Here we are! The War that started them all! The first ever Heat of the first ever War. Jeremy Clarkson presents, Johnathon Pearce commentates and Philippa Forrester interviews the teams.
Poor Barry really got cheated over Grunt's expense. Quite an impressive design for series 1 standards Barry may have been considered a dark horse for the tournament, he would definitely owned Shunt in the Sumo trial and also could have given Roadblock a few worries if they met head to head in the Arena round.
It's interesting to see the Gauntlet and the Trials, but honestly I'm not sad to see them replaced by pure robot fighting in later wars. They're just too slow and, well, it's not "Robot Wars". The Sumo Basho is TOTALLY different from what I remember in the 4th Wars, though, the ring is about double the size of what it was then, Shunt often facing plow-side on first rather than scoop-side and he doesn't seem to have even a FRACTION of his usual pushing power! Getting pushed out by Roadblock, of the ignominy for a house robot! I like how Nemesis' shape means that it can literally roll with Shunt's shoves just by turning. And then seeing Shunt taken out twice in a row? Man, these early house robots really were pants weren't they? 'course, Grunt never had a chance. Only weighed 45kg, Shunt would have rolled right over the top of it.
Regarding to the controversy between Barry and Grunt. If I was in Matthew Dickinson's shoes I would allow Grunt to finish the Gauntlet as normal. Later I'd come up with an excuse like there was a technical glitch going on with the robot's electronics and could not be fixed in time for the Trial. So the producers will have no option but to let Barry take Grunt's place in the Sumo event, therefore being given a fair chance to test its mettle.
I know! Awesome news! Not sure anyone could recreate the energy that Craig Charles brought to presenting the show, but will certainly let Dara try before judging!
I was just saying that even though Nemesis was a terrible robot, the team clearly learned from that experience. And as a result, Diotoir was a much better machine.
Agreed. For a supposed joke robot Diotior was actually very underrated as a fighter, along with the Tornado win it reached the heat finals twice and were semi finalists of the first world championships. Andrew Marchant of the Tornado team also said that in his view Diotior was one of the most powerful two wheel drive robots of the series.
If Barry had been allowed through, and Grunt had actually not made it past the Gauntlet (which, as a stock robot, it really shouldn't have done if it was going to throw the match anyway), I strongly suspect Barry would still lose the Sumo. Yes, it has the weight and plough, but....that ground clearance. Power and weight is nothing if your wheels are off the floor.
+Kill Dozer I can see where you're coming from about Barry's ground clearance. It was very much evident in the Gauntlet when Barry's plough got stuck on the low incline (angle) of the ramp, causing the tyres to lose contact from the floor. Though, I doubt the same mistake could happen in the Sumo, both Shunt's scoops have steeper angles thus making him less likely to hinder Barry's progress. I'm sure the team's main goal in the Sumo was to go for the win or hold on for the full minute as an alternative, either way Shogun would be saying goodbye at that stage.
They could've at least made the elimination look vaguely better. Like maybe Shunt pushes him off without resistance. For a keen eyed viewer they'd think something was up. But not 4 year old me.
I don't think you want to tell Shunt what to do Jeremy. He's very much the same as he is on Top Gear isn't he? And Phillipa must have have felt the heat of Bash earlier. And thinking she must have had to look up where everything was in order not to get impailed.
after watching series 3 through 6 presenting tank-proof super-duper armored beasts it's actually pretty entertaining to watch these tiny machinies with baby-house robots :-D
Plus it also won the Tag Team Terror Championship with Pussycat in Extreme. That, plus all the other achievements you mentioned, make Diotoir a worthy All-Star calibre bot.
Nemesis was my absolute favorite! Sweet looking and entertaining, what a robot(it'd transform to Diotoir) kicked ass in the gauntlet and trial. Philippa - "Are we allowed to see your robot with no clothes on?" xD Grunt had potential but flopped in the sumo, Killertron did fantastic to stay in for a whole minute. "Everyone's killing my mate, I hate you I hate you for that!" Jeremy sticking up for Shunt here.
@MultiBattleaxe actualy Diotor and Nemesis may look alike but their weapons are quite different and ofc Diotor actualy had a knack of being set a lite more than Diotor's counterpart that is Nemesis
@MultiBattleaxe well in this it does but in later series Shunt's axe is formiddable, All the house robots underwent weapon modifications though because the producers didn't feel as though they had enough power for the first few series. E.G. Bash had his claws upgraded and the useless blade on his rear became for show, Shunt's axe made more powerful, Matilda replacing that rubbish chainsaw with the Flywheel, Dead Metal having a much more powerful cutter with greater RPM.
