Hey David. I still do love the Blu-ray format and I still buy a lot of movies on Blu-ray. I don't praise it's nearly enough as I should. The top 10 in this video I do stick by and all of them I honestly think have monster upgrades over there Blu-ray counterparts. Hey Keith, great video mate. If all movie fanatics created their top 10 list they would all differ so there is no right or wrong. It's personal opinion. At present I'm 6.5 hours into watching James Clavell's Shogun on blu ray which is an absolute joy to watch. I've got just over 2.5 hours to still watch. Have you ever seen Shogun? Highly recommended if you haven't even though it has nothing whatsoever to do with this video 🤣🤣🤣
Hey Jeff that is a valid point and you're absolutely right. Everyone's top 10 is going to be different and you will never find one of the same. Great video countdown and I do have quite a few of these and couldn’t agree more about Dawn of the Dead I bought a 4k tv and player just to watch this to be my first ever 4k viewing. I do think the Blue underground release should get a mention especially Zombie which looks amazing. Thanks for the tip on Hellfest never seen this but it’s on my watch list.

This is one of the most agreeable 'Top 10' film videos I can remember seeing. Hit after hit, after hit. In particular, The Shining, which I watched today on 4K having owned the Blu-Ray for a few years - Kubrick would be very proud of the gorgeous transfer. Keith, you're the man, and I look forward to the live with Mondo tomorrow. Also, you inspired me, I finally filmed my The Batman review, what a film.

The Shining is a masterpiece and to be honest any one of the movies in this top 10 could be number one. I still can't get over how well The Shining looks on 4K and I honestly think it's movies like that that benefit the most on 4k. I might give 'The Thing' another go, I tried to watch it when I was far too young and I got about 4 minutes in before submitting to the terror of it! The Shining is artful in every sense, the crispness they've got out of it is remarkable, and the colours look much better now (they were already good!). Hey Helmi. The Demons edition is probably one of the rarest arrow editions I own and I'm so fortunate to have it and it's great to hear you have it as well. For me horror was at its best in the 80s. Great stuff. I love that you had HELLFEST in there. One of the best recent Halloween flicks. I am also excited because I haven't gotten into 4K yet, but I am already planning on titles to buy when I do.
I have to admit I am so relieved that someone left a comment about hellfest because I thought people would complain that it was in the top 10. I honestly think it's a remarkable horror and trust me do pick it up on 4K you will not believe how beautiful this movie looks on the format. I really do hope you pick it up

Like I said in the video I can't watch Halloween without watching Halloween 2. To me it's just one big movie and I would love Someday for some company to join the two of them together and put out one 3 hour version. It would never happen but I suppose we can dream

I picked up the DOTD Second sight box second-hand this week for a bargain of 22.50 had a little ding at the top of the box but everything else is mint, the books, and soundtrack discs. steal of the week. Love this movie so much.

I honestly would love to hear your thoughts on demons when you do get it. I don't know what it is with that movie but it leaves me horribly uncomfortable when I watch it and it must be something from my childhood when I seen it first. Hellfest is fantastic as well. The setting of the movie gets me very nostalgic and the 4K transfer honestly one of the greatest you will ever see. I really do hope you pick it up. @@millerman9991 Hey, I've been a 4Ker for a couple of months now, just got lots of catching up to do! I'd say Aquaman, Kong: Skull Island and The Thing are the standouts from what I've bought so far. I read the reviews of The Thing, same as you, and I couldn't believe I was watching the same disc. It looks gorgeous and the snow/ice looks so beautifully white.
I still can't get over some of the reviews I read for the thing on 4k. I honestly don't know what to say maybe their expectations were too high I honestly don't know but there is no way you can knock on that movie and say the picture looked underwhelming. Looks remarkable

Here Sebastian. I'm shocked to hear that you have not seen the fog since VHS. It's definitely up there in my top 5 greatest horror movies of all time and honestly I was always going to put this at number one. Especially when you see it on 4k. Prince of Darkness is a good movie but definitely not one of my favourite John Carpenter movies. Looks astonishing in 4K as well. Freakin stellar rundown of *immaculate horror* there...all in tip top home viewing shape...having *The Fog* first resonates with myself greatly, cos *always* had an intense relationship with it due to impressionable age wen i first saw film back in 81 on the the ol telly box(!) S'funny to me how the xp of seeing classics from bygone eras in the crappiest of formats (22" analog CRT tv, VHS) does little to *dull* the recollection or the thrill of seeing them all first time around...is it just cos filums were *so much better* then...or is it now just a case of format trumps film quality...I'm generalising, but just saw *Top Gun Maverick* in *4DX* and I think it reminded me just how much a truly great film benefits from an amazing, sensory presentation experience.

