In fact despite covid and other nasty events making 2020 about the worst year I can remember, it seems to have been an extraordinarily generous one for physical media releases. We've been absolutely spoilt this year with contenders for best release of 2020 but yes this is surely up there with the best of them! This and that lovely Arrow Gamera set are my two picks and maybe to round out a top 3 perhaps throw in the Criterion Varda set. But there are many others I could easily throw into my top 3 instead that would be equally as worthy!

One of my favourite films. I absolutely adore the way the characters just adapt to life in the mall. This is a comfort watch for me, weirdly. Can’t wait to watch this in 4K.

This box set is perfect. All the cuts are here they all ate pristine and actually look better than they did back in 78' and then in April 79' when it was released in the U.S.
Hopefully, Second Sight can do something similar with Day of the Dead (my personal favorite). Criterion took care of Night of the Living Dead. The last part of the trilogy remains now.

Saw Dawn in '79 as a second feature to Phantasm in a mall theater of all places. I've been waiting forever for a home video release worthy of this movie.
It's funny, the first DVD I ever bought was Dawn. The first Blu-ray I ever bought was Dawn. It's only fitting, the first 4K UHD I order is Dawn, and remains the best zombie film ever made. My order is on the way but I can't watch the 4k discs until I get my PS5 lol.

You don’t buy it for the single disk it’s for a collector die hard fans. The art the box and extras way worth it. But yes I understand what you mean. I picked it up at Amazon $87 shipping pre ordered.
I really hope that they release a basic/affordable version of the 4K! Since the Blu Ray is long out of print, I was so excited when I heard about this because it would make the film actually available again, but then I saw the price and it made me sad because it's so expensive so it doesn't really make it widely available at that high a price tag :(

I think the Zombie version on the third disc is what I know best, being French. Its an interesting thing having access to three quite different movies. To me Zombie has excellent pace and I have yet to discover the other versions.

Since I live in Canada this will be unavailable as per usual but I still have my memories, Saw this in the theatre way back in the spring of 1979, great experience, also saw Cronenbergs The Brood at the Drive- In backed with Beyond The Door 2 (Shock) that summer!
Just got this and totally agree. Everybody seems to love this release but I actually hate it. I’ve never seen a 70’s movie that has this blue tint to it. It always had a warm color grading and this just looks murky, dark and blue. Ended up watching my Anchor Bay edition because even though it has some DNR at least looks like I’ve always remembered it.
Good to see! My preorder from 6'ish months ago via base.com was cancelled at some point... and I was all excited to get it by the end of october. Well.. I guess I'll have to order again

Hi again, Elliot! I checked part that TH-cam version and this is what i found out about the picture quality of the movie. It is 4K, but it is not in HDR mode - it is is in SDR ( limited color palette compared to HDR found in 4K UHD disks) and also it shows heavy pixelation depending of scene - especially in night helicopter and outside night sky scenes. Also it has treated with picture noice reduction to reduce picture grain ( 35 mm film was used ) and colors were at times oversaturated. And about Dawn of the Dead Argento version - it is in 4K, but has SDR color palette. In some scenes for example white shirt is not so white in colour. Could this version be that Italian version, that was released couple of years ago? Still these Second Sight disks of "Dawn" ...look very good - i guess best they have ever looked ! And of course the extras in blu-ray disk are great!! Thanks to you Elliot for your help for movie enthusiasts about the info you give us - Thank You !!
Had the old DVD set by anchor bay and loved it but I sold it thinking eventually someone would do a similar set on blu ray. Even though this is one of my favorites, it’s been years since I’ve watched this movie because of that reason and so I am so pleased to finally get an updated version of that quality release. Glad I didn’t cave in and buy any of the other releases.
Hello. I did not receive the standard blu-ray, so I cannot make a direct comparison unfortunately, though I would imagine there's a substantial difference in picture quality!
I bought the 4k set, but I'm a bit disappointed that there's only a wide-screen option. I've watched the original aspect ratio director's cut dvd for years, and really wanted a 4k version of that. Or am I missing a hidden feature in the set?

I'm not really interested in the soundtracks or the books. On amazon it says that they are the only limited edition contents. Are you able to find out if there's going to be another edition without these limited edition contents, but with the special features and all three cuts of the film? £79 is too expensive for me really.
Shame there’s no Dolby atmos, Suspiria managed it - I’m sure there’s a reason behind it though. I’m on the fence still, just a huge cost for what is ultimately a single film... albeit various cuts and supplementary material.

@@KirkRedgate why not just buy a multi region blu Ray player, simple?. I’ve had one for over 3yrs now and I also live in the uk and have loads of scream factory releases from the US 90% with slipcovers plus many more US region 1 collectors editions on blu Ray.

