My DEF consumption has been really low. I have 1357 miles and still have 3/4 of a tank of fluid, however, I did have problems on the very first day with the cooling system. I got 1 mile away from the dealership, the truck had 5 miles on it, and it said air conditioning is shut off vehicle overheating. Took it back to the dealer. They kept it for two days. It looks like the factory did not vacuum the cooling system, and there was air in the thermostat which has to be operated by a tech 2 handheld computer and coolant cycled. Truck is excellent now thanks so much for the great video!
I got my 23 Lzo At4 in July of last year. At first it drank the def hard (it also drinks the def while towing). I’m at 16k miles and winters almost over. Will be back to towing soon so standby on that new def consumption rate. But now it’s getting broken in it uses about 1 gallon of def per 1000 mi. I get 27mpg on daily driving to and from work. I live in the mountains and drive about 20mi each way to work. I absolutely love this truck and tows a 24’ 6.5k lbs like a boss. About 15 mpg towing. I bought a qt of oil when the truck was new on the incase it ate oil as has been reported. It’s still sitting in the garage unopened.
I’ve got a 2024 Trail Boss 3.0 lzo. It’s used one jug of def , 2.5 gallons in 5800km. Mostly city driving and in winter conditions. Had my first oil change and zero oil consumption. Average highway mileage is 6.5/ Litres/100 km keeping it at 100 kph/62 mph. Could not be happier. Towing our 33’ travel trailer (8200lbs) mileage is 19L/100 km double what my 2008 Silverado gasser used to get. No fuss no muss towing through hilly countryside
I just picked up a 2024 Trailboss with the 3.0 and mine dumped the whole DEF tank on my driveway at 103 miles. Ended up being insulation on the def injector line causing the line to not be clipped into the injector the whole way. It made a heck of a mess in the engine bay, but the dealer got it all fixed up and cleaned. I'm a little over 200 miles now and so far so good.
My LZ0 uses about 1gallon DEF per 1,000 miles. Average fuel economy over 12,000 miles is 28 mpg. First oil change was down 12 ounces, second oil change was down 5 ounces. No oil leaks, trouble codes or tire noises but mines an SLT with Bridgestone Duelers, 3.23 rear end with a 2-speed transfer case. I’ve added a pair of Westin side steps, AWE bug shield, a dual Banks IDASH setup. Two more additions will be a headache rack and Tonneau cover, otherwise the truck is stock. My truck was assembled in Mexico and seems they did a really good job.
@@DemonWorksI live at 7,500’. I’m not sure how GM meters out DEF or what parameters are used to determine DEF consumption. Obviously, towing which increases the load and fuel usage increases DEF usage. I don’t think the IDASH monitors DEF flow rate but I’ll check.

I’m at 4400 miles on my 23. I’m not using a lot of def. At least I don’t think so. I added 1 2.5 gallon to it and it is still at the full mark. No oil leaks. No noises with the engine. It is very quiet. My oil is still on the full mark on the dipstick. I’m going to change my oil soon. I will bring it to the dealership and get the oil changed when the truck says it’s ready and check the level difference from where I put it with this oil change I do. I love it so far. Going from 8 to 13 mpg with my 21 Denali hd to 23 to 30 mpg in my 23 Denali 3.0 and still pull my 20ft enclosed trailer like it’s not even behind the truck is great.
Mine used about 8 gallons of DEF in the first 5200miles. I have a buddy who said his used a significant amount in the first 5000 miles and then reduced and leveled out.
Had a 2023 lz0 had a major oil leak around 5k miles that was fixed. Didn't have any major issues and ran it up to 55k miles. I trade about once a year due to driving for work, I'm back in a 5.3l elevation couldn't pass up the incentives, miss the 3.0 but don't miss def and oil but I would trade back into a diesel given the option. But an extra $6k off the 5.3 buys me a lot of gas.

Great video. I am a new subscriber and plan to buy a Silverado 3.0 Diesel in a couple months. I noted all the things you done to your truck. Very impressive. I got a question though - all the additions and modifications, won't that void the warranty in some instances? I plan to get the most extended warranty Chevy offers - but changes like this scare me. Your thoughts please...