I have to admit the fog was always going to be my number one for this top 10 and even though Halloween is my favourite horror movie of all time I felt it's transfer was a little underwhelming when it first came out. So I had to be faithful to this top 10 and not put it in. I have to tell you I completely relate to everything you said about the Fog when we first seen it back in the day. I didn't have nothing to do with picture quality or sound. It was just a remarkable ghost story expertly directed by one of the greatest horror directors at the time. I'm embarrassed to say that I still haven't seen Top Gun Maverick yet but I've heard some very special things about it. Just waiting to find the time to watch it

Great list. Hell Fest was actually the first movie I ever watched from beginning to end in 4K in January 2019 (technically on a 1440p screen so doesn't quite count perhaps).

Halloween 3 is definitely not an unpopular opinion Gary because it would have been in this top 10 only for I could only have one movie per franchise. I can't tell you how much I love that movie. I watch it nearly every month.

You're absolutely right a lot of people have not gotten over the fact that Michael Myers was not in Halloween 3. I've only just recently converted John over and Mondo Chelloveck Movies. He was against this movie for so long until I sent him a copy of it and when he watched it again he appreciate the movie for what it is and now he loves it

I think it's a horror masterpiece. The only thing that held the movie Back is the fact that it was called Halloween 3. They should have left it as Season of the Witch

Awesome, review. I just watched again, The Hills Have Eyes (unrated 2006) Wow I forgotten how graphic this film was. On a side note, I recommend on Netflix, The Man from Toronto, fun and entertaining. I actually watched it twice last week, the second time with the girlfriend and she loved it. Nice1 Keith, I have "The Fog" 4K (superb !), I have "The Thing" 4K on order (great movie!), I have Alien on Blu-ray but at some point I'd love to upgrade that to 4K if I can. I don't own "The Shining" but I did get to see it on 4K last year...great picture and a very good watch. I liked your comments about Jack being "frightening" and the hotel being "the star" 🙂 I really liked "Halloween" back in the day but not seen it in decades, never saw any of the sequels...I need watch Halloween 1 again...and then check out the sequel by the sounds of it ! 🙂
The first three Halloween movies I regard as some of the finest horror movies I've ever seen. Bear in mind Michael Myers is not in Halloween 3 it's a completely different story. The sequel to Halloween I don't see it as a sequel it's a continuation. It feels like one movie and if you are a fan of the original I definitely recommend checking it out. I watched a movie just recently on 4k and if I had this movie chances are it would have been close to number one the Amityville Horror. To me it's the perfect 4K transfer. I couldn't find a single flaw with it and if you are a fan I definitely recommend picking that up on 4k.
@@millerman9991 Nice1, I'll definitely keep an eye out for Halloween 1-3 then...interesting that you mentioned "Amityville Horror" as I've never seen that one but my neighbour mentioned it a few weeks back...I assume you're talking about the original from 1979 (looks like they remade it in 2005).
Oh I'm definitely talking about the original. Don't get me wrong the remake with Ryan Reynolds is not too bad either but it doesn't come remotely close to the original. Give it a go and see what you think. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised
I agree with you that Evil Dead is the best looking 16mm 4k I've seen 👌 the colours in Hellfest are insane 🤩👍 can't wait to watch my Psycho, it does look amazing! Yeah I've seen new things in the Demons 4k print...colours especially that just wasn't there in any blu ray I ever saw before 🤯🤩 it's great seeing The Shining in 4k, how sharpe is it!!! 😲😲😲👌👌👌 totally agree about H2 being so clean!!! 🤩 yeah I thought The Thing was unreal!! Can't understand why it was talked about as a bit of a bust on 4k 😵💫😵💫 yeah I think Night and Day definitely will be getting a 4k soon, it's gotta happen!! I agree that The Fog looks amazing!! I know a few people I would find it surprising that I didn't have Halloween in this top 10 but I had to be faithful to it and Halloween was a little underwhelming on 4K when it first came out. Hey Chris. Jaws looks remarkable on 4K but I think I would probably put that under creature feature more than horror. Other than that it would have been in the top 10 trust me. What evil dead box set are you talking about just out of curiosity. The only reason why I ask is because I own so many different box sets of the Evil Dead

Alien and The Thing are brilliant and look amazing as well. They are my two favourite horror films of all. The Fog would be in my top 3 as well - such a spooky movie!

