    If a film is shot on 16mm like Dog Soldiers or Henry, don't expect a significant resolution increase on 4k. There can be improvements with encoding and HDR of course, but I think the idea of releasing a 16mm film on 4k is to provide the best possible copy of the film. There's been several standard blu-ray's that only show small improvements over older DVD's due to source limitations, like films shot on SD cameras or from the early days of Digital Intermediates. 28 Days Later and The Celebration/Festen were shot on MiniDV cameras and filmed out on 35mm, the main improvement's those Blu-Ray's provide is higher video bitrates and uncompressed audio. Sorry for the ramble, this type of stuff interest's me.

      No I completely understand when it comes to movies being shot in 16 mm and you're absolutely right you shouldn't expect too much from them. But what I do expect is to get something similar to what we got with evil dead or maniac on 4K. Both movies were shot on 16mm and still look phenomenal. Unfortunately dog soldiers on this 4K release is riddled in film dirt and there's also no HDR. And that's why I have it at number two. Henry I honestly think what the accomplished with that 4K disc could have been accomplished with a Blu-ray and that's why I have that in my top 10. Please don't apologise for rambling on because I love reading comments like this and thank you so much for taking the time out to write it

      @@millerman9991 Thank's, one thing I have remembered just now is that discussion around 2k DI's also affects alot of BR's, as film scanning and remastering techniques have gone along way since early uses of the technology. I recently ordered a BR of Irreversible, as it's likely gonna be the best the film will ever look. It was shot on 16mm, scanned and edited at HD and finished at 35mm. So while it looks HD, it never look's Full HD. As the film has alot of CGI and digital effect's, it would be costly and very hard to accurately to do a full restoration of the film.
      I actually looked at some screenshot's of the 4k BR of Dog Soldiers online again, and I actually think it look's worse than the BR. The bitrate is really low, so the grain is significantly mushier than the standard release. The main reason why I don't think it caused much of an uproar was because Dog Soldiers has had bad BR after bad BR, from a DVD master that's barely HD to a cinema print because they couldn't find the negative. So the German BR is currently the best release atm, untill Second Sight's remaster.
      I do wonder if there's gonna be 4K BR re-releases of alot of films later down the line like there was with BR. The old BR's for Maniac and Henry were woeful compared to their later releases, and there's hundreds of examples, especially recently with so many 4k releases compared to early BR efforts.

    I disagree with your take on Gremlins - it’s the best it’s looked, the original was that way due to film stock of the time, so in my book that makes it a good transfer of the original.

    • @millerman9991
      @millerman9991  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gremlins has a history of poor transfers and I honestly think it continued on to 4k. I found the picture to be lifeless soft and the HDR done little to nothing to improve things. If you stack up gremlins against other 80s movies that came out in 4k you'll probably understand where I was going with it

      @@millerman9991 I feel Ghostbusters is a similar case, and from the same year - however my point was that it doesn’t make it a bad transfer if it doesn’t have that “wow” look. In my book a good transfer is a good representation of how the film originally looked.

    • @millerman9991

      @@RetroReels it goes without saying that gremlins does look better than the previous Blu-ray. But it doesn't make it a good-looking 4K transfer and that's why it in my top 10. This is great Keith, although you list your 'worst', for me it is more valuable than your best because 4K costs so much money and no one wants to waste money on zero upgrade at all and especially downgrades. My very first 4K was Goodfellas, as you can imagine I just thought 4K was a terrible invention. It wasn't until I saw the original Suspiria on 4K that I realised it's true potential. Any other 4Ks that are really bad, you should do this as a regular video, it's really a valuable informative video and you get my thumbs up:) My only regret is that you had to purchase these 4Ks in the first place but hats off to you for passing on your knowledge. Big fan of your work, great review! 😎👍😎👍💯

I'm sorry to hear that Goodfellas was your first 4K purchase. You must have been demoralised by 4K at that point. But like you said suspiria what a transfer and what a movie. The good thing with my videos now is everytime I review a new 4K release I am going to feature comparisons with the Blu-ray and you will get a good sense of how better the transfer looks over the Blu-ray. Thank you so much for checking out the video and leaving such a kind supportive comment. I really do appreciate it and sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you

