  • Would it be a total buzz kill to find out one day when you decide to open your streaming service and see some of your digital copies gone in an instant? What if you didn't have the chance to pick up a physical copy as a backup when it was put on store shelves at your local retailer months or years prior? Chances are, it's happening much more frequently, and that's a sad, hard pill to swallow. Today, let's talk about a film that has disappeared in the ether when it comes to physical and digital release. Let's discuss George A. Romero's 1978 zombie epic, Dawn of the Dead.

This is gonna be a buzzkill comment…
But I work at a Goodwill warehouse.
Everyday I throw away entire garbage bins of records, cassettes, vhs, dvd, and Blu-ray media into our compactor which then gets transported right into the landfill.
Capitalism is destroying physical media cause it’s not “profitable.”
So if anyone sees this comment:
Please do not donate physical media.
Even if say a family member dies…find a home for their media. Have a good old fashioned garage sale if you must.

Yup. Same. Also have original Star Wars trilogy and THX 1138 on laserdisc because they're the highest quality edition you can purchase that haven't been ruined by wretched 90s CGI. Also, people losing access to their digital purchases isn't new. Happened to everyone who bought music on Microsoft's music store. When the PlaysForSure authentication servers went down, everybody lost access to their music. There also reports on Reddit of people losing access to their purchased digital content as Amazon loses distribution rights.

For those who care about physical media, it honestly feels like we're living in the golden age of the format. When DVDs preceded the streaming age, we had the big studios churning out bare budget, zero-effort releases of the disposable trash they knew would sell. With many of those studios now exiting the market, we have boutique studios creating releases I never thought I'd see in my lifetime. Anchor Bay paved the road, but Second Sight, Arrow, Severin, Indicator, Vinegar Syndrome and many others are not only keeping the medium alive - they're giving films the love and restoration we could never have dreamed of from the major studios.

In addition to those, I have the Anchor Bay 4 disc DVD set and Blu-ray (which I was able to grab at FYE for six bucks shortly after it went out of print) along with the Second Sight 4K limited edition set and standard Blu-ray set. George A. Romero‘s Martin is another casualty that shares the same fate with Dawn of the Dead. The rights issues are pretty much identical, and you can only get an overseas Blu-ray or 4K of it. I was 9 when cable finally made it to our small midwestern town & for the first 90 days all new customers were provided with every movie channel as a free sample (at that time, 3 majors only: HBO/SHO/the Movie Channel). Knowing our parents were not the easy up-sell types, my brother & I needed to dive in & watch as many movies as possible before that trial period was over. Dawn Of The Dead (1978 version) was one of our favorite. We watched it multiple times & have always shared fond memories involving that new era in entertainment delivery as a standout moment in our childhood.
Thank u for inspiring my trip down memory lane.
I love ur channel, thank u for the content & consistency. Never a bad video, a bar I wouldnt set for any product or service, so u have certainly exceeded my expectations.
    Happy Holidays 🥳✌🏻🧟‍♂️

I managed to acquire the Achor Bay release of Dawn on Bluray. I had heard that the person who currently holds the rights to the film was asking for ridiculous sums of money to have it re-scanned or re-issued or especially placed on a new format like 4K UHD. It was something like, $30 million? Usually, the most that rights holders charge is like $100,000. So that gives you some perspective on how the rights holder is more or less holding the title hostage until someone wants to make him a millionaire over night. The reason no boutique or studio is going to pay that price tag is because even with great sales, you wouldn't profit $30 million. You would lose money almost certainly. There is but only one way other than this person giving up or selling off the rights. That is if someone wanted to crowdfund to pay for the rights with the expressed desire to see the film on a modern-day format with zero hope for profit.

The same thing is happening with the pilot of Doctor Who. Someone feels they’re entitled to more money than they were offered and are keeping it hostage. Gatekeeping is pretty much the term for it sadly. True fans wouldn’t hold rights to a classic hostage but of course, the people holding Who and Dawn hostage aren’t true fans, they’re just greedy jerks. The fans pay for their greed and, due to this, we can’t have a true ultimate edition of an amazing movie.

I still convert the discs to video files for the convenience of streaming movies and shows to my devices. I feel like that
solution is a good hybrid of physical media and streaming.

Umm, no. I was ok with the zombies running, because Return of the Living Dead is one of my all time favorite zombie movies. But when they started crawling on the ceilings and leaping like The Fly, that lost me. Before you say "but the zombies can talk in RotLD" there is also an element of camp/comedy in that film, where Dawn is supposed to be taking itself seriously.

It's a close-run thing with Night of the Living Dead, but Dawn of the Dead is arguably the best ever zombie film, and is probably the film that's been the most influential on the genre. It's completely insane and unforgivable that it's become unavailable. I'm lucky enough to have multiple copies on DVD. It didn't used to be hard to get at all- at one point in the 2000's they even gave it away free with a UK Saturday newspaper as a Halloween promo. If it can happen to Dawn of the Dead, it can happen to almost any movie- one of the many, many reasons consumers need to keep physical media alive.
Also, the Snyder remake has a good first 10 minutes, but then becomes an absolute garbage fire travesty. If that became lost media, I probably wouldn't care.

I'm still trying to find the "Complete Cut" on disc. Apparently there was an extremely limited release, a few years ago, but I only found out about it a year later, after all copies had been sold.

I keep shouting from the rooftops on this! It's the same reason that I ran to Back Market for an updated ipod as soon as I heard that Apple stopped making them. Anybody listening/watching more than base, populist entertainment knows that you need your own copy of the songs, movies and shows you want to own. You CANNOT count on these corporations to keep it available for you. If you can't count on your job to put your needs first, what makes you think a media corporation will?
I don't get why people can't see the obvious correlation without being told.
