  • A discussion of my 10 favorite 4K UHD releases to date, plus some honorable mentions. These are demo-worthy, reference-quality 4K titles on physical media that really show off everything the 4K format is capable of.
    For those interested in buying the Studiocanal 4K release of the Fifth Element, it's available at the following Amazon U.S. link (ignore the "Region B" note in the listing. The 4K disc is region free, and there is no blu-ray included with this release):
    www.amazon.com/The-Fifth-Elem...
    Also, if you're interested in the limited edition Dawn of the Dead 4K box I displayed (UK release from Second Sight -- there is no U.S. release), you can also still order it from Amazon U.S. at the following link. It comes with three region-free 4K discs (3 cuts of the film) and then a special features blu-ray disc that is Region B. www.amazon.com/Dawn-Dead-4K-U...
    Side note: This video also functions as an unofficial "Back to Basics" installment, since it is partially intended for those who are new to 4K and just starting out with building a collection.

      Great choices! I haven't seen the Lawrence 4K yet, but I hear it is absolutely incredible. I'll definitely need to add that to my pick-up list at some point (if they release a standard ed. 4K... I know that killer steelbook set went out of print pretty quickly). And yes, Dune is also amazing on 4K. Can't wait for part 2!

    Some great picks here, as a fan of 4K there’s a few here I’ll have to check out, I watched the amazing ‘Pulp Fiction’ last night on 4K disc for the first time and my goodness, they did an incredible job with the picture on that one. A film I’ve seen more times than should be allowed but on 4K disk, it was just wow.

    • @TheOriginalFuzz
      @TheOriginalFuzz  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yeah agreed! Pulp is just killer on 4K. They did an amazing job with it. Have you picked up Reservoir Dogs yet? I thought that transfer was arguably even better than Pulp (if you can believe it... although they're very close). I'm really hoping we get Jackie Brown on 4K soon (my personal favorite from the Tarantino catalog). Thanks for watching!

    Suspiria is a title I never knew of and bought the 4K used off a facebook seller since so many youtubers were praising it when it came out. I was stunned by how much I didn't care about the story because the visuals and that Atmos track were so good on my setup. The Thing is definitely one that surprised me how good it looked. Some not mentioned and different genres:
    Apocalypse Now
    Awaken (Gunpowder & Sky release) is and art piece with incredible picture. No story, possible minutes worth of dialog, just stunning imagery and music. If you have a good suboofer setup the music will surprise you.
    Basic Instinct (Studio Canal) I can't get over how good that looked.
    Coraline Just WOW
    My Fair Lady
    Shadow (Well Go USA) Mostly black and white and with subtitles. Just a beautifully shot movie.
    They Live 4K transfer far exceeded any expectation I have for any film with alone this one.

    • @TheOriginalFuzz
      @TheOriginalFuzz  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Great stuff! I do have Apocalypse Now on 4K, but I still haven't watched it yet since I bought it. I definitely need to give that one a spin, as I hear the 4K is fantastic. And I agree, They Live turned out amazing! I have that gorgeous Scream Factory steelbook, and I think SF knocked it out of the park, both with the packaging/artwork and the restoration/transfer itself. I still need to pick up Basic Instinct on 4K... I'm a big Michael Douglas fan, but I've still not upgraded that title yet from blu-ray. It's on my list though. Thanks for watching!

    A couple of nights ago my wife and I watched the VS of Amityville Horror on 4K.
    It looked absolutely amazing.

But the film just really comes alive in Vinegar Syndrome's hands. Didn't know it could look that good!

    The most stunning 4K of a movie shot on film (in my collection) is: The Final Countdown (1980) from Blue Underground. It was scanned at 16-bit/4K. The scenes of the F-14 Tomcats flying over the Pacific Ocean have tremendous depth. A few of the special effects don't hold up but overall it's better than Top Gun in that regard. Gemini Man was the best experience I ever had watching a 3D movie in a theater, 3D + HFR is like being in a Holodeck.