    Glad you have T2 and Goodfellas in there, mate. The latter made me think that 4K blu-ray might actually be a giant con, because like I mentioned before it was one of my very first 4K pickups. Really interesting video Keith and although it's unlikely I'd have picked up any of these anyway (bar one), it's good to be able to see which stinkers to avoid. Weirdly, I actually watched Suicide Squad just before I saw your post and I didn't think it was that bad. Very dark, but I wondered if that was the filmmakers intent? The colours looked nice and bright and sharp. I'll have to check out the blu-ray to see how wrong I am! 😀 Anyway, keep up the good work. Hey Andy the one thing I probably should have said in this video when it comes to these 4K transfers is everyone's going to have a different opinion on these transfers because everyone's equipment is different. I have an OLED TV and a lot of the suicide squads black levels look very grey and it's all down to the HDR. But when you do compare the Blu-ray to the 4K release you will see little to no difference in my opinion. But I would love to hear your thoughts on if you ever do get around to looking at the Blu-ray. Thank you so much Andy for coming over and checking out my video and for leaving such a beautiful kind supportive comment. You have no idea how much that means to me and I really do appreciate it

    Hi Keith, T2 I actually always watch my Skynet edition of on Blu-ray over this 4k you shown which honestly was the release that turned me off from 4k physical media. Gremlins doesn't surprise me but I feel that it probably couldn't ever look great without becoming a DNR mess, Henry honestly doesn't surprise me as it's so far a stretch for 4k , a low budget movie that if expect just a decent enough blu-ray of. Goodfellas no surprise either as I feel no blu-ray release is anything more than acceptable. Phantom menace doesn't even deserve a physical media release 🤣
    The most surprising title on this list to me is Iron man as for me I remember the Blu-ray being a major selling point for me on the format.
    Fantastic video mate and a real eye opener.

    • @millerman9991
      @millerman9991  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's actually a great point that you made when I came to gremlins. It's just one of those movies that's never going to look great and like you said if they applied DNR and try to sharpen it a bit they would almost ruin it even more. So maybe I should have cut gremlins a bit of slack. T2 on 4k need I say anymore. Unfortunately Ironman has a lot of DNR applied to the picture. It can be misleading but when you look carefully it's there to be seen. It wouldn't be a top 10 worst transfers if I didn't throw in a Star Wars movie and it just had to be Phantom Menace. Crap transfer for a crap movie. Thanks so much Dan for checking out the video my friend. I would love to see you do a video very similar just to see what you would come up with

      Thank you so much John I really appreciate that. I completely understand why Gemini man is your worst. But the only reason why i didn't enter it into my top 10 is because the 4K resolution is so evident and the HDR colours are fantastic. It's the 60 frames that letting it down. If you remove the 60 frames it will look phenomenal. The Hunt for Red October was just a black mess.

      @@millerman9991 If I ever do a ten worst I expect my pick of Gemini Man will cause a lot of upset. I think it's a generational thing and if you've grown up playing computer games then you are more likely to like the look of Gemini Man. But I bet it looked amazing at 120fps in 3D so as much as I can't stand the look of the 4K disc I suspect I might really appreciate a big screen 3D screening. And I don't much care for 3D normally.

I would have loved to have seen a version of it where it didn't have the 60 frames because I honestly think it could be one of the best looking movies out there on the format if it wasn't for that. Never mind that the movie itself was complete crap

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@millerman9991 There is no way of correcting it because the motion blur just isn't there. In normal vision we're seeing at about 24fps so real life has motion blur and that I think is why Gemini Man looks more like a video game rather than a film. It isn't the best movie ever made anyway so it's all rather academic really. I also think it may have had the much maligned digital noise reduction applied to it just to help it look even more unrealistic. There are some adverts that look similar in that regard so it's possibly directors and video editors being clever and applying noise reduction to make a production look a little surreal.
      John.

    Fantastic video and thoughts. I think at this point, the kit you have really starts to matter, like having a great TV really makes a difference. I'm sure most people here have spent good money on a good set up, but can imagine those who haven't forked out for a Dolby Vision compatible TV finding themselves underwhelmed by the format. It's one you've really got to invest in, and god it ain't cheap!
    The Indies are doing god's work here for sure . Blue Underground for example have produced some of the best looking 4K discs I've seen and these are indie restorations of old b-movies!
    On a side note, I've been caught out a couple of occasions having watched half a film and thought, this just looks like a Blu-ray! But then realising the auto selection on my TV/player hadn't switched on the HDR for some reason, I restarted the player and suddenly the image clarity and colours popping is on another level. I'm sure that's just my setup, but bloody annoying when it happens!