Great video! Just got a ZR2 Silverado with the LZ0 myself. Great truck. Looks like you're in SLC too. Yes, the DSSV are a must. We had a ZR2 Colorado and it was night and day from the Z71. We've towed already at 1800 miles. I was hoping the fuel mileage would have been better but I was averaging between 64 to 71 mph guess. Maybe needs a little longer break-in hehe
The issue with the trans temp is not the thermostat or cooler size, it's when the cooling fans kick on. If the truck is at higher speeds, it won't move from 200 degrees. Slow driving, even not aggressive, will see a big climb in trans temp. Need a way to program what temperature the fans kick on.
You are correct but I will disagree on that as well. The thermostat holds the fluid to 196 and then opens. We have the shutters in front of the engine which spend most of their time closed, so even with the fans on, they will only do so much. In my prior 4 trucks, I was able to keep the temps more controlled, this one is the worst, but I also haven't done anything to help with that, yet.
@DemonWorks Thernostat at 196 degrees is just fine with me. Needed for best fuel economy. But shouldn't go up much from there. I haven't done anything yet also. My temp has gotten to 236 going 1 miles back in the woods in 1 foot of snow. My raptor would still be at 200 degrees. Idling only seems to raise the temperature which tells me it's not a slippage issue with the trans, but a cooling issue at the radiator. Once them fans kick on, or you drive fast, the temp instantly drops.
I still lean more towards the blockage in front coupled with the thermostat. The LM2's run cooler than LZ0 engines and the cooling system for the trans was redesigned. I can drive 70mph down the road and still see 210 degrees of trans temp. if that thermostat opened sooner, the temp would not likely climb as high. Compare to the Camaro, L5P duramax and the suv's that run the same trans fluid and camaro/suv with the same trans ... they run 50+ cooler trans temps. The L5P as well, with a different trans and same fluid. Yes, I agree, airflow is what is needed, fans do help, but it's those shutters up front and that thermostat I do not like.@@off-gridengineering3377
@@DemonWorks I would have to believe when the cooling fans kick on the shutters also open. I'm still investigating possible solutions. I'll probably end up with the easiest, do nothing, and if it breaks, it's under warranty.
Gotta wonder if the high def usage is related to oil consumption based on other findings where oil was causing the need for more DEF to keep the DPF clean.
I've been watching your vids off and on since late last year (You made up my mind to buy the baby duramax) Ive had 2 6.6 Duramax's an LMM and an LML, no issues with the LMM, 3 Def tank heaters on the LML. Just purchased a 2024 Sierra 1500 SLT 3.0 X31 about a month ago. Just rolled over 1,000 miles yesterday, I used your install vid for the banks super gauge (running the beta firmware) and pod that attaches to the grab handle, did paint to match. At 1000 miles my Def tank is setting at 77%, so it doesn't appear that my Def consumption is like sky high (I have a 125 hp john deere that goes thru Def like nothing, luckily my 2 bigger ones are older and no def), Regens are starting to get further apart with each passing one, last three were 177, 186, 226. Question is what is everyone seeing on their Banks for ECT, EOT and TransT?? My ECT is running in the 220-225 range, EOT usually about 10 over ECT, TransT 192. (ambient ~75, was warm yesterday, broke a sweat doing a front lift on the new truck!!!). Anyone know if the EOT is actual or a dummy input? Reason I ask is I have a 2007 379 Pete with a Cat acert and the EOT is a dummy reading from the ECM. Thanks again for the good vids, hope you get your new truck issues lined out!!!!!
My LZ0 still consumes some oil at 13.5k miles; I tow a light boat (2300 ish lbs) with it and drive it like the boat isn't there so not sure it that causes the oil consumption or not. Also had the oil leak on mine that I noticed around 7500 miles, wasn't so bad that it puddled every time you parked or anything but had a mist of oil under the truck all over the transmission drain pan. Mine is a 2023 LTZ.
The higher the load or more aggressive driving will typically consume oil, just the way it works with the modern systems unfortunately. Have you gotten that oil leak fixed?
I have a little over 13,000 on my 23 LZ0 and it still consumes oil. I’d like to know why it’s safe for GM to overfill the oil at the factory, but not safe for the customer to over fill it.
