- Here we are! The War that started them all! The third Heat of the first ever War. Jeremy Clarkson presents, Johnathon Pearce commentates and Philippa Forrester interviews the teams. The six combatants are Robot the Bruce, Wedgehog, Dreadnaught, Cruella, WYSIWYG and Plunderbird.
LET THE WARS BEGIN!

WYSIWYG was actually an RC-car in a box that the producers used to fill out an empty slot. It wasn't supposed to do much
FROM EDDINGTON - DREADNOUGHT!
"weeeeee-OOF!"
It's Nuneaton, somewhere near the midlands
Stinger: Tornado is a box on wheels!
Tornado: *Holds up a picture of Robot The Bruce*
Stinger: Touché.
You've got to admire Plunderbird's team spirit. Always defeated but never discouraged!
Who would have thought that Martin Smith from the Cruella team would later become a judge on Robot Wars?
He was great with Noel Sharkey on Techno Games as well.
only saw this from series 2, this series is completely new to me. its AWESOME!!!
Loved Dreadnaught's design. Such an eyecatching robot, even if it WAS useless in the competition.
Met the Plunderbird team at a Robot Wars event once when I was a lad. Real nice bunch of guys and they made some great looking bots.
"Recyclopse incontroversially eliminated all oposition"
In the meantime we see Recyclopse being smashed into a wall by Mortis.
How could WYSIWYG had made up more ground then Plunderbird in the Gauntlet. It only made 5.55 metres by going sideways not forward, plus Shunt should've left it alone beached on the ramp and wait for the time to run out thus saving Plunderbird's bacon.
I don’t know if there’s a solid rule book for this, but I was thinking the same in the previous heat, about Detonator. I think going to the right, they enter the maze, and distance starts counting there, or something? Since the maze is a manoeuvrability challenge, the distance counts, but it’s hard to complete it. Things were very primitive in the first series.
Woo, go Robot the Bruce! George Francis makes his Robot Wars debut!
Damn Plunderbird are amusing, right from the start. Plus this was I think one of only 2 was where their robot was actually a meaningful competitor rather than a joke entry.
Yep, I wish WYSIWYG had gone out in the first round (it was a stock robot after all) so we could have seen more of them
+CaruCath97 TBH, unlike the other stock robots, it didn't look like WYSIWYG was trying to get through. She just went a bit too far.
Shunt's axe was rubbish in series 1. No power or force behind it. Barely makes a dent.
FinlayLavery303 it’s a pain and steel axe and strong
those plunderbird guys are classic!
6:17 the guy on the left looks like Beto O'Rourke and on the right is Dwight Schrute
Nice to know that I'm not the only one who noticed. Also, WYSIWIG's driver looks like Amy from The Big Bang Theory. XD
THERES A PLUNTER STORM COMEN
aaa the plunderbird squad has to be a plant, no one can be that goofy. love the "laser guided" battering ram.
I love Dreadnaut! They never get 'nought' :D
I never realised that Martin Smith competed. He was a judge in most of the other series.
1:19 LMAO, Cruella immobilises itself on a grille again...talk about foreshadowing.
@BBCRobotwarsUK It's a shame that they didn't enter Series 7; if they did, then George Francis' team(s) would be THE only ever ever-present team on Robot Wars.
2:35 So Dreadnaut's engine was salvaged from a Morris Marina....I Wonder what Jeremy Clarkson would have said about that.
I just don't understand why the Stock Robots were allowed to complete the Gauntlet before throwing the competition, what was the point of making a legitimate competitor lose out, just to go out anyway? If WYSIWYG went out in the Gauntlet, just imagine what Plunderbird 1 could have done. If it was anything like Plunderbird 2 it would have taken the Heat by storm. Those interchangable weapons would have been interesting to see.
9:58 You can clearly see where WYSIWYG stopped in comparison to the pyramid and grille Plunderbird got stuck against, which is at least a couple of metres further on. How the hell did WYSIWYG go through?
I’m not sure, but compared to other questionable results it seems robots that go through the left side seem to get distance marked for going to the side and not just down. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if she was actively trying to lose so Plunderbird could get past. She didn’t make that “robot” it was made by the show and was one of like 3-4 RC bots to fill out the roster. They were always designated to lose.