    • @millerman9991
      @millerman9991  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To be honest when it comes to Dolby Vision I'm not sure if I'm entirely convinced of it when you compare it to HDR. I find it hard sometimes to tell the difference and that's why I don't really promote it too much in my videos. Not taking anything away from it because a lot of my dolby vision 4K releases that I have look great. It's just they probably would have looked great with HDR aswell.
      I'm embarrassed to say that I do not own a single blue underground release. But I have a friend that owns them all when it comes to 4K and every single one of them apparently look amazing. I'm just waiting for the day that someone sells a bulk of them on eBay and hopefully I can pick them up.
      I know there is a few Blu-ray players out there where you have to activate the Dolby vision or HDR which I find absolutely ridiculous. There is nothing worse than watching a movie halfway through and then you realise that HDR is not on.

    • @spicemelange
      @spicemelange ปีที่แล้ว

      @@millerman9991 thanks man. Yeah, I guess the Dolby Vision is supposed to give you a more accurate HDR grading per scene as the director intended, rather than the one grading applied wholesale, which is what the standard HDR does. But I will say I have seen trailers for movie on TH-cam in HDR that made me go "Wow" why didn't it look that good on my Blu-ray player in Dolby Vision?! But whether that is an accurate interpretation of how the movie was actually intended to look is another thing.

    Hey there, great video.
    I am also a collector and recently came across your channel. Will absolutely be watching your stuff going forward.
    I wanted to comment briefly on the LE Arrow release of Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer. This copy of the film is a triple dip for me as I own both the original MPI Blu ray, the 30rh anniversary remaster from MPI/Dark Sky from 2016, and now this 4k release from Arrow.
    The film is not a pretty one due to its budget and I also think David Naughton intended this. That being said, in comparison to the two previous Blu rays, the new 4k is phenomenal. When this was announced I was somewhat concerned they were going to heavily DNR & EE the film to artificially give it that smooth look and sharp edging.
    Arrow did not disappoint, the remaster they did is just about perfect, retaining all the film grain and preserving the film makers original vision, and comparing them side the other 2 bd releases there is no comparison.
    Henry is not a pretty film and that is by design.

      Hey Adam thanks so much for coming over and checking out my video. I really appreciate it.
      I have to admit I just recently got hold of a Blu-ray of this movie and honestly I can't see much of a difference in upgrades if I'm completely honest and that's the issue I have with this 4K transfer. I felt everything they accomplished with this transfer could have easily been accomplished on Blu-ray. Maybe a 4K master instead of a 4K edition. There is no question that the movie is ugly and it's all down to the fact that it was shot in 16 mm. But when I compare that to other 16mm movies like the Evil Dead or Maniac on 4K there is a Night and Day difference over those movies to this and unfortunately that's why I have it in this top 10.

    A year ago I purchased a 4k player and returned it the day after. For one thing because I didn't realize my Home Cinema could only work with a blu-ray player but mainly because I tried several movies from different decades and none really impressed me. I noted slight improvements but not worth the money of having to get a new Home Cinema. Maybe in a couple of years from now...
    Besides, some old movies with miniatures and the like look worse on 4k because they are a bit more noticeable and break the illusion and some CGI-laden films from lately really look somewhat cartoonish. Like videogames.

    I find your views regarding Gremlins interesting. Unfortunately I haven't watched the UHD, or any UHD disc in fact, so I can only speak based on captures/screenshots that are converted from HDR to SDR, but still: The Gremlins UHD looks pretty solid to me with improved/more natural colors, grain hasn't been scrubbed away and it _does_ have more detail as well.
    Agree with Iron Man, and the Bourne movies as a similar offender, where the Blu-ray really seems to be better, the Star Wars Trilogy (too much EE especially and a bit too much DNR, looking too artificial) and GoodFellas (black crushing, blueish-reddish tint for colors). Also share your take on old movies shot on 16mm or so, that don't benefit from the 4K resolution and don't get an HDR pass or where it doesn't make much difference - don't see the reason to spend that money when a standard Blu-ray will give me the same experience, given that it got a good encode, seems like a money grab.
    Now, I kinda agree with T2 as well, given that I have held out buying a UHD and am more content watching the dated Blu-ray with its known flaws, but it's not completely bad to deserve the "Worst UHD" title IMO - there are quite some scenes that show remarkable detail/resolution I'd say, so I think the scanning & restoration has been great, but the mastering is the only culprit, or the DNR primarily. And it's really a bummer considering how popular and acclaimed this movie is. I still hope we'll see a remastered version with much less DNR, maybe for the 35th Anniversary; still some way to go. There's also some incentive for having the extended scenes remastered I think, where this could be revised while at it. Would probably still come with the color timing changes that I'm not exactly happy with, but I think one can get used to it.
    I would probably add Batman Begins to the list, to the first half. I really like the movie, but the red push leading to unhealthy flesh tones in combination with too much DNR at times makes me stay away from it and hope for a remaster in the future. What is your take on that one, how does the HDR work there?

