lol Def is always the Down fall. Can’t wait till mine starts malfunctioning and stops requiring def I just haven’t hit the right pot holes yet.
So your rolling weight was about 11,000 lbs (includes 5,000 lbs for the truck). It’s pretty amazing for a 183 cu in engine to average 16 mpg (IMO). My ‘23 GMC SIERRA with the LZ0 has average 27.9 mpg over its 13,000 miles (no towing). It also just sips DEF. I have the same BANKS dual IDASH setup as you. I generally monitor the engine load %. If I recall the engine load at 70 mph on flat highway is like 45% at 1600 RPM in 10th gear. I certainly am impressed with this “Baby” Duramax. Thanks for sharing your trip with us you tubers.👍
2023 Silverado & mine sips DEF too, towing too but I hang out around 62 mph & live in florida where it's flat land
I own a 2023 RST Z71 Silverado with the LZ0 and my DEF consumption improved greatly after the first 3-4,000 miles. Regens are much less frequent also. I tow a 3500 lb travel trailer between Commiefornia and Arizona once a month and my DEF consumption does not seem excessive. Oil consumption seems normal also. I get 29 mpg hwy and 16 mpg towing. That is twice as good as the 4.0L gas V6 Frontier I had before and with a lot more HP & torque. I can definitely live with that. The frequent low DEF warnings once range drops to 200 miles are definitely annoying, as is the auto stop start system.
Thanks for the video. I have an AT4 on order with the LZ0 and have been watching all your videos. Some of the most informative videos on the babymax I’ve seen. I also tow a 6000# camper and can’t wait to see how it does and am considering the transmission cooler swap first.
With that being said, does swapping out the charge air cooler and transmission cooler to PPE products void the factory powertrain warranty? Seems like GM could use that as a loophole to not pay for any damages.

Def warnings aren’t a big deal for me, for me it’s the gauge that jumps the last 4 bars in the last 20 miles or so that pisses me off when towing, def usage when towing is high-ish, so I just have an extra jug when road tripping with the trailer, 76 mph is kinda high for a half ton while towing near 6000lbs.
I came into this having 4 prior 3.0's and I knew the warning would happen. For it to pop on in less than 100 miles is a terrible setup, this was frustrating. Anyone out there without knowledge of the system could get even more upset, nobody wants inaccurate warnings popping off. That being said, the drop of 4 bars is also an error on GM's part. we should have a regular gauge... I normally have extra def fluid as well, but forgot it at home. still, with 4.5 gallons total used, that means I still had a gallon in the tank even if I didn't top off.
Thanks for this video. I have a 2023 LZ0 AT4 and the iDash. In your video you show 'DPF RG %' but I can't find this option in the emissions section. I'm running the latest iDash_6288X_05_1_24_0 firmware. Where did you find the DPF RG %? I only show Avg distance between regens in miles and Avg time between regens. I do have the DPF SL. Appreciate any help finding that parameter.

the only time i see the unlock symbol on my idash gear selection is when the display reads 1st gear. any number higher than 1st and it shows locked

Great, transparent, informative video. Thank you. Im waiting for the 2025 Tahoe with the LZ0 and I guess I need to get used to the concept of fill up DEF and Oil and check diesel at fuel stops 😂. Coming from the gas world, I must admit that the mpg pulling a 6K lb load is very impressive compared to the 9-10 mpg I get with my 5.7L pulling the same weight - especially when you consider your speed was a little more aggressive towing than my avrg speeds of 67’sh. But I just cant wrap my head around a modern engine and oil consumption. I just wonder the impact of towing the same 6K lb. Weight on mpg, DEF usage, and oil consumption if the trailer was a high profile (i.e travel or flat nosed cargo/utility trailer) but at a slightly lower speed of say 70 mph…. A wash or a lot worse?
@demonworks have you seen issues with def gauge in cold temps? i parked on a hill in 25 degree temps, everyday my def gauge would show empty until i drove enough to warm the engine.
def freezes in the tank, and coolant circulates through the tank to thaw it out. makes sense why it wont read until the coolant warms up

My 2021 hd used a lot more def and fuel than the 2023 3.0 I have now. The mileage fuel consumption is why I went to the 3.0. An older gentleman at the dealership told me that he pulls a 33 ft camper and was getting very good mpg’s. Double what I was getting from my 6.6 not pulling anything. I pull a 20ft enclosed trailer and still get 28 to 32 mpg. On the def warning I have seen it one time. The level was at the 1/2 tank and went away after adding some. Thanks for your videos.