Would be a great 10 to recommend someone new to horror, what a treat they'd be in for. Have to agree fully on demons 1+2 I watched both recently on 4k and looked jaw dropping compared to the old blu rays. I still have to see alien and Dawn of the dead yet on 4k. And going to check that tremors 4k which I just picked up and showed on insta. Maybe an honourable mention aswell Keith to the howling on 4k, recently watched it and those amazing effects looks so much better now, and so many dark shots in the forest with the hdr.
Hey Steve. I watch tremors around 3 weeks ago and trust me when I say you are in for a treat when you see that in 4k. Looks remarkable. There was a few movies that I wanted to put into this top 10 but I couldn't put them in and the Howling was definitely one of them and American Werewolf in London was another. Probably should have done a top 15 😆 🤣
Nice list, I know it's a combination of Film & 4K Transfer but I'd find it very hard to do a Top 10 Horror and not include 'American Werewolf in London' but I'm not sure how it looks in 4k tho.
American Werewolf is a phenomenal movie and the 4K transfer looks beautiful as well. I just couldn't squeeze it in to the top 10. If it was a top 15 list it definitely would have been there.

It's good to know that Psycho, Halloween 2 and The Fog are a step up picture quality from the Blu-Ray thou I think older films Really live up to expectation on 4K as a lot of latest releases on 4K have being proven to be very little difference to Blu-Ray, oh And just to let you know Keith my Imax 3D glasses are not suitable for my Friday the 13th part 3 as I need the Anaglyph style That's Red and Blue glasses, eBay has a huge selection.
Hey Carl you are absolutely spot-on when it comes to older movies on 4k. I honestly think that's when the format really gets the shine. Nowadays when you look at recent movies the only real upgrade you see is colour. Not taking anything away from the new movies that come out because some of them do look remarkable. But I do think the benefits of 4K lie with the older movies. That's a shame to hear about the 3d on Friday the 13th Part 3. I was almost certain it was active 3D and not the Anaglyph.
John Carpenter is my favorite director and im so happy with the transfer and look of his film on 4K. He truly derserves it. Great list agree with most of it. However i would have found room for Suspiria. An absolute stunning transfer.
Suspiria looks absolutely remarkable and and if I did a top 15 it probably would have fit in there. It's a great movie as well and I really need to check out it's remake. I've heard very mixed things about it and I heard it's nothing near as good as the original
Can't argue with any of those choices really, Hell Fest is a new one to me though so I might check that out. Alien UHD is one the few movies I own with HDR10+ too. I've always thought The Fog was one of Carpenter's most underrated movies, I actually prefer it to Halloween.
Honestly I can't praise hellfest enough and I always get very nostalgic when I watch the movie. It takes me back to the old Halloween horror movies that I love. The fog is another extraordinary John Carpenter movie and even more extraordinary in 4k. It is very underrated when you put it up against the likes of Halloween and the thing. Hi Keith Dont know if you have seen this figurine before but by the look of the ones you have already i think it would fit in nice. Its on Amazon's website and its Night of the Living Dead Ultimate Collector's Exclusive Edition .The figurine features an arm coming out of a grave, looks superb. What about Suspiria (1977)? Have you checked that out yet? It's 4K upgrade is very highly praised. The colours are incredible and sharpness is on point.
Suspiria looks fantastic on 4K and the movie itself is very good I just found the other 10 movies in this top 10 better than suspiria. Again not taking anything away from suspiria because it's a great movie.
Psycho and all Hitchcock ar great on 4k, especially Vertigo! Demons is amazing on 4K too, totally agree. Love that set! Dawn of the Dead is also my number 1, love the 4K set and I watch all 3 cuts of the film.

Could you share which bluray player you are using ? I got a Sony Ubp-x700 but realized that it cannot play XL 100gb discs. I wonder if are there a lot of uhd discs that fits in 50gb discs..
Hey Andre are you sure that your player won't play 100gb discs because that sounds very strange to me. Every 4K player should play Every 4K title. I'm using a Panasonic DP-UB820EB-K. It's one of the best 4K players you can own at a reasonable price
@@millerman9991 I contacted Sony and they said x700 cannot play BDR-XL discs. Maybe it’s because I’m burning home videos and putting on XL discs because is greater than 50gb..
You are dead on with Pyscho but no Jaws the transfer and audio is amazing what they did with the mono track only enhance the movie going experience all the rest you are correct.