      Hey Dennis. It's been a while since I sat down and watched Batman Begins on 4k but I do remember being completely underwhelmed by it. You're absolutely spot-on there was a lot of DNR and the colours look a little saturated if I remember correctly. Looked nothing near as good as the Dark Knight or Rises. Again I'm just going off memory. The one thing I never think to mention in my videos and I really need to start doing it. Everyone is going to have a different viewing experience when it comes to 4K and it's all down to equipment. I'm watching on a flagship OLED TV and and maybe what I'm seeing is a lot more noticeable than what your average viewer would see. But a lot of this top 10 there is no denying how poor there transfers are. But that's just one man's opinion 😆 🤣

    A few notes with some of these titles
    Gremlin, I would have to disagree with you here. It's actually a very good disc and is the most pleasing viewing of the film ever on home media. It's just that the original camera negative never looked pristine or top tier visually, so honestly the 4k disc represents the best it can possibly look. Honestly , I have no idea why some reviewer put this at their worst list. Far from it.
    Jurassic Park 3 is not a great disc overall agreed on that. The main thing I wanted to point out is that the transfer was actually pretty good. It's the mastered brightness and muted colors that really kills this disc. Agreed that the original Jurassic Park is in dire need of a remaster worthy of that amazing film.
    Goodfellas is another one where the brightness was only mastered in a certain nit, which resulted in many tvs having issues properly displaying this movie in a proper brightness. It can be really dim. I believe a remastered disc with dolby vision would really change most people's opinions of this film. The transfer itself is pretty great, so that was never the issue.
    Other than that, the rest of the list is pretty spot on.

      @millerman9991  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's great to hear that you got something out of gremlins when it comes to picture quality but for me I think when it comes to 4K standards it's a poor showing. I said it numerous times but whatever they accomplished when it comes to this 4K disc could easily have been accomplished on Blu-ray.
      The entire Jurassic Park collection and that's even including the Jurassic World movies are lacking when it comes on 4k. Especially the original trilogy it deserves so much better than what we get here.
      As for Goodfellas I honestly think it's one of the worst transfers I've seen on the format. It just has a lifeless looking picture and like you said maybe a brand new Dolby Vision implementation is maybe what the movie needs.

    I’m surprised that no one ever seems to mention just how bad the first film in the ghostbusters franchise is on 4K. The blu Ray is better than the 4K in every way except maybe sound. Also the film grain seems much heavier on the 4K than the original blu ray release. Although the blu ray bundled with the 4K also seems to be heavier on grain than the original. But it’s definitely made worse on the 4K. I was really disappointed having purchased it on release day. I totally agree with your top 10 worst though. As for Dog Soldiers, the second sight release is pretty amazing when considering the fact that they only had a 16mm film stock to work with in the first place. Love second sight. All the best!

    I'm as guilty as everyone else for buying 4K versions of titles assuming they will be better than the standard bluray. I've been caught a few times with disappointing 4k's of titles I already had on bluray and just couldn't tell the difference.
    Worst thing is bad HDR where the picture just looks bright and you don't get the colour depth and richness. Best thing to do is watch a review comparison with the 4k before upgrading your bluray or buying a title for the first time. None of the titles in this video appeal to me so don't really apply but good video nonetheless, thanks.

      I think we have all been guilty of it. Thankfully nowadays I do my homework when it comes to picking up 4K releases. I have been burnt too many times and to be honest I'm starting to get sick of it. You are absolutely spot-on when it comes to HDR especially if it's been used aggressively. I love Mad Max Fury Road on 4K but the HDR does make a lot of the Flames in that very animated looking and it can be a bit distracting. But when HDR is used right it can look spectacular

    • @radleystark6561
      @radleystark6561 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@millerman9991 Yes I agree, HDR done well is amazing. I actually watch the Resident Evil movies (the live action ones) a lot because they look great in 4K with great use of HDR. I'd say HDR is more important with 4K than the resolution increase, specially with how good standard blurays look these days. You can get the entire RE set in 4K in one box now if you fancy taking a look at it.
      But yeah, I don't expect everything to look like Bladerunner 2049 but you expect some kind of value for the big price difference with these 4k releases.

    Shame about Iron Man. It's from when Marvel films were actually good, as fims and I have a particular soft spot for it because I bought it for my dad, who was about 70 at the time, on dvd. He used to watch things The A-Team and Knight Rider, with me, when I was only wee (we probably watched Blue Thunder and Street Hawk, together, as well).