My 2024 3.0 (Z71 RST trim, 3.23 axel ratio) has 2800 miles and I have only used a half a tank of DEF and have not had any noticeable oil consumption. Mind Ive only had it 3 months, I have not yet done any off roading and have yet to pull a trailer. I plan on taking my camper trailer out this summer, so I'll be curious to see how much more DEF it will use.
I got a 23 LZ0 with 500 miles on it... at the dealer. They installed a front propeller shaft yoke because the welch plug was leaking. And guess what! The new part is leaking. I'm so disappointed.
if your engine is consuming oil into the combustion chamber, you'll raise the NOx hence the increased def consumption. Maybe why it tripped a code for the sensor if the Nox is much higher than expected by the computer. Start with that oil consumption issue and your def consumption should go down. It was why it happened on the LM2 because of the baffle issue. I have 24 high country LZ0 @ 7000 miles and i can tell you i havent used/burned any oil and it sips on def. Plus you should check def quality, if its low concentration, it will inject more def to satisfy the pre/post NOx sensors
I agree it could be related. Every LZ0 consumes oil in the beginning, that’s why they come over filled by 1 quart from the factory. Just part of break in
I’ve heard you mention Boost Auto several times. In February of 2019 I bought my 2018 GMC 1500 SLE with the 5.3 new. Wanted tow mirrors but GM said they weren’t available. So I ordered the power folding heated tow mirrors from Boost Auto. Had them installed by my dealer. Lasted less than 2 years. Not worth the $850 plus $600 labor to install. Very disappointed with Boost Auto parts.
2024 Sierra AT4 took it easy for the first 1000 miles so the trans would learn my driving style. Last thing I think about now is the transmission, shifts are so smooth. Regens every 750 miles and uses one bar of DEF on the display. Tank of DEF should last 6000 miles at that rate. It really hit its stride at 2500 miles. Switched to Sport mode and am seeing impressive upper 20's milage. 250 mile trip coming up next week, all secondary roads 45-60 mph, I do a lot of these. Expect high 20's this time, 75 on the interstate gets me 23-24 mpg. I think DEF consumption is linked to the mass of the ZR2's tires, adds load to the motor. Just my thoughts.
The transmission does not learn you. It learns shift completion time. There is way too much assumption of big things from things on vehicles described as adaptive or learning. The solenoid pulse width ramp up for the clutch/brake being applied for the upchange and the pulse width decrease profile for a solenoid being shut down is learned on full electronic transmissions. The smooth shifts with the least wear relies on this. The trans computer does not try to anticipate your foot on accelerstor pedal. It does learn the steel plates and friction plate friction changes from wear in and from fluid changes as it ages. The only thing that sort of learns you is a temporary mode that will reduce gear changes if you were to climb a long grade with switchbacks. The normal upshift that occurs when you reduce pedal depression and the downshift when you depress pedal in repetitve cycles will result in trans entering a hold gear mode. When you lift you'd get more engine braking and when you complete turn the transmission would be in the right gear and no up- or down- shifts would repeatedly occur. Once you get to top of grade and not the same grade you can notice the trans not shift up for a brief delay as the decision that the pattern of decel-accel is broken and the normal shift schedule is resumed.
Odd I never had big def consumption during break in. The only time is when I’m towing a 30 foot 7500 lbs brick wall of an RV. Even then not to bad considering the fuel mileage I’m getting. Second question, how do you like the new shocks. Your first video indicated you like them. Still? Do you think they could be a direct swap to a non ZR2? Tks
Yeah, my def consumption is higher than the prior truck which I thought was high back then, haha.100% my favorite suspension and yes, you can get them from GM as a package for your truck.
@@DemonWorks Tks for the info. Down the road, I’m gonna upgrade that. I do a lot of off reading when I’m camping in the Rockies once we get to our camp site. At least that mod can’t really affect the warranty. I’d really love to do the mods you have on the oil and trans pan and cooler but can’t yet cause it might complicate a warranty issue if there was one.
3.0 duramax is a good engine. Oil consumption is not bad unless your towing is about a quart before oil change. Def only consume alot if you're towing, but driving regular it's not bad. I get a 35mpg highway on my truck. So, with all that, I'm saving alot on gas compared to regular v 8 gas
Love the 3.0 I have a Sierra tho. Only problems I have was those CEL early on. I’m at 22,000 miles and my battery fuse box is bad. Truck has been at the dealership 3 weeks this Friday. Part is on backorder they said. Have you seen battery fuse box go bad often or is it just rare?