I honestly thought it was remarkable. The 4K resolution is there to be seen and the Dolby Vision really doesn't enhance the colours. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. Not taking anything away from the arrow Blu-ray because that looks fantastic as well
The ending gets me every single time. I love everything about the movie. The cast the setting the story everything. Great to hear I'm not the only one who enjoyed it
HDR is not only about a wider color gamut. It's also about deeper blacks and much brighter whites, which, of course, gives you many more shades of gray. That's why black and white movies look a lot better in HDR.
You are absolutely correct. But there's no denying when you think of HDR you instantly think of colours. Not that black and white aren't colours but you know what I mean
Lately I've been spending a lot of time with this girl I told you about, so I don't have much time left to be on TH-cam. Hell, I haven't even bought a single movie in at least three months. The last movies I've bought must have been Baby Driver and Last Night in Soho on 4k Blu-ray, which I've told you about several months ago. I think I bought them somewhere in February or maybe early March, if I remember correctly. Anyway, today I found some time to watch one of your videos. It's a great list with some fantastic movies. I saw The Fog in the theater, huge fan of it, my second favorite of John’s behind Halloween, BUT the 4k is a letdown - too dark. The Shout Factory Blu-ray is quite a bit better sad to say.
Hey Jeff you are a lucky man to have seen the fog in the theatre. I never had the pleasure and I'm hoping someday I might get the chance to. Halloween is probably my favourite movie of all time and like I said in the video the only reason why it wasn't in the top 10 was because I felt the 4K transfer was a little underwhelming. So I was trying to be faithful to this top 10. Honestly I have no troubles at all when it comes to the fog and its transfer. There is one scene I can think of when Stevie Wayne is on top of the Lighthouse. That scene looked a little too dark. But other than that it looks remarkable. Everybody's equipment is different.
I absolutely agree with you Jaws looks remarkable and the only reason why I didn't have it in the top 10 is because I don't really see it as a horror movie. A bit more of a creature feature movie
Unfortunately I have not picked it up and I don't think I'll be getting it yet. I've heard great things about it there's just other Editions that I want at the moment. I know I will get around to it soon

The original Dawn of the dead is an odd one for me, I like it but it comes off as silly in some areas. Personally I prefer the 2004 remake and I’m not usually a remake guy. I just think the characters were better and had scarier zombies. My top 3 zombie movies are 1. Return of the living dead 2. Night of the living dead (1990) 3. Night of the living dead (1968).
The dawn of the Dead remake is definitely up there with one of my favourite remakes but I honestly could not put it ahead of the original. Return of the Living Dead is an absolute classic and I thought Dan o'bannon did a great job with that. Tom Savini Night of the Living Dead is another fantastic remake and of course the original another classic

I would throw Re- Animator and Pet Sematary in there but I wouldn’t consider them actual “zombie movies”. They have elements but don’t really fit the zombie movie stereotype but I guess deserve a mention.
Yeah I understand what you mean with re-animator and pet Sematary. Probably the last half an hour of re-animator you would almost put it into the zombie genre. Really is a great movie and I think I'm due a revisit
those advisory logos on the front of the blu ray or 4k cases are brutal. So in your face and just takes away from the art on the front. I think the worst is the Australian "M" logo. Its so big and I can't take my eyes away from it. Just a thought when watching this.
I know they can be quite annoying but I don't really pay too much attention to them if I'm completely honest. But I do know what you mean with the Australian logos. Almost takes a quarter of the cover
I bought my first 4K movie not too long I'll be honest I don't see a difference between the Blu-ray and the 4K my friend said that I need a better cable going to settings and do all this and that I don't know any of that stuff I'm sticking to lure a vivid mode and I'm done
There are so many things that could be wrong. For instance the first 4K movie you bought could Simply Be a very poor 4K disk. Trust me when I say there is a lot of bad ones out there. It also depends on how your television is set as well. You mentioned vivid mode now going by experience that is the last mode you would want to go on to. Everything will look too bright and overblown. Just play with your settings until you find what best suits you and if vivid does that for you then stick with it
There are a lot of factors including size/quality of your screen, how close you sit to it, how you've set it up...and what sort of image you find visually pleasing (highly saturated ? very bright and punchy ? detailed and accurate ? depth in the shadows ?). The biggest factor though is whether or not it's a good disk...not all disks are equal (same with DVDs and Blu-rays). Out of curiosity, what was the "first 4K movie" you bought and are referring to ? In my experience most modern movies are released on very good quality blu-rays and in those cases, if the distributor has done only an "average job" with the 4K and the viewer already has good upscaling from modern equipment then there might not be much of a visual difference for many viewers...in fact, in some cases (and this is ***highly subjective*** and dependent on personal tastes and equipment being used) due to potential brightness/HDR issues, added DNR, colour grading choices or even (in one case I know of) audio choices...the 4K occasionally comes out worse ! I have (for example) deliberately chosen not to upgrade my OT Star Wars Blu-rays (Anakin on the cover set) and LOTR Blu-rays (Gold box ring set) because I was able to see what Empire/Jedi/Fellowship looked like on my equipment in 4K and I didn't like it...Hoth in Empire looks grey and dull on 4K instead of the bright white/blue tinged Hoth we see on the blu-ray...C3PO's shell on the way to Jaba's palace in Jedi looks richer and more "real" than the sorta "slightly artifical" looking version on the 4K...the forest at the start of fellowship looks lush and inviting on the Blu-ray but has an "ill/sterile" tone on the 4K...all of this is just my opinion ofc...many reviewers have praised these 4K disks. In general though, the 4K format is technically (and substantially) superior to Blu-ray so if the distributor does "everything right" and they have a good working source that they can get every last bit of detail from then the 4K will be better...sometimes by a little, sometimes by a LOT ! "Temple of Doom" for example (and I assume the other two in the trilogy but I only tested that one) is a MASSIVE upgrade in 4K and well worth purchasing. 1984 Dune is a MASSIVE upgrade on the 4K...as is "True Romance"...and "The Fog" to name a few.
Alien also looks incredible on a 120” screen with a Sony HDR 4k projector! It’s amazing how some highly reviewed transfers don’t stand up when blown up, particularly blurays. What’s the transfer foe Evil Dead 2 like? Does it compare
It's funny that you just mentioned Evil Dead 2 because I only watched it it around 2 weeks ago on 4k and I honestly cannot remember if the transfer is good or not. Not sure if that's a Bad Sign that I don't remember. Something's telling me that it's not as good as the original but definitely don't take my word for that. Honestly I'm normally better than this but I cannot remember