    • @TheOriginalFuzz
      @TheOriginalFuzz  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Oh yeah! I love The Final Countdown. I totally forgot about that one, or I would've at least mentioned it. I too have that Blue Underground 4K and it's fantastic! They did an amazing job with the transfer. Plus, I saw that one in the theater with my dad when it first came out, so there's definitely a nostalgic connection for me. I would've loved to have seen Gemini Man in the theater... it wasn't on my radar at the time, and I didn't really know much about HFR or how the film was made back then. Thanks for watching!

    • @TheOriginalFuzz
      @TheOriginalFuzz  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Sas-wk9lj Hmmm... I'm not really sure how to respond to that, honestly. No special equipment here... the film just looks amazing on the 4K format to my eyes. It's easily the best this particular film has ever looked -- a viewpoint that seems to be the wide consensus on this release, based on everyone else I've talked to about this who also owns it. It's frequently cited among other collectors as one of the best 4K restorations Blue Underground has ever released. It certainly does not look like a 720p upscaled picture to me. But it is a 40+ year-old movie shot on film, so if you're not a fan of film grain or what not, maybe it's not your cup of tea? Sorry to hear you didn't care for this one as much.

      I read that it was shot on 2k digital cameras, so that is probably why. Not sure what 2k is 1080p or 1440p? That said, HDR would be incredible for this one. I’m not sure again what they can do if it was shot in digital without HDR, if they have to fake it or how that is different from HDR for film shot movies.

    Great video! I happen to have most of these titles and they don't disappoint. One 4K disc I feel doesn’t get NEARLY the recognition it deserves is “The Revenant”. Yeah the film itself probably isn’t that widely remembered, but I was blown away by the image quality when I first watched it. The movie was shot outdoors and contains loads of landscape shots which really take advantage of the 4K format. I would definitely recommend it! One other movie worth having is "Coraline". Is it worth it paying the money to upgrade from Blu-ray to 4k in your opinion for the 5th element or not really considering I only have a 55 inch hdr 4k at the moment? I’ve upgraded my sound system and I can already tell you I’ve preferred buying a disk over streaming as the audio quality alone is worth the money. Thanks for watching and weighing in Nick! Really appreciate it. The source footage for Gemini Man was shot digitally at 120 fps, but you're right it was only shown at 120 on select screens (3D) during the theatrical run. I would've loved to have seen it in 3D at 120, but the movie wasn't really on my radar back then. But I think even at 60 FPS, this movie looks ridiculously good! And I agree, I would love to see more films embrace higher frame rates. I personally really dig it.

    You clearly have a love for the format and offered a lot of great recommendations! I definitely plan on picking some of these up. • @TheOriginalFuzz
      @TheOriginalFuzz  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      You bring up a great point (and a totally fair one at that). I get that audio is a huge factor for a lot of home theater enthusiasts. But honestly, with movies, the audio is not something I feel qualified to talk about, because I don't have an Atmos setup -- so I can't evaluate the audio properly. I'm still just using a traditional 5.1 surround system (no height speakers, etc.). So that's the main reason I focus primarily on the visuals. It's weird, because I am a big audio guy when it comes to music, but admittedly for movies, the audio isn't as critical for me. Part of the reason is just because a lot of my movie viewing happens late at night after the family goes to bed, etc., so I often have to use headphones for night viewing. I'm not always able to watch a film with even my full 5.1 system. I can tell the difference between different mixes when I do use my 5.1 speakers (Atmos vs. 5.1 vs. DTS-X, etc.), but the audio overall is just not something I feel I can give very good information about when discussing these films, so I just don't really talk about it much. Was just randomly recommended this video, and it was a really good watch!
    From the video and the comments section, it seems like if it was a movie good enough to be broadly popular (or at least, a movie that I like / caters to the tastes that seem popular here), it's likely there's a good 4K version. So i guess my big question would actually be, what movie that a movie collector might want to have in his library had a bad enough or mediocre enough 4K edition that you might as well stay with your old Blu-ray? Because I've now replaced a lot of my titles twice, once from VHS to dvd and then from dvd to Blu-ray....

