- We have the Second Sight 4k Ultra High Definition Blu-ray of George Romero's classic Dawn of the Dead (1978), BUT we are going to go further and look at the Ultimate blu-ray and DVD editions from Arrow and Anchor Bay.

I've got a few sets now and would have to agree the second sight D.A.T.D is the ultimate for fans. I can't get my head around people moaning about the "lack of grain " and how the new version looking too cleaned up. Ridiculous. The 4k version looks awesome. And that includes the Argento cut which is the oddity in my books but still is great. Great review here
Thank you so much Martin!!! I can’t imagine Dawn of the Dead looking any better than the Second Sight release. There’s more grain on the Argento cut but that transfer doesn’t come from the camera negative like the theatrical and extended cuts. What gets me is when noise reduction and sharpening is applied to images to make them sharper and cleaner, but I didn’t see any of that on the Second Sight so not sure why some are concerned about the lack of grain. It’s there, but just fine grain because it’s from the ocn, not a generation or more down the line.

I have the anchor bay Blu-ray. I’m considering getting the 4k set. But I don’t like the fact that the special features are on a disc that I won’t be able to play here in the U.S. Because of this, I believe Anchor Bay is still the best release.
But damn, I didn’t know about these hardbound books, mall maps, or comics came with them. Might need to get them all

Is there a method to watch the new 4k remaster in the original aspect ratio (non wide-screen) that I'm missing in the options menu? I've been enjoying my director's cut dvd for years, and it's my preferred ratio for DOTD, so a little disappointed with this new release.

I had a version years ago and the main menus was set in the safe room in the mall. And it was empty and the tv was static in the background any idea what version that was??
Good video I can tell you put a lot of effort into comparing all the releases for people. Glad to hear it’s maybe the new definitive release of this movie. I’m still waiting for my Blu Ray copy to come in the mail. I wasn’t holding my breath for a U.S. Blu Ray release any time soon

I have all the "Dawn" releases in this video. I just love to collect more than one version of worthy and iconic horror films - but that's just me.

When I bought this, I accidentally bought the Blu-Ray version. Was gonna get the 4K.
I saw they released a set which just has the 4K and extra Blu-Ray disc.
Are those the same 4K discs that are on the Second Sight set?
I bet the Arrow DVD audio bitrate is so much higher than the Anchor Bay Ultimate Edition.
I let someone years ago borrow my divimax DVD and I forgot about it and they never returned it. I forgot who borrowed it and have never been able to find any type of dvd or bluray since. I wouldn't mind having that cool arrow bluray. Maybe one day we can get a proper one here in the 🇺🇸. One can only dream.

i got lucky and got Dawn of the Dead 4K at goodwill $ 9 dollars they where stocking the selfs at the time and the lady said i got one more cart in the back

I think the releases of Dawn of the Dead had been multiple times analyzed. But what about "Day Of The Dead" ? And there is one certain aspect which does not really matter to almost anyone. Preservation of movies shot in Full screen. Before Laserdics and DVDs I had Videocassettes (VHS). So naturally also of Day of the Dead. I was excited when it was released on Laserdisc, then DVD, then Blu Ray. But what happened? On the VHS you see the whole movie, but then not anymore. Just check it! They just cut away the top and the bottom. Then they called it "16:9 / Letterbox / Widescreen". Hey, I can fool myself, can I ? Imagine a photograph of yourself being cut on the top and bottom. So your forehead, the hair (or the bald) and your throat are not to be seen anymore. And if you think you therefore can see more / new information on the left and/or right hand side, think again! So in short, they cut the whole movie !
I also bought mine from Zavvi but the top right was a bit dented so I contacted Zavvi and I got an additional 10% off since I knew that the set was so limited I just took the discount. But if anyone is a fan of this movie I tell you to pickup this release or wait for a standard edition.

Why is there no North American release for an American movie? SMH.. No way I am throwing down that kind of money to import a bunch of discs that won't even play on my Bluray player. I can still be happy with my Ultimate Edition set. It's really old now, but still great.
I hope there’s a US equivalent at some point! The circulating rumor is the rights are held up because the films producer is asking more for licensing especially after he commissioned a very expensive 3-D conversion that’s made the rounds in screenings. The Ultimate Edition DVD is one of my favorite dvd releases.
whilst it's American made the rights are held by Rubinstein for English speaking countries and Dario Argento for everywhere else. UK is added to the European market so Argento holds the rights, and he is not asking for anywhere near as much as Rubinstein, afaik.
Get a region free player then you don't have that issue
4K Blu-rays are region free and I was able to buy the standard edition for $55 from Rarewaves UK with free shipping to the US. The extras Blu-ray *is* region locked to Region B

Great video and info thanks.. however I'm still sticking with my arrow release, I just think it looks a while lot better overall. Might sound strange but I think the second sight release is just to much! It's to big and to much money. Just my opinion but who needs a cd soundtrack anyway .

The standard edition is much cheaper. You can get it for about $30 on Blu Ray.
Nice video man. I love this film and this boxset. One of the greatest horror films of all time. Also have all the other editions you have and was wondering, do you find this new 4k set the colors in the picture seem a bit muted and darker compared to other editions? I was watching on a 1080p plasma with no dolby vision or HDR. I know the original director of photography was involved with the color timing and was wondering did they base this color timing remaster on a perfectly projected version of the film on a big screen...

dawn of the Dead the Original on DVD but the only problem is WHY CAN'T I NOT FIND IT!!
talk to Richard Rubenstein. He has the rights to the film for the US anyway. He apparently spent a bunch of money converting the movie to 3D but wanted a shitload of money to release it which no one would pay so he is holding the rights captive to try and recoupe his loss by charging a shitload of money to release it on dvd again. So it is out of print in the US at this moment. I got my copies back in 2004 or so. I am good at least.
The Italian Koch Media release of the Argento cut looks like someone vomited on the film scanner

amazon.co.uk or zavvi possibly. I got mine through diabolikdvd but they only had preorders up for a week and closed them. They might have additional copies that will put out at a later time. try signing up for their waitlist? Or unfortunately eBay might be last resort.
@@ScottReviews I was left with only eBay as an option. I couldn’t get SS to ship to my location and Zavi was sold out every time I checked. I way overpaid on eBay but I’m staying positive that I at least have the set and finally own this movie!
Second Sight are selling the 'normal' 4k boxset directly for 29.99GBP. Bargain ! :)
When is Dawn Of The Dead coming out on 4k?
The limited edition is out in UK now. Last I checked zavvi still had copies. But the standard edition with all the versions comes out in the UK in March.

No this isn't worth spending money on, a 5TB USB Hard drive is worth spending money on. You put these things that are normally called UHD on the hard drive and they take 30GB odd, and you have the full thing.

You can also rip blus with Makemkv to get around the region barrier, a lot more cost effective if you already have a drive connected to a computer