I’ve seen others suggest it’s not just distance forward that gets taken into account, but also sideways in the event of taking on the maze or house robots. So by virtue of going to the maze they end up travelling further than someone who goes straight on and getting stuck straight away. It’s not clear though.
I was half expecting to see a piano drop on to dreadnaught!
Oh man, Plunderbird 1 surely looked more potent than that WYSIWYG thing. I'd love to see it fighting.
+TheStrongestBaka Not to mention she said it is made of wood so even if she gets to the fighting WYSIWYG will get lit on fire easily and could easily be cut to pieces by a saw.
Dead Metal is awesome.
@BBCRobotwarsUK
I met him when when i was younger, as he was a friend of my dad. I was trying to remember what bot he had.
Now starting season 2 ... the graphics are making me feel old.
Dreadnaut ALWAYS used to catch fire.
That guy on the Cruella team looks like Nigel Farage...
Martin Smith? He was later a judge on the show!
a future judge in the cruella team
I see the first Series the first time and it was a good desicion to cut the Road part of this. It's a bit unfair to lose because the start force you to go left to the House Robots even if you want to use the Ramp.
@ 6:17, Jonathan Pearce definitely calls Dreadnaut "Dreadlock" pmsl xD
And get them next time the Plunderbird boys did!
Dreadnaught on fire? Must have been those Morris Marina motors.
So when does the piano drop onto Dreadnaut?
I'd love to see Robot Wars back on tv
You Are In Luck!
Ha, great entrance by cruella, speeds straight in and gets jammed on the grill just as fast.
Plunderbird looks allot like an Ultramarine..
indeed
Dreadnought gave quite a dramafest with their engine problems that could've forced them to retire after a great gauntlet run, Plunderbird 1 flopped hard but who knew the team would be back for 4 more series? "You managed to go the wrong way but nevertheless some way" xD
@DirtyDay123 Personally, I see his reply to Jeremy in response to his teammate's driving as an excellent case of being hilarious in hindsight, given that he showed that he was level-headed and capable of being a fair judge even as a roboteer.
Dreadnaut's Engine was Salvaged from a Morris Marina...I wonder what Jeremy Clarkson would've said about that
@BBCRobotwarsUK ah, k, thanks for telling me that
A young, British Dwight Schrute.
I bet phillipa has good manueverability.
One time house robots blocks the way, the other time helps somebody to go through... thats stupid
@KenzoSnizzle The reason Pussycat didn't appear in Series 6 was due to David Gribble (the driver) being killed in a car accidentbefore the series started.
why the frig did they put the grills in the beginning intro bit...most of the robots got caught...
@BBCRobotwarsUK didn't he also have Ramrombit in series 2?
and we have yet to see the morris marina club complain :P
@BBCRobotwarsUK Actually, the Pussycat team did not appear in Series 6 for some reason. :( They reached the second stage of the series semi-finals in Series 5 so they could've been seeded 6 the following wars.
That's because David Gribble, the driver of Pussycat sadly passed away in a motorbike accident, so they did not compete.
Did geroge francis (of robot the bruce) have another robot later on?
WYSIWYG - Nothing!
0:16 yeah.. eliminated.. XD
@BBCRobotwarsUK They missed series 6 due to David Gribble's death due to a road accident.
A wooden robot? That's just asking for trouble.
@Natendowii hmm, if they had a drop zone then it would have been a piano
@KenzoSnizzle
The driver David Gribble died during the year it occured, so they chose not to go on.
@spongebot64 they're called grills, :) just helping
1:23 hahaha.
Dreadnaught did so well in the first round, then it all went downhill... sad...
WYSIWYG! Nooo!
the wooden robot did not go well...
The fuck's regenerative brakes?
small robot big woman NICE
Its not really fair to have 20 kg robots and 90 kg robots vs 100 home bots
Cool Dude Well, in all fairness that is why there are 3 paths to choose from. The bigger bots can take on the home bots, the bots with clearance can take the bridges, and the smaller quicker bots can go through the maze if the driver is competent. If they can't maneuver through the maze, that's their own fault. It all goes down to skill and making the right choices to showcase the strengths of the bot.
Pah
Women drivers
Have any of the women drivers done well? haha