"now I've seen sumo wrestling before and its just basically two fat blokes in pants leaning on each other. now robot sumo is different because robots don't wear pants" XD
> Barry traveled the least distance (blocked by house robots) > Barry is eliminated > !sexism Do you mean to imply that a robot with a male driver of equal skill would have been allowed to continue after getting last place? That might well be true; if so, I apologize for my ignorance of the show's history.
Awww I was hoping Nemesis to catch fire from Sgt. Bash. I guess it was Diótoir that started that trend, eh? ;) I don't think Jeremy was as good at presenting as Craig; He just seemed a little too "Top Gear" for me.
"You blithering idiot!" XD I love the honesty. He doesn't hold back.
Nemesis in series 1: We don't want to go on fire
Nemesis/Diotoir in every other series:
ohhhhhhh i thought i recognised nemesis from diotoir
@@theolodger well Diotoir’s true name is in fact: Diotoir: son of nemesis
@@landrylongacre6391 cool. did not know.
I actually really like Jeremy Clarkson's presenting style here. Very chilled-out and fun.
this is the best show to ever hit television
Phillippa was a natural at her job from the start.
I'm transported back to the mid 90s glued to to the tv 6pm
Poor Barry really got cheated over Grunt's expense. 'course, Grunt never had a chance. Only weighed 45kg, Shunt would have rolled right over the top of it.
Diotoir's run in that S4 sumo competition compared to this just shows how much Shunt wasn't even trying here.
Regarding to the controversy between Barry and Grunt. If I was in Matthew Dickinson's shoes I would allow Grunt to finish the Gauntlet as normal. AND DEATH BY GLORY!! That line and roadblock being the first robot brought out are the two things I always remembered from when this first aired.
JP always seemed to be having a blast commentating on this! Loved this show, wish it came back!
You're in luck. It IS coming back. It's being hosted by Dara O'Briain and Angela Scanlon and JP is on commentary.
I know! Awesome news! Not sure anyone could recreate the energy that Craig Charles brought to presenting the show, but will certainly let Dara try before judging!
Jay Moore Same here.
Here from Chris Broads livestream
8:06-8:15 That's why you don't ignore road signs, Shunt.
Love the Killertron team's introduction :)
I love Killatron's run. He's doing so well until he suddenly fancies a punch-up. Legend!
the nostalgia is trong
"Red fur, surely vulnerable to flame!"- epic foreshadowing from JP!
I was just saying that even though Nemesis was a terrible robot, the team clearly learned from that experience. And as a result, Diotoir was a much better machine.

Thanks for this
Still its successor Diotoir was AWESOME, Nemesis was not near to be a bad robot
i cant be the only one that wanted shunt to attack clarkson
Yes alright, we're very impressed. Stop it! Sit still! Thank you. LOL
i always used to think it said, "robot ears, standby" lol

To me Grunt basically looks like a half sunken aircraft carrier .
lmao you have a point
They could've at least made the elimination look vaguely better. Like maybe Shunt pushes him off without resistance. For a keen eyed viewer they'd think something was up. But not 4 year old me.
BBC, please bring this series back, with today's technology this will be sooooo cool!
Syphr54 it was brought back last year
Two most difficult people to interview people on robot wars and people from Scotland.
"You blithering idiot!" I knew that would happen eventually with the big JC.
a tin can? well i better make a robot called 'can-opener'
"and i'm in the middle, bye! LOL
I don't think you want to tell Shunt what to do Jeremy. He's very much the same as he is on Top Gear isn't he? And Phillipa must have have felt the heat of Bash earlier. And thinking she must have had to look up where everything was in order not to get impailed.
Vlad The Impeler Was Is American Robot Wars Circuit In The 1990's And On The Battlebots Circuit (1999-2001)
"I thought he was going to destroy us", so cute.
It's teams like Nemesis that made Robot Wars for me.
Crazy to think there was no protective barrier for the roboteirs
after watching series 3 through 6 presenting tank-proof super-duper armored beasts it's actually pretty entertaining to watch these tiny machinies with baby-house robots :-D
Plus it also won the Tag Team Terror Championship with Pussycat in Extreme. That, plus all the other achievements you mentioned, make Diotoir a worthy All-Star calibre bot.
Fortunately for the entertainment of the spectators, we do get to see Nemesis catch on fire eventually.
Grunt was a stock robot meaning it couldn't get past the trial.
"You won't beat bedsprings with a pickaxe boys what are you doing!?"
" You can't beat springs with a pickaxe!" No - But they can frickin try!!!
5:51 It sure does looks like he’s blowing him a raspberry (pfft hahahaha!)
These were the days
I guess it is quite good. Not many robots have beaten Tornado!
Diotoir vs Dantomkia best fight ever
No, Uglybot was a 'real' competitor. The 3 stock robots were Grunt, WYSIWYG and The Mouse.
