    Could not afford the A1000z new, bought the A900x used for $78 the day after I watched this review and finally understood the meaning of "transparency" in vocal.

    Man I totally get where you're coming from with the ART series sound description.
    I set out last week to buy a pair of Oppo PM-3s for late night listening, and maybe travel. I was looking for a very practical set of closed over-ears and the PM-3s seemed super practical on paper, plus I'd demoed a set before and knew they sounded 'good', and they fit my head and ears. Tick, tick, tick. Take my AUD$499, right?
    So, I walk in and notice they have a set of Audio-Technica ATH-A700Xes marked down to AUD$169, and I think to myself "I hear a lot about the Audio-Technica headphone sound, maaaaybe I'll have a tiny listen, just to feel like I've listened to an alternative before buying the Oppos that I am definitely 100% going to buy with my practical headphone money for very practical headphones".
    So I'm standing there, A-Bing, hotplugging like a switchboard operator, and man. Man. I mean, I know they're not accurate - the midrange 'toc' sounds in Massive Attack's 'Mezzanine' were too thin - but everything was in a precise location in space. Like I could reach out and touch things. Comparitively, the Oppos had a much more detailed midrange, but taken as a whole the sound was lifeless. My brain was telling me "Detachable cord!" and "Travel headphones!" and "Those blue Audio-Technica cans look ridiculous!" - and every time I was like "yeah, but shut up a sec, I'm just going to put them back on and listen to this one other thing".
    This was the point at which I realised I was having way too much fun, and just bought the damn things. If this is what 169 of my puny Australian dollars buys, the upper end of the Z series frightens me a little.

      that's a cool story :) I love the AT sound signature as well, haven't demoed the PM-3. Seems like those are designed for people who care more about bass

    • @twoften
      @twoften 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Androvich What first got me about the A700Xes was that, like Z said, the bass is definitely there. Like, I'm listening to to Stevie Wonder's Superstition in store, making Not Bad Face at the bass line. The PM-3s are okay for bass, I think? They are liquid smooth, but nothing at all stands out or grabs the attention. I wish they were better, because build-wise, they are beautiful.

      PM3 is too polite if you're being generous, boring if you're not.

    Zeos, the closed back 900 is also made in Japan :)
    I agree, the sound is phenomenal but I do wish they had a standard headband option.

  • @r5037
    @r5037 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I really like this series. I have the 990s.. They do take some getting used to because at first they always feel like they are falling off. But mine mostly stay put. They don't quite have the sound stage of the open ones but I'd say these are the best sounding closed can's I've had. My only complaint is maybe the wire coming out of the side is kind of inconvenient.

  • @Kpthom

    Waited for this review for too long. I bought these the day they were released and had to decipher Japanese. Glad to see Zeos liked it.
    They are revealing but they have the AT house sound and are kinda bright/forward. The bass is there, but it's not overpowering. They're also super light which is surprising.

    Thanks for the great review! I was debating between these and AD1000X and ended up going for open, but these definitely sound amazing. I've been following AT for quite many years, and I think they've been making great drivers for a long time, but struggled in air control with closed headphones before. With the MSR7 they introduced what they call the "dual-layer air control", and later applied it to their other closed sets, including the new ART series. I think that probably has something to do with the improved bass and the "spaciousness" you mentioned around 10:50.

    Highly underrated mid-price ( $130-150 ) close ATH A900X ( also 53mm driver ) is made in Japan. Ear cup can also be swiveled side-to-side and moved at an angle.

      Ear cups are connected to a movable yolk, so you can move the ear cups side-to-side via the yolk and at an angle on a "V' angle or can be centered.

    The earlier ATH woodies and Connoly (Green & Brown) leather versions are iconic. The cheaper stuff is a little BLAH IMO. They have dropped the ball for a while unfortunately.
    Good channel though, I appreciate the effort. Get yourself a good pair of HP's brother, you only live once. Make the leap from mid-fi. Cheers.
    Old skool solution to the ATH wing design being sloppy ...elastic bands.
    Not hating just giving you some solid advice...sell em off and grab those new Sonys Z1R or shoot for the TH-900. Those Foster (Fostex) are far better than the Massdrop garbage. New amp ... nice DAC and your set. ATH can be bright especially on the newer cheaper stuff. Grado PS-1 rocks if you ever get a chance to listen... sweet sweet headphone.
    Upgrade Brother. Develop your ear to a more top tier.

    Hello. I've had a pair of ATH 700 Pro Audio Technical headphones since I've been mixing in clubs. Now I use a Pioneer SB3 console with Serato and sometimes I mix at home and record the mixes. Ath 700 pro are designed for DJs and do not have much fidelity, they sound very loud and with a lot of bass. I would try other headphones, more neutral but pleasant. Do you think Ath A1000Z would be right for me? I like the sound demo! Or should I try some planar headphones? Or ATH R70x? If you can guide me, I would be grateful! Thanks

    Speaking of Philips and pads, how are you finding the ZMF Ori pads on your X1's? Do they change the signature? Are they just a comfort upgrade?

    • @ZReviews
      @ZReviews  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Every pad changes it in some way. Lets say they hurt it the least and kept the characteristics I liked.

      Right on. Any similar pads? Are the Brainwavz pads big and/or good enough?

      How did you go about replacing pads on the X1's?

      Buy new pads. Change pads.

      ***** But how do you actually put the pads on the headphones? Philips has a completely different mounting system than any other headphones

    CB-1s not mentioned again... I feel like he's forgotten about them because they are not on his wall or there was a souring experience at the end of his testing. If it is the latter I must know what!

  • @littlewill4900
    @littlewill4900 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Finally...that's why i love ATH so much. To be honest, ath is a kind of company who intentionally(imho) sucks in making low-ended iem/headphones. For those they're not promoting so much, like the ad2000x, a1/2000z, im02/03/04 (01 not counted, it is shit),ckr9ltd etc... these're the reasons for respect (and also the only models people would like to talk about).

    DT770's are good closed headphones, also the NVX's

    • @alexanderjarvis9827
      @alexanderjarvis9827 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's absolutely true, but I think Zeos was more talking about closed headphones that compete in that price range. I'm guessing the DT770 and NVX don't compete with the A1000z, otherwise there would be no need for them lol

    • @androvich20
      @androvich20 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Is there an open headphone that has soundstage and base? I mean BASE like for electro but I also listen to rock and acoustic kind of music. Or do I have to get 2 set of headphones to get that? Like the TH-X00 seem very attractive to me but at the same time I want something else to listen to other genres.