I bought the Japanese extended cut of blu ray as when i bought the arrow set it was only the theatrical cut that is in 1080p which was a waste of time for me as my version of the film is the extended cut. So i was pleased with the one i bought from Japan as you say this has multi channel audio. So although i am getting this set that is a major disappointment already that although i will be able to see my prefered version of the film in 4k hdr. I am going to have crappy mono. You see yes it is old film. But for example the part where flyboy fires at the security gaurd zombie you can hear the bullets rickocheting all over the place it sounds great. So i won't be able to hear that on mono soundtrack. I agree that people are entitled to like what they like even if it differs from my own likes. But i totally don't understand why anyone who is into home cinema is happy with mono sound. It's not exactly cinematic having sound only coming from the centre speaker. How can that be good? Thanks for review though makes me look forward to this even more albeit that mono sound issue. As you say it is a bit baffling why they did not include it. For me it's almost devastating. Not as devastating as when i bought the arrow release and realised although it is a 3 disc set only the first disc is a blu ray. The other two versions are on dvds so no hd video. But at least on the arrow set the extended cut was in stereo not mono. But video quality was dvd quality. Seems i am destined not have my favourite version with all the bells and whistles unless someone creates a remux. No idea how to do that myself. If i did i would remux the audio from that jap blu ray onto the file from the extended cut on this set. But i shouldn't need to do that besides i have no idea how. But frustrating as all those years ago atrow set was a waste of money. Now i still can't see and hear the best version the way i want. Imo if i love something i want it to be as long as possible. Besides with dawn of the dead one thing that makes this film so great to me is the characters. They are superb and the extended cut makes you feel like you lived with those characters and it just makes it a great experience overall.
Amazing package and great review. Only my favorite movies will get me to pay $75. That said, I’d love to have this, even though I don’t really know the movie. How I’d love this package for Night of the Demon, for example.
There's also an 'Ultimate Cut' running 156 min. It was made by German fans taking all available scenes and stuffing them into one movie. It's only available in German and as you might already guessed, a mess.
Can't wait for my UK preordered UHD Set, saw it last saturday the Argento 4k transfer at my local Munich Theater, so theTheaterical Argento Cut is not 4K crispi sharp (DNR!?) only the other two Cuts that suckes, greetings from Germany
Greetings, Jim! There may be some DNR on the Argento cut, but I think it's more down to the transfer of the materials being different rather than smoothing effects added later. I hope all is well in Germany, my friend :)
I'm really curious if the book has some new info about the movie...I have "The Zombies That Ate Pittsburgh" book and that's kinda detailed. Same for the discs , i own a special edition double VHS , a laserdisc box set and different editions on DVD and VHS and document of the dead .

But by the way someone has put Dawn Of The Dead to youtube as a 4K version - the Theatrical version..... i checked parts of it, but not all of it. Because i want to have the official Second Sight release with all versions and music tracks and books - and of course the blu-ray extras!!! ( Do you know about how many of David Lynch movies are released as 4K UHD versions? ) I have just started to collect movies as 4K versions ..... and does the Dawn Of ..Argento cut have HDR10 - or HDR10+ at all? The extras seem not to mention that at all...? ( So this Argento cut is prepared for 4K just recently - earlier Italian version "Zombi" was 4K, but did not have HDR of any kind - this info came also from one youtube rewiever...). Keep doing these videos - they are just so good!!! And for your info - today i bought the Second Sight´s 4K UHD version of "Dawn of the Dead" - i want to honor master of Zombies - Mr. Romero, by buying and watching this his movies in 4K - great box set!! I've had this pre-ordered for what seems like forever! It would have been perfect to watch on Halloween, but there was a delay :-( Still, November 16th isn't too far away. The extended cut is still the one and only way I like this film. Had it on vhs for over 20 years.

What region free player are you using in the US?
My player is a modified Oppo UDP 203
It's already virtually unavailable in the US. The copies that I've seen for sale are averaging around $200 US. Very disappointing.

4K UHD Blu-rays are never region locked, so you'll be able to play the 4K discs wherever you are in the world!

I'm not really interested in the soundtracks or the books. On amazon it says that they are the only limited edition contents. Are you able to find out if there's going to be another edition without these limited edition contents, but with the special features and all three cuts of the film? £79 is too expensive for me really.
I asked them yesterday and they said:
Yes, we'll be releasing a slightly more standard version early in the new year and will include all cuts.

Great boxset release, but they should have another disc version of dawn of the dead extended mall hour that's 2hrs 34mins.
Shame there’s no Dolby atmos, Suspiria managed it - I’m sure there’s a reason behind it though. I’m on the fence still, just a huge cost for what is ultimately a single film... albeit various cuts and supplementary material.