@7Lightening its the same team Nemesis is the earlier version of the Red and Black one we all know and love
10:04 Grunt was actually entered by the series producers to "make up the numbers" - the driver thus drove off on purpose.
@MultiBattleaxe actualy Diotor and Nemesis may look alike but their weapons are quite different and ofc Diotor actualy had a knack of being set a lite more than Diotor's counterpart that is Nemesis
@BBCRobotwarsUK do u have a dvd of robot wars?, where did u get it, ive been look all over for it!
2:01 ABROAD IN JAPAN'S DAD!! WOOO!!!
I was saying that Diotoir must have had some fighting potential, since it managed to beat Tornado in series 5.
You're missing the point. Nemesis and it's successor Diotoir weren't built to win, they were built to ENTERTAIN.
Hey! It’s Chris Broad’s dad!
2:03 driver Richard Broad
1.Nemesis Completed
2.Grunt Completed
3.Roadblock Completed
4.Killertron 11.02 meters
5.Shogun 10.71 meters
6.Barry 2.93 meters
@ 10:29 another sign of a team going home and out of the competition
@ 9:25 and the crowd or at least in the pit area goes wild
@Street90Killer
Chaos 2 was in series 3-6 and both extremes I think.
especially given that grunt was actually a dummy robot that was supposed to be disallowed from going through.
@MultiBattleaxe well in this it does but in later series Shunt's axe is formiddable, All the house robots underwent weapon modifications though because the producers didn't feel as though they had enough power for the first few series. SUUUUUUUUUUUUMOOOOOO
Wow. 13 years later, and I am drunk and watching this shit! I am 67 y/o, by the way...
"now I've seen sumo wrestling before and its just basically two fat blokes in pants leaning on each other. now robot sumo is different because robots don't wear pants" XD
One of the reasons it looked so impressive was because it weighed 120 Kg, about 40 Kg more than most robots.
@panickattack100 probbly cuz Grunt's driver was too blinded by shunt's intimidation XD
has anyone else noticed theres someone in the crowd point a laser pointer at peoples faces in this and last episode
+ph1shzilla Its not a laser pointer, Its the tip of the aerial from the transmitter :)
> Barry traveled the least distance (blocked by house robots)
> Barry is eliminated
> !sexism
Do you mean to imply that a robot with a male driver of equal skill would have been allowed to continue after getting last place? That might well be true; if so, I apologize for my ignorance of the show's history.
Nemesis is a flammable robot flammable robots were mean’t to get on 🔥 in round 1 so Nemesis was on top of Road block when he is on 🔥
@ 9.24 meanwhile back at the pits.
What the hell is Jeremy Clarkson doing on Robot Wars?
so this is what clarkson did before top gear..... go on shunty! drive that axe into clarkson!
-Tornado
-Steel Avenger
-Wild Thing
-Gemini
-101
I feel like the grossly overestimated the capabilities of their house robots
Diotoir was one of the very few robots which managed to beat Tornado. I'd hardly call that 'sucks ass'.
Even though Diotoir is such a magnificent robot, really.
Is hipno-disc in this series? He the best i 've seen
Nemesis is Diotoir.
Does it strike anyone else that Grunt wouldn't actually stand a chance against other robots, seeing as it has no weapons?
It appears to be a wedge, but there's stuff in the way of the actual wedge for it to be effective.
Nemesis!!! :D
Nemesis everybody...... The Father Of the superior Diotoir
Barry came in series 3 with Sonic.
@usuck902 Killalot appears from Series 2 onwards.
Where did Tornado came into this?
Bit mean to Grunt, isn't it? Was rooting for him.
is that Jeremy from TOP GEAR?
I remember there was an american version of this, didn't they have a Knight themed robot?
that's the last thing the diotor team will ever win :(
Nemesis is pretty much Diotoir's older brother
He's his son. Diotoir's full name is in fact Diotoir, Son of Nemesis.
What happened was....
Ah, completely forgot that x)
LOL XD blowing a raspberry from shogun to shunt? XD HAH wats next?
9:17
i cant believe Diotoir actually ended up fighting Nemesis in series 3
They won the tag team fighting with diotior and pussycat as a teammate
It is Terror Australis instead of Nemesis.
where is sirkillalot his the best house robot
Awww I was hoping Nemesis to catch fire from Sgt. Bash. I guess it was Diótoir that started that trend, eh? ;)
I don't think Jeremy was as good at presenting as Craig; He just seemed a little too "Top Gear" for me.
@Murdock129 I'm sorry what? Why is it not legitimate? Because it doesn't have an active weapon? Come on!
1 dislike. Must be the driver of Shunt.
Really, grunt?
Kitty Grunt was a stock robot made to fill in numbers. Stock robots werent allowed to make it past round one, so grunt purposely drove off the edge
They could have made it look less blatant though!
@ 10:29 c'mon don't let the wife and kids watch this
