellia. Would you recommend any headphone over those for sound and quality?

Would the community help, I want either the focal elex or m1570. I listened to the utopias and fell in love but don't have thousands for headphones. Any opinions for soundstage dynamics and imaging?
I did not like the Focals, the bass clips on certain songs at med/high volumes. I sent mine back and got a pair of LCD2's which I love. I have a pair of M1070's and they are great, just a small step down from the LCD2's in the bass dept IMO. The headband doesnt clamp very hard as described in the vid. I do not know about the 1570 because of the reasons mentioned in the vid, but the m1070 is great. Edit-I plan on getting a pair of m1570's if they fix the connectors( I hope they do something with the headband but I can live with this one just not the connectors)