Hey David. I had a feeling you would hate this top 10 😆 🤣. I have to admit Psycho was a real surprise when it came to 4k. I cannot get over how great it looks. The Shining is absolutely stunning. The only reason why I wasn't higher is because I thought the movies head of it were better. All the transfers in this list look remarkable
I have to admit that would never distract me from this movie. They corrected mistakes and I kind of understand why they did it. But the reason why it's in this top 10 is because it's a fantastic movie and made even better on 4k.
@@millerman9991 Love your you tubes, There have been a few turkeys I have owned and think they have a cheek to be called 4k. Galveston was so dark and River runs red was just bad. I do expect better when asked to pay £20+ for a movie
As you know yourself it's part of the collecting game. You're always going to pick up one or two very poor transfers along the way. Thankfully it doesn't happen too often.

The top 10 in this video I do stick by and all of them I honestly think have monster upgrades over there Blu-ray counterparts. At present I'm 6.5 hours into watching James Clavell's Shogun on blu ray which is an absolute joy to watch. I've got just over 2.5 hours to still watch. Have you ever seen Shogun? Highly recommended if you haven't even though it has nothing whatsoever to do with this video 🤣🤣🤣

Great video countdown and I do have quite a few of these and couldn’t agree more about Dawn of the Dead I bought a 4k tv and player just to watch this to be my first ever 4k viewing. I do think the Blue underground release should get a mention especially Zombie which looks amazing. Thanks for the tip on Hellfest never seen this but it’s on my watch list.

This is one of the most agreeable 'Top 10' film videos I can remember seeing. Hit after hit, after hit. In particular, The Shining, which I watched today on 4K having owned the Blu-Ray for a few years - Kubrick would be very proud of the gorgeous transfer. I might give 'The Thing' another go, I tried to watch it when I was far too young and I got about 4 minutes in before submitting to the terror of it! I picked up the DOTD Second sight box second-hand this week for a bargain of 22.50 had a little ding at the top of the box but everything else is mint, the books, and soundtrack discs. steal of the week. Love this movie so much.

I honestly would love to hear your thoughts on demons when you do get it. @@millerman9991 Hey, I've been a 4Ker for a couple of months now, just got lots of catching up to do! I'd say Aquaman, Kong: Skull Island and The Thing are the standouts from what I've bought so far. I read the reviews of The Thing, same as you, and I couldn't believe I was watching the same disc. It looks gorgeous and the snow/ice looks so beautifully white.
I still can't get over some of the reviews I read for the thing on 4k. I honestly don't know what to say maybe their expectations were too high I honestly don't know but there is no way you can knock on that movie and say the picture looked underwhelming. Looks remarkable

Here Sebastian. I'm shocked to hear that you have not seen the fog since VHS. It's definitely up there in my top 5 greatest horror movies of all time and honestly I was always going to put this at number one. Especially when you see it on 4k. Prince of Darkness is a good movie but definitely not one of my favourite John Carpenter movies. Looks astonishing in 4K as well. If you could Sebastian please let me know what you think of both of them when you get in through the door. Would love to hear your thoughts on it. My summer holidays are coming in 3-weeks. Freakin stellar rundown of *immaculate horror* there...all in tip top home viewing shape...having *The Fog* first resonates with myself greatly, cos *always* had an intense relationship with it due to impressionable age wen i first saw film back in 81 on the the ol telly box(!)
S'funny to me how the xp of seeing classics from bygone eras in the crappiest of formats (22" analog CRT tv, VHS) does little to *dull* the recollection or the thrill of seeing them all first time around...is it just cos filums were *so much better* then...or is it now just a case of format trumps film quality...I'm generalising, but just saw *Top Gun Maverick* in *4DX* and I think it reminded me just how much a truly great film benefits from an amazing, sensory presentation experience.
Hey Nick. I have to admit the fog was always going to be my number one for this top 10 and even though Halloween is my favourite horror movie of all time I felt it's transfer was a little underwhelming when it first came out. So I had to be faithful to this top 10 and not put it in. I have to tell you I completely relate to everything you said about the Fog when we first seen it back in the day. I didn't have nothing to do with picture quality or sound. It was just a remarkable ghost story expertly directed by one of the greatest horror directors at the time.
I'm embarrassed to say that I still haven't seen Top Gun Maverick yet but I've heard some very special things about it. Just waiting to find the time to watch it