@@KirkRedgate why not just buy a multi region blu Ray player, simple?. I’ve had one for over 3yrs now and I also live in the uk and have loads of scream factory releases from the US 90% with slipcovers plus many more US region 1 collectors editions on blu Ray.

I want this so bad but I live in the USA and they don't ship it here. I'm sure I can find a DVD or older version but this version looks amazing.
really nice box set, definetely on the pricey side, wish they so a one-disc edition for people who just want one cut of the film...By the way, could you do a collection video on all your regular blu rays? (non boutique ones)
I bought the Japanese extended cut of blu ray as when i bought the arrow set it was only the theatrical cut that is in 1080p which was a waste of time for me as my version of the film is the extended cut. So i was pleased with the one i bought from Japan as you say this has multi channel audio. So although i am getting this set that is a major disappointment already that although i will be able to see my prefered version of the film in 4k hdr. I am going to have crappy mono. You see yes it is old film. But for example the part where flyboy fires at the security gaurd zombie you can hear the bullets rickocheting all over the place it sounds great. So i won't be able to hear that on mono soundtrack. I agree that people are entitled to like what they like even if it differs from my own likes. But i totally don't understand why anyone who is into home cinema is happy with mono sound. It's not exactly cinematic having sound only coming from the centre speaker. How can that be good? Thanks for review though makes me look forward to this even more albeit that mono sound issue. As you say it is a bit baffling why they did not include it. For me it's almost devastating. Not as devastating as when i bought the arrow release and realised although it is a 3 disc set only the first disc is a blu ray. The other two versions are on dvds so no hd video. But at least on the arrow set the extended cut was in stereo not mono. But video quality was dvd quality. Seems i am destined not have my favourite version with all the bells and whistles unless someone creates a remux. No idea how to do that myself. If i did i would remux the audio from that jap blu ray onto the file from the extended cut on this set. But i shouldn't need to do that besides i have no idea how. But frustrating as all those years ago atrow set was a waste of money. Now i still can't see and hear the best version the way i want. Imo if i love something i want it to be as long as possible. Besides with dawn of the dead one thing that makes this film so great to me is the characters. They are superb and the extended cut makes you feel like you lived with those characters and it just makes it a great experience overall.
Amazing package and great review. Only my favorite movies will get me to pay $75. That said, I’d love to have this, even though I don’t really know the movie. How I’d love this package for Night of the Demon, for example.
There's also an 'Ultimate Cut' running 156 min. It was made by German fans taking all available scenes and stuffing them into one movie. It's only available in German and as you might already guessed, a mess.

Can't wait for my UK preordered UHD Set, saw it last saturday the Argento 4k transfer at my local Munich Theater, so theTheaterical Argento Cut is not 4K crispi sharp (DNR!?) only the other two Cuts that suckes, greetings from Germany
Greetings, Jim! There may be some DNR on the Argento cut, but I think it's more down to the transfer of the materials being different rather than smoothing effects added later. I hope all is well in Germany, my friend :)

It's only being released in the UK but the 4K discs are not region locked, so you'll be able to play them in the US.
Amazon UK sells it for $87.00 pre order you can play 4K disks in the USA 🇺🇸 Just placed my order.

I'm really curious if the book has some new info about the movie...I have "The Zombies That Ate Pittsburgh" book and that's kinda detailed. Same for the discs , i own a special edition double VHS , a laserdisc box set and different editions on DVD and VHS and document of the dead .

Greetings from Finland, Elliot! I´m too waiting for the Dawn Of The Dead box set release - maybe in coming weekend or next week. But by the way someone has put Dawn Of The Dead to youtube as a 4K version - the Theatrical version..... i checked parts of it, but not all of it. Because i want to have the official Second Sight release with all versions and music tracks and books - and of course the blu-ray extras!!! ( Do you know about how many of David Lynch movies are released as 4K UHD versions? ) I have just started to collect movies as 4K versions ..... and does the Dawn Of ..Argento cut have HDR10 - or HDR10+ at all? The extras seem not to mention that at all...? ( So this Argento cut is prepared for 4K just recently - earlier Italian version "Zombi" was 4K, but did not have HDR of any kind - this info came also from one youtube rewiever...).

And for your info - today i bought the Second Sight´s 4K UHD version of "Dawn of the Dead" - i want to honor master of Zombies - Mr. Romero, by buying and watching this his movies in 4K - great box set!! Truly fantastic work from both film makers and Second Sight !!!

Hello. Not that I'm aware of. Those Amazon review date back a few years and are for an older release, the German 3D release I believe. I hope that helps :)

I've had this pre-ordered for what seems like forever! It would have been perfect to watch on Halloween, but there was a delay :-( Still, November 16th isn't too far away. As some other comments have stated, I also hope they bring out a definitive Day of the Dead release. We have the Criterion NotLD and now this... it would make sense?