My new 2022 GMC 1500 3.0 4x4 elevation Transmission went out at 15k miles. They will be sending me an offer this we for a buy back lemon law. Still note sure if I should buy a new one or buy a different truck brand? I want another one but not sure what I should do? Did I just get a bad one? Was not a cheap truck for me 😢
Just curious I am about add def for the first time. Why don’t you add the def at the pump. It seems a lot more convenient than wrestling with those 2.5 gallon jugs. Please Let me know if there is a reason not to use def at the gas station.
My 2022 LM2 consumes about 1 gallon of DEF per 1000 miles. I thought this was normal (in various discussion forums on the internet, people are saying they use about 1 gallon of DEF per 1000 to 1500 miles).
Does that oil pan leak get covered under warranty? If so, would you just have the warranty cover the install of the PPE oil pan (you supply PPE pan) vs going back to a new factory version?
now that you've owned both the high country and zr2 in diesel, if you have to have only one would you still keep the zr2 or would you rather have the high country? nice thing with high country is max towing package for the 3.73 gearing.
How is your DPF% readout been with this new unit? I noticed on my banks Data Monster it climbs like crazy after a regen and once it gets to 80% or so it slows significantly even going up and back down without regen. Averaging about 300 miles per regen so far, about 3500 miles on my LZ0 so far
I agree, but these temps were there the majority of putting around. I think it has more to do with the shutters and slow speeds, but also, the trans fluid being hot then actually needing the trans to work ....
Not that i know of, aside from jsut resetting the fuel parameters as well as the emissions components like they were new. As a etch, we are advised by GM to not do that unless a part was actually replaced though.
GM diesels seem to use a lot more DEF than Rams or Fords. My 2012 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke when driven empty would use about 2 1/2 gal. of DEF every 5K-7K miles. When towing a heavy trailer (over 13K lb. trailer), it would use about twice that much DEF. DEF usage is essentially a function of diesel fuel consumed--the more fuel consumption, the more DEF consumption. All that said, your DEF consumption seems excessive.
been using ac delco on all 5 3.0 Duramaxes, never been an issue. This is a consumption issue, not a quality issue. I am happy to hear the Blue Def is working out for you, though !
Is there any scientific evidence that K&N type air filters increase performance without decreasing filtration? The hard rule is that more air flow=less filtration or conversely, more filtration=less air flow.
Videos have been made showing both sides, it's all in what one wants to believe. Not all filters are created equal, so the flow vs filtration theory won't work.
I have a 2022 Sierra 1500 with the LM2 3.0 diesel with 50’000.00 miles. I am hearing a knocking sound out of the engine when cold. Sometimes after it warm up I can still hear it. Is it normal? It wasn’t like that when it was new, maybe with time it is normal?
@@DemonWorksHearing this is kind of killing my desire to buy this truck. With today's prices, you would think that Chevy would bring to market a vehicle that doesn't have this many issues . Especially high temp/overheating ones. Owners shouldn't have to go out and buy aftermarket parts to fix issues that shouldn't have been allowed to leave the factory in the first place.

My warranty status is the same as anyone else, Parts replacement is at your own risk and if what you do causes an issue, then the warranty coverage on that item or items would be in question.
@@marconi306You are right except that you have to find better lawyers then what Ford/GM/Ram has, so you can prove with out a reasonable doubt that the aftermarket part did not cause the failure. Last time I heard they have some Bad A$$ ones that get paid very well. As for "Illegal for dealers to deny warranty for routine maintenance" they can deny claims if maintenance was not performed to the recommended specs (Oil change intervals, Oil weights, synthetic/non synthetic, special required oils and fluids Dex/MERC fluids etc...)

Great video! Cool that you tried to keep it positive despite the challenges.
Gotta wonder if the high def usage is related to oil consumption based on other findings where oil was causing the need for more DEF to keep the DPF clean.
Unsure, but hopefully it clears up a little bit.
yes they are related to one another
I've been watching your vids off and on since late last year (You made up my mind to buy the baby duramax) Ive had 2 6.6 Duramax's an LMM and an LML, no issues with the LMM, 3 Def tank heaters on the LML.