Great list. Hell Fest was actually the first movie I ever watched from beginning to end in 4K in January 2019 (technically on a 1440p screen so doesn't quite count perhaps).

My TV that I use is a LG 65" CX OLED and the 4k player is a Panasonic UB820. Both are top of the line and honestly I think it's one of the best OLED TVs out there. I've done a video on it if you like to check it out. I will leave the link here

Halloween 3 is definitely not an unpopular opinion Gary because it would have been in this top 10 only for I could only have one movie per franchise. I can't tell you how much I love that movie. I watch it nearly every month.

You're absolutely right a lot of people have not gotten over the fact that Michael Myers was not in Halloween 3. I've only just recently converted John over and Mondo Chelloveck Movies. He was against this movie for so long until I sent him a copy of it and when he watched it again he appreciate the movie for what it is and now he loves it

Awesome, review. I just watched again, The Hills Have Eyes (unrated 2006) Wow I forgotten how graphic this film was. On a side note, I recommend on Netflix, The Man from Toronto, fun and entertaining. I actually watched it twice last week, the second time with the girlfriend and she loved it. I really liked "Halloween" back in the day but not seen it in decades, never saw any of the sequels...I need watch Halloween 1 again...and then check out the sequel by the sounds of it ! 🙂
The first three Halloween movies I regard as some of the finest horror movies I've ever seen. Bear in mind Michael Myers is not in Halloween 3 it's a completely different story. The sequel to Halloween I don't see it as a sequel it's a continuation. It feels like one movie and if you are a fan of the original I definitely recommend checking it out. I watched a movie just recently on 4k and if I had this movie chances are it would have been close to number one the Amityville Horror. To me it's the perfect 4K transfer. I couldn't find a single flaw with it and if you are a fan I definitely recommend picking that up on 4k.
@@millerman9991 Nice1, I'll definitely keep an eye out for Halloween 1-3 then...interesting that you mentioned "Amityville Horror" as I've never seen that one but my neighbour mentioned it a few weeks back...I assume you're talking about the original from 1979 (looks like they remade it in 2005).
Oh I'm definitely talking about the original. Don't get me wrong the remake with Ryan Reynolds is not too bad either but it doesn't come remotely close to the original. Give it a go and see what you think. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised

Would be a great 10 to recommend someone new to horror, what a treat they'd be in for. Have to agree fully on demons 1+2 I watched both recently on 4k and looked jaw dropping compared to the old blu rays. I still have to see alien and Dawn of the dead yet on 4k. And going to check that tremors 4k which I just picked up and showed on insta. Maybe an honourable mention aswell Keith to the howling on 4k, recently watched it and those amazing effects looks so much better now, and so many dark shots in the forest with the hdr.
Hey Steve. I watch tremors around 3 weeks ago and trust me when I say you are in for a treat when you see that in 4k. Looks remarkable. There was a few movies that I wanted to put into this top 10 but I couldn't put them in and the Howling was definitely one of them and American Werewolf in London was another. Probably should have done a top 15 😆 🤣
Nice list, I know it's a combination of Film & 4K Transfer but I'd find it very hard to do a Top 10 Horror and not include 'American Werewolf in London' but I'm not sure how it looks in 4k tho.
American Werewolf is a phenomenal movie and the 4K transfer looks beautiful as well. I just couldn't squeeze it in to the top 10. If it was a top 15 list it definitely would have been there.

It's good to know that Psycho, Halloween 2 and The Fog are a step up picture quality from the Blu-Ray thou I think older films

Hey Carl you are absolutely spot-on when it comes to older movies on 4k. I honestly think that's when the format really gets the shine. Nowadays when you look at recent movies the only real upgrade you see is colour. Not taking anything away from the new movies that come out because some of them do look remarkable. But I do think the benefits of 4K lie with the older movies. That's a shame to hear about the 3d on Friday the 13th Part 3. I was almost certain it was active 3D and not the Anaglyph.
John Carpenter is my favorite director and im so happy with the transfer and look of his film on 4K. He truly derserves it. Great list agree with most of it. However i would have found room for Suspiria. An absolute stunning transfer.
Suspiria looks absolutely remarkable and and if I did a top 15 it probably would have fit in there. It's a great movie as well and I really need to check out it's remake. I've heard very mixed things about it and I heard it's nothing near as good as the original

Can't argue with any of those choices really, Hell Fest is a new one to me though so I might check that out. Alien UHD is one the few movies I own with HDR10+ too. I've always thought The Fog was one of Carpenter's most underrated movies, I actually prefer it to Halloween.

