- Here we are! The War that started them all! The second Heat of the first ever War. Jeremy Clarkson presents, Johnathon Pearce commentates and Philippa Forrester interviews the teams. The six combatants are Recyclopse, Mortis, Scrapper, Leighbot, Detonator and Uglybot.

Ruan De Santis You can see why he was replaced by Craig though. He lacks the enthusiasm and gumption that Lister brought to it all.
+MarkOfTzeentch Dominik Diamond was actually meant to be presenting Robot Wars until they decided on Clarkston at the last minute. Reckon Dominik would have made a great presenter.

First episode I ever watched. I watched it thinking I'd poke fun at it forever. Watched all 7 seasons. Missed one episode in all that time.

Robot Wars was what Friday nights were all about! The First wars will always hold a place in my heart, so much glorious childhood memories. Jeremy Clarkson was such an unexcited grumpy presenter though lol, Leighbot & Scrapper were good in this heat, Recyclopse had such a lush design, Detonator was a disaster! "Go go go go go!" xD
3:00 for some reason I find that cute. It's like Shunt and Bash are all serious, and Matilda is just screwing around.
And yet in later years Matilda gets fucked up by razor

Wow, Recyclopse actually had a ram IN the tongue! That's such an innovative weapon I can't believe no-one else ever copied it later- rather than try to get an enemy bot to ride up onto your body before deploying the ram built into it, build the ram into a low-lying extendable part instead! Of course, what would we expect from Rex Garrod, the mastermind behind Cassius?

Randomly decided to Wikipedia Robot Wars after watching a few nostalgic matches with Razer, only to find out Clarkson used to host this show. Learn something new everyday

These bots are so primitive compared to later series! I'm blown away by how far the robots have come!

I have this on video but all Jeremy Clarkson scenes are replaced with Craig Charles & My VHS Version doesn't include Scrapper (Shown briefly in 2 or 3 clips) or Uglybot's Gauntlet Runs (Never shown)

It was more of a highlight reel of the first wars/behind the scenes footage
They got a second run at the gauntlet in S2 because the spikes were used when the producers said they wouldn't be

For the wars, we now hand the robots over to our tame roboteer. Some say he drives Razer to the shops for tea every morning, and that he once beat Panic Attack with a piece of paper. All we know is... HE'S CALLED THE STIG.
I did still like it after they reformatted to be all about the VS one on one fighting matches, but I always missed the original format with the obstacle course.

@TheMerrick2009 I think they mean that while it's not the fastest, it has a mixture of speed AND manuverability, rather than just one or the other.

That was Rex Garrod. In season 2 his robot Cassius took on about 3 or 4 house robots at once. No flips, but one went into the pit.

My dt teacher built Leighbot and leighviathan but he never appeared on the team list or on camera

I believe that electric fan Leighbot used was a gimmick made specifically for the Gauntlet. I'm sure all series 1 applicants were given descriptive details of various features in the Gauntlet, Trial and Arena games and so giving them ideas to show off their engineering creativity. Shogun from heat A is another example, particularly in the Sumo trial where it had built in studs to dig into the sumo ring and of course the kissing lips gimmick which was prepared for Shunt should Shogun had won.

I agree what people are saying about the new robots being better but I much prefer these first three series. Probably nostalgia is blinding me, but it's kinda like older people saying football was better 30 years ago or I'm sure in America there are people who say Baseball was better in the 70's or something

cus some people were spending as little as possible and they had a £40,000 robot or something near. they didn't hate them so much as want to beat them to prove they could and show off a bit. plus most people hate the rich kids

It's funny JP describes recyclopse's run as good driving considering Cassius went on to fail in future series due to bad driving.
Well recyclopse was slower, so maybe it was easier to control? that is often the tradeoff for speed

Always hated it when the house robots cheated like they did in the gauntlet here. They were supposed to stay on the one side. By ignoring the rules they caused robots that would have made it through to not make it like scrapper.
It's so unfair that sometimes the house robots are super aggressive and there's no way to win. And then there are the times when the house robots don't do anything.