speaking of peak Torque rating on my 21 GMC Sierra LM2, i was heading to RENO from Sacramento and i saw my Engine load Percentage on the Idash peak at 108% and if my math is correct does that mean Peak Torque put from the engine would be 496.8?
First time diesel owner, really appreciate the content. Have you considered doing a video covering the different temps that can be monitored on the Banks iDash and where they are in the system. I’ve been monitoring EGT1, EGT2 and EGT3 but other than seeing how much each increase when I regen I have no idea what they represent. Your video touched on CAC temps, which was more than I knew before, but I’d like a more complete understanding of what the different temperatures are and which ones I should be keeping an eye on. Thanks again for the content.
1 2 and 3 are probably pre dpf, between dpf and SCR and then after SCR. I would be most concerned with 1. 2 and 3 just determine how well your DPF and SCR are working

At the 26 minute mark in your video, why do you think the truck triggered a regen if your soot level wasn't anywhere near 100%? Awesome video, helping me determine that for my use case (only towing), the diesel seems to make sense
Thanks for the kind words ! It went into regen because the regen % climbs no matter what. This is based on fuel used and distance traveled among other things the ecm monitors. Soot level will trigger a regen, but not the only parameter being watched. Welcome to the channel !
all to do with computer programing, it could see that the temps were getting close to regen temps passively, so it engaged a regen because it would take less fuel to get it to regen temp.
Have you had any radiator leaks. My father-in-law's 2024 gmc sierra has a cracked radiator. His has been stuck at the shop for three weeks. Gmc has no idea when the new radiator will come in. Just keep a eye out for that.

Great question ! You do not as the setup I got was a main gauge and then a piggy back gauge. When you go to the Banks website, it will ask you questions if the gauge is a standalone or add on, the site is set up really well. I believe the 3.73 in the high country I had actually gave me better fuel economy than this ZR2

The other question is, do you use any fuel additives? Do any of them help DEF consumption?
The 6.6 barely uses more when towing vs not. It does increase a bit, but not nearly as variable as the LZ0. The EPA does require a different DEF dosage formula in light duty vs heavy duty. There's a TH-camr named Chad Ivan who explained it in a video once, but I'm not sure I could find the exact one. It boiled down to that HD trucks dose off of power created, whereas the light duties are doing based off of real time nox output per mile.

My 21 is getting better DEF consumption under load than no load. Depending how much towing I do during the week, I've seen regen intervals from 410 towing and 360ish with out towing. Pretty crazy.
Regen will be less when towing because of the exhaust heat produced, helps to burn off the soot.

That document came out in 2022, my truck is a 2024. I did verify there were no new updates to the DEF system.
Having previously been bitten by the 6.2L lifter/pushrod issue i have no urge to buy a GM gas engine truck.
So that leaves the 3L diesel.
Never owned a diesel.
Live in western Canada so cold temps are the norm.
What is this diesel like in cold,-10C or less?

Does it spew alot of smoke on a cold start? (Garage parking)

0F is when GM recommends plugging in. There are several extrwme cold starts on youtube. Zero smoke on cold start. It does have a diesel smell until warm. Fuel economy definitely takes a hit in cold weather due to extended warm up times.
That's so weird. Could something be off? I have a 23 1500 3.0 and I get 17 mpg with 2 cars behind me on a 32ft steel bumper pull. I also run 1/2 oz of EDT every fill up and a 1/2 of risilone in the def tank every fill. Back and forth trips San Diego to LA/riverside daily and I might fill def once a week if that. Also in California so I its hard to roll 70 mph as there are a lot of speed traps and our legal towing speed is 55. I will do 65 regularly and slow down to 55 when passing a weigh station
You are winning the Towing game ! Those are great numbers, my 23 consumed quite a bit and my 24 is what we just saw. Maybe the san diego to riverside is the key since you don't have all of the hills?
@@DemonWorksThat could be why! The only real hills are on the 15 north passing highway 395 maybe a ~3-5% grade alternating before the weigh station. Sucks because DOT will speed trap at the bottom of a hill, So you have to stay 55 and can't use your momentum to get up the other side! Going to LA is pretty flat and gets great MPGs
@@DIRTY30DIESEL speed does affect fuel economy quite a bit (not to mention this being a ZR2 with the active shutters removed). What kind of cars do you carry on that car hauler and do you know the total weight of that setup? Always been interested to try hauling our two cars to events on something like that, being they are only 2000lbs and 3200lbs respectively.
OK so after seeing this, I honestly don't think the LZ0 vs LM2 DEF usage is that much worse at all. If your LZ0 is doing 1000mi/4.45g = ~225 DEF MPG. I did 1500mi of mountain towing in my LM2 and used ~6.5g of DEF = ~230 DEF MPG. Unless I'm doing some math wrong? Doesn't seem terrible to me.
Really nice to see almost 16 MPG in that ZR2. I was expecting much lower average on your trip. 6k lbs seems to be the sweet spot for the 3.0. It's almost like GM did their homework on a product. Gasp!

No worries there, that is by design. Variable oil pump, gives it the oil pressure it needs when it needs it. These are fuel economy engines, high temps and thin oils.