Its on Amazon's website and its Night of the Living Dead Ultimate Collector's Exclusive Edition .The figurine features an arm coming out of a grave, looks superb. I'm not into horror movies but i know you are so when i saw it i thought you would love it. I think its from Germany and it has a steelbook version too.

Suspiria looks fantastic on 4K and the movie itself is very good I just found the other 10 movies in this top 10 better than suspiria. Again not taking anything away from suspiria because it's a great movie.

To be honest I am a bit of a traditionalist and I prefer the theatrical. It's what I grew up by and it's what I love
Psycho and all Hitchcock ar great on 4k, especially Vertigo! Demons is amazing on 4K too, totally agree. Love that set! Dawn of the Dead is also my number 1, love the 4K set and I watch all 3 cuts of the film.

Could you share which bluray player you are using ? I got a Sony Ubp-x700 but realized that it cannot play XL 100gb discs. I wonder if are there a lot of uhd discs that fits in 50gb discs..
Hey Andre are you sure that your player won't play 100gb discs because that sounds very strange to me. Every 4K player should play Every 4K title. I'm using a Panasonic DP-UB820EB-K. It's one of the best 4K players you can own at a reasonable price

Hmmm, I’ve got the Arrow Video release of the Thing on blu, been wondering for a while if it’s worth upgrading……
I honestly thought it was remarkable. The 4K resolution is there to be seen and the Dolby Vision really doesn't enhance the colours. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. Not taking anything away from the arrow Blu-ray because that looks fantastic as well

HDR is not only about a wider color gamut. It's also about deeper blacks and much brighter whites, which, of course, gives you many more shades of gray. That's why black and white movies look a lot better in HDR.
You are absolutely correct. But there's no denying when you think of HDR you instantly think of colours. Not that black and white aren't colours but you know what I mean

Lately I've been spending a lot of time with this girl I told you about, so I don't have much time left to be on TH-cam. Hell, I haven't even bought a single movie in at least three months. The last movies I've bought must have been Baby Driver and Last Night in Soho on 4k Blu-ray, which I've told you about several months ago. I think I bought them somewhere in February or maybe early March, if I remember correctly.
Anyway, today I found some time to watch one of your videos. It's a great list with some fantastic movies. Thanks for the interesting list and video.

I saw The Fog in the theater, huge fan of it, my second favorite of John’s behind Halloween, BUT the 4k is a letdown - too dark. The Shout Factory Blu-ray is quite a bit better sad to say.
Hey Jeff you are a lucky man to have seen the fog in the theatre. I never had the pleasure and I'm hoping someday I might get the chance to. Halloween is probably my favourite movie of all time and like I said in the video the only reason why it wasn't in the top 10 was because I felt the 4K transfer was a little underwhelming. So I was trying to be faithful to this top 10. Honestly I have no troubles at all when it comes to the fog and its transfer. There is one scene I can think of when Stevie Wayne is on top of the Lighthouse. That scene looked a little too dark. But other than that it looks remarkable. Everybody's equipment is different.

I absolutely agree with you Jaws looks remarkable and the only reason why I didn't have it in the top 10 is because I don't really see it as a horror movie. A bit more of a creature feature movie

The original Dawn of the dead is an odd one for me, I like it but it comes off as silly in some areas. Personally I prefer the 2004 remake and I’m not usually a remake guy. I just think the characters were better and had scarier zombies. My top 3 zombie movies are 1. Return of the living dead 2. Night of the living dead (1990) 3. Night of the living dead (1968).
The dawn of the Dead remake is definitely up there with one of my favourite remakes but I honestly could not put it ahead of the original. Return of the Living Dead is an absolute classic and I thought Dan o'bannon did a great job with that. Tom Savini Night of the Living Dead is another fantastic remake and of course the original another classic

I would throw Re- Animator and Pet Sematary in there but I wouldn’t consider them actual “zombie movies”. They have elements but don’t really fit the zombie movie stereotype but I guess deserve a mention.
Yeah I understand what you mean with re-animator and pet Sematary. Probably the last half an hour of re-animator you would almost put it into the zombie genre. Really is a great movie and I think I'm due a revisit