    • @TheOriginalFuzz
      @TheOriginalFuzz  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yeah generally speaking, between the higher resolution, the HDR and wider color gamut, 4K usually looks better than blu ray for most films... it's just a matter of to what degree. For some titles, the difference is substantial, but for others, the improvement might be more minimal. It's really on a case-by-case basis. But overall, yes, 4K is usually better for most titles. I think some of the most commonly cited "worst" 4K titles (as of right now) are Terminator 2, Pirates of the Caribbean, Goodfellas, and Planes Trains and Automobiles. I would also add The Core to that list... I think the blu ray is probably better. Also, the Jason Bourne movies are only a modest improvement (may be negligible depending on the individual). I've also heard the Olympus Has Fallen movies didn't turn out too great on 4K, but I've not seen these myself. But your own mileage may vary on any of these. Everyone's eyes are different. Hope this helps a bit. Thanks for watching!

    The Ten Commandments should have been here. Great video.

      I do like Ten Commandments. Classic! You can never go wrong with a little Charlton! I still need to pick up the 4K -- haven't seen it yet, but I hear it is fantastic. That said, the film is outside of the genres I usually discuss on this channel (I mostly focus on horror, sci-fi and action films here). Thanks for watching!

    What’s your TV and player set up if you don’t mind me asking? Are you using a TV or projector? Which one?

      I have a fairly modest setup -- nothing too high end. I have a Samsung 75-inch 4K TV (I can't remember the model number... I think it's a mid-range model that's about 5 years old. But I am considering maybe upgrading to a projector at some point down the line). I have several 4k players, but my Panasonic UB820 is my primary unit. I also have a multi-region-modded Sony X700 that has been a very solid player for me as well. Thanks for watching!

    If you get any stuttering while playing back Gemini Man, the solution might be that you have to upgrade your HDMI cables to a higher specification, as it is one of a VERY few 4K movies shot in a nonstandard frame rate, this being 60fps.

      Never had any problems with mine on my system, but yeah, I do have high-speed/high-capacity cables. Personally, I like the high frame rate in this movie, but I know not everyone does. Technically, it was shot at 120 fps (and I think that's the frame rate they exhibited the film at in 3D when it first came out -- I would've loved to have seen that, in retrospect). So we got a bit of a "downgrade" for the 4K release at 60 fps (although given the complaints I've read/heard about the 60 fps presentation, I'm guessing those same people would really hate seeing the full meal deal at 120. Lol.). Thanks for watching!

    The reason Nolan’s films change aspect ratios is because some shots were made with imax cameras and some with standard cameras. IMAX cameras are loud as hell so they can only be used for non dialogue focused scenes so they don’t distract the actors.

    Awesome video. Thanks for putting in the time and effort to record and edit this. I most definitely want to order the fifth element, but I wanted to double-check that i was ordering the correct one. The one you put a link to in your description looks a bit different than the one your holding in your video and as you said it does have a note that it is a (b/2) region. I'm still getting to learn and understand the whole region restrictions thing. I have a Sony uhb700 ( if im remembering correctly). i could have the "uhb" part wrong. Will that play this 4k disk. I bought the 4k player in Indiana, but i dont know for sure if it has limitations on what disc it will play. Thanks for any help.

      Thanks for watching and chiming in! Most 4K discs are region free (like 99 percent). The region coding usually only applies to a blu-ray disc that's included, but not the 4K disc. The link in the video description here for The Fifth Element is the same version I showed in the video (it has the same artwork)... it may not come with a slipcover anymore, but it's the Studiocanal release, which is what you want for this movie on 4K. I also have a Sony X700 4K player, and it's been a very solid player for me, so yes, this title will play on that player.
      Here's another video I made with a little more info about region coding with 4K discs: th-cam.com/video/sKA70K79IfQ/w-d-xo.html
      Also, here are a couple recommended settings for your Sony X700 player for best performance: th-cam.com/video/Sym8ayOpL-4/w-d-xo.html

    Top gun maverick also has shifting aspect ratios I only noticed it on my third viewing. 😂 also a great 4K bluray movie.