My biggest concern with the 3.0 is reliability will it stand the test of time. I plan to wait another year to see how they are holding up before dropping $70K. Do the GM dealerships have mechanics designated for their diesel trucks?
Depends on the dealership. I'm a tech at a dealership and I share the issues these trucks have throughout the channel. Hopefully a lot of my videos can help you make that decision.
You need a turbo timer so that means when you shut your truck down it will keep running for about 5 minutes to keep from coking up your turbo oil and it works great . It’s better for me because I sit in the truck and let it idle for 3-5 minutes to cool turbo down so it won’t cook the oil in the turbo which it works but makes me feel better about it and Iam looking for a good timer and that’s the way I will go .
No turbo timer available for these trucks, I showed myself idling to cool down in the video. Oil coming was more for the older bushing turbos, the ball bearing aren’t as susceptible to it.
You should check out Spicer Designs video on this engine - there is an oil consumption issue that causes high def usage. Also it apparently wipes out glow plugs.

Seems to be using a lot of Def fluid. I have a 22 Sierra 1500 with 3.0. We went on a trip last fall pulling our 7,000 lb travel trailer. Went about 1,400 miles. Got 16.5 MPG and only used 3/4 of a tank of DEF for the whole trip. LZ0s must just use more.
Each year, they use more. Having owned each year, I have also seen this. What kind of notifications did you get with that trip? The LZ0 is the only truck I have owned that would throw these warnings so quickly.

Oh ok. I only got 1 notification towards the end. It said 299 miles left on DEF. I have gotten the 999 miles left notification once pulling my pontoon boat. But that was right after I filled up with DEF. Not sure what that was about.

I removed the shutters. I was going over 220 degrees normal driving.

You would think it won’t use very much def on the hiway with the engine working but I guess Iam wrong. I don’t know much about def becaus the last truck I bought and I still drive and haul a 5th wheel and haul a big truck camper pulling my alum jet boat and my truck is a Dodge 3500 4x4 5.9 diesel 4 door cab long bed dullay and it doesn’t have any emissions on a 05 diesel and Iam a retired car hauler for GM.
With tire straps your suspension will still let you car to float and not bottom out your suspension and this comes from a retired car hauler for GM .
The location they are at still allows movement of the suspension.
You may need to flash your computer and their may be a update for you def fluid and with a new motor there will be some updates for that motor and if the service manager isn’t your best friend he might not tell you about it but it still be out there for you just have to ask .
Fully up to date, gm tech here.
They did that so when you forget where you parked your truck all the lights and horn will help you find it and not have to walk home .
How good does the engine brake work ?
The rear squat on my ZR2 when hooking up a trailer (and the 6.2L fuel consumption) was why I only kept the truck for 4 months...traded for a 3.0 Duramax.....fuel consumption is great (in comparison)...DEF has to be filled every two tanks of fuel though - dealers all say, they can't adjust the parameters ...so.....who knows. Will 2025 have a revised engine?
25 will not have a revised engine. i will have a viddeo on the next 3.0 Duramax, though.

@@k5nutt I had a serious issue a few weeks ago with my crank cover seal letting go and dropped nearly all the engine oil (while driving) and NO dash lights came on. Kind of an important 'warning light' that GM should consider. Keep an eye on engine oil dropping and look under the truck often. Just my 2 cents. (2023 TB LT truck has 30K miles)
What’s the price of def fluid per gallon ?
I think I read that you lose 30 hp per 1000 feet in elevation but don’t quote me on that one .I can’t wait till the engine gurus to delete and tune and I think these motors will really come to life. But for me I can not see doing all that to make motor not last as long but will be cool how much Ho they get out of this motor .
For N/A motors. For turbo motors its less of an effect
Eggin is correct, boosted vehicles don’t get hit with that as bad.
You need tire straps so you won’t be bottom out your suspension and ruin your shocks .
I'm pretty happy with the way I strapped it down, the suspension is still functioning since I am not strapping the body and cinching down...

You have to sell it when you 100k on it so you don’t have to do any repairs on that engine it’s a great motor but it’s made for cab over trucks so all the stuff you have to do is on the back of the motor so labor cost will be very high . Love the motor but not the set up . GM didn’t want to change it around it would cost them to much money but the customer takes it in the ass !!

Nothing about this engine is made for cabover trucks. Gm tech here, I work on these often. It’s a light duty fuel economy engine.
It’s a great motor but you will have to pull the cab just to change spark plugs !!!

First of all, someone’s really got to work on their punctuation. Usually I don’t care, but this crap you’re spewing is one long sentence, not even a comma anywhere. Really makes it hard to follow along and make sense. I’m guessing you never owned a 3.0 like I/we have. Love the truck. Def is not an issue even when towing a 30 ft RV trailer when the other 95% of the time I’m getting 35-40 mpg. Either way it’s double the fuel mileage of my 5.3. Now read this again carefully and maybe learn how to end a sentence and use comas. Please.