The Exorcist and The Wicker Man (both 1973) deserve a long overdue 4k release.
Thankfully we are getting one of them this year. The Exorcist was confirmed for 4K. I'm sure the Wicker Man should be due a 4K anniversary as well

those advisory logos on the front of the blu ray or 4k cases are brutal. So in your face and just takes away from the art on the front. I think the worst is the Australian "M" logo. Its so big and I can't take my eyes away from it. Just a thought when watching this.
I know they can be quite annoying but I don't really pay too much attention to them if I'm completely honest. But I do know what you mean with the Australian logos. Almost takes a quarter of the cover

I bought my first 4K movie not too long I'll be honest I don't see a difference between the Blu-ray and the 4K my friend said that I need a better cable going to settings and do all this and that I don't know any of that stuff I'm sticking to lure a vivid mode and I'm done
There are so many things that could be wrong. For instance the first 4K movie you bought could Simply Be a very poor 4K disk. Trust me when I say there is a lot of bad ones out there. It also depends on how your television is set as well. You mentioned vivid mode now going by experience that is the last mode you would want to go on to. Everything will look too bright and overblown. Just play with your settings until you find what best suits you and if vivid does that for you then stick with it
There are a lot of factors including size/quality of your screen, how close you sit to it, how you've set it up...and what sort of image you find visually pleasing (highly saturated ? very bright and punchy ? detailed and accurate ? depth in the shadows ?). The biggest factor though is whether or not it's a good disk...not all disks are equal (same with DVDs and Blu-rays). Out of curiosity, what was the "first 4K movie" you bought and are referring to ?
In my experience most modern movies are released on very good quality blu-rays and in those cases, if the distributor has done only an "average job" with the 4K and the viewer already has good upscaling from modern equipment then there might not be much of a visual difference for many viewers...in fact, in some cases (and this is ***highly subjective*** and dependent on personal tastes and equipment being used) due to potential brightness/HDR issues, added DNR, colour grading choices or even (in one case I know of) audio choices...the 4K occasionally comes out worse !
I have (for example) deliberately chosen not to upgrade my OT Star Wars Blu-rays (Anakin on the cover set) and LOTR Blu-rays (Gold box ring set) because I was able to see what Empire/Jedi/Fellowship looked like on my equipment in 4K and I didn't like it...Hoth in Empire looks grey and dull on 4K instead of the bright white/blue tinged Hoth we see on the blu-ray...C3PO's shell on the way to Jaba's palace in Jedi looks richer and more "real" than the sorta "slightly artifical" looking version on the 4K...the forest at the start of fellowship looks lush and inviting on the Blu-ray but has an "ill/sterile" tone on the 4K...all of this is just my opinion ofc...many reviewers have praised these 4K disks.
In general though, the 4K format is technically (and substantially) superior to Blu-ray so if the distributor does "everything right" and they have a good working source that they can get every last bit of detail from then the 4K will be better...sometimes by a little, sometimes by a LOT ! "Temple of Doom" for example (and I assume the other two in the trilogy but I only tested that one) is a MASSIVE upgrade in 4K and well worth purchasing. 1984 Dune is a MASSIVE upgrade on the 4K...as is "True Romance"...and "The Fog" to name a few.

Alien also looks incredible on a 120” screen with a Sony HDR 4k projector! It’s amazing how some highly reviewed transfers don’t stand up when blown up, particularly blurays. What’s the transfer foe Evil Dead 2 like? Does it compare
It's funny that you just mentioned Evil Dead 2 because I only watched it it around 2 weeks ago on 4k and I honestly cannot remember if the transfer is good or not. Not sure if that's a Bad Sign that I don't remember. Something's telling me that it's not as good as the original but definitely don't take my word for that. Honestly I'm normally better than this but I cannot remember

I have to admit Psycho was a real surprise when it came to 4k. I cannot get over how great it looks. The Shining is absolutely stunning. The only reason why I wasn't higher is because I thought the movies head of it were better. All the transfers in this list look remarkable

Evil dead 2013 is worth 4k
Definitely want to pick it up sometime in the future. Probably one of my favourite remakes
Hard disagree on The Evil Dead. They digitally edited out all the technical mistakes that give the movie its charm. I hate that.
I have to admit that would never distract me from this movie. They corrected mistakes and I kind of understand why they did it. But the reason why it's in this top 10 is because it's a fantastic movie and made even better on 4k.
I thought Hellfest was rubbish, I bought it watched it once then sold it

@@millerman9991 Love your you tubes, There have been a few turkeys I have owned and think they have a cheek to be called 4k. Galveston was so dark and River runs red was just bad. I do expect better when asked to pay £20+ for a movie
As you know yourself it's part of the collecting game. You're always going to pick up one or two very poor transfers along the way. Thankfully it doesn't happen too often.