I wonder if the DEF consumption can be because of the break-in oil consumption?
Very possible !
Whoa, that's not cool at all ! Sorry to hear that! These post covid parts are hit or miss ....
Are you planning on upgrading to the Titan xl 43 gal tank?
if your engine is consuming oil into the combustion chamber, you'll raise the NOx hence the increased def consumption.
Just part of break in
Same with oil consumption using different wix filter and mobile one has stopped the oil consumption and never would I change oil in a diesel at 12k
@@jimmyaber5920 Thanks for the info. Now I know more than I did before. Thanks again.
I’ve got 6000kms now and still 1/3 tank of def left
My 2023 SLT never stopped using oil. Sold it at 18,000 miles. It would use 2+ quarts in 7,000 miles. Not impressive.
I have 12000 miles and I only use maybe five gallons of def, Should I be concerned cause I don't have high def use
Nope ! Be happy and keep enjoying that truck ! It's operating well.
My 2022 LM2 consumes about 1 gallon of DEF per 1000 miles. I thought this was normal (in various discussion forums on the internet, people are saying they use about 1 gallon of DEF per 1000 to 1500 miles).
My lm2's were .75 gallons per 1000 miles. LZ0 definitely consumes more. All varies on driving habits as well.
23,000 on LZ0 and none of these issues!😅
same with my prior 23 LZ0, all vehicles are different.
Hello Brother, can you please provide the link for purchasing merchandise, stickers, and hats? I am interested, thank you.
Steep inclines low range in transfer case, Should see trans Temps go down.
I agree, but these temps were there the majority of putting around. I think it has more to do with the shutters and slow speeds, but also, the trans fluid being hot then actually needing the trans to work ....
How do you get to show the def range on the dash? My 2024 Trail Boss doesn’t have that. Possibly because im in Canada?
it only pops up when it's in the warning stages.
Seems all the 20in wheels and alt tires rigs get the best mileage?
20" have a 12 pound per corner advantage, so yes, that is what I have seen as well.
Is there any way to redo or restart the break in ECU learning process on an older truck?
Not that i know of, aside from jsut resetting the fuel parameters as well as the emissions components like they were new. As a etch, we are advised by GM to not do that unless a part was actually replaced though.
WHEN NEW IT HAS 8 QT. OF OIL WHY CAN'T WE ALWAYS RUN 8 QTS ?
Is it common for them to leak? I just bought a 24 RST duramax….
These 3.0's leak, yes. Will it happen to yours? it's possible but no worries, everything is fixable and you have a great warranty.
@@DemonWorks okay cool, I was anxious about it LOL thanks!!
What size is the PPE elbow? I’m on the website trying to order this setup and there’s a few options.
Think you got a lemon, every 20 fuel ups I fill def. Have over 50000 Km and don’t have oil consumption problems
Mines also a LM2 though 2021
I'm on my 5th 3.0 Duramax, so I was due for another rough one. Minor issues, I will be fine if this is all that ends up being.
How do you get it to show the def range? Mine only shows the bars!
Change mine every 6000kms
GM diesels seem to use a lot more DEF than Rams or Fords. My 2012 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke when driven empty would use about 2 1/2 gal. of DEF every 5K-7K miles. When towing a heavy trailer (over 13K lb. trailer), it would use about twice that much DEF. DEF usage is essentially a function of diesel fuel consumed--the more fuel consumption, the more DEF consumption. All that said, your DEF consumption seems excessive.
Dont use ac Delco def found the same way and went to blue and got a lot more
been using ac delco on all 5 3.0 Duramaxes, never been an issue.
Why you going 4 hi on something not that steep and dry
Just wanted to get the truck and family up there without a huge show. Worked out for me...
I would have to hear it in person, tough to say if it's normal or not as these do make a lot of noises.
Going up that little hill made the trans runs warm/hot. That’s worthless.
well, technically it was hot the majority of the time.. but yeah. worthless....
15 seconds in and already thinking of buying a ford😢
Wanna sell
Your GM high clearance steps? Looking for a used set.
I do, have them listed up locally, I cannot ship. Well, I will not because it would likely be $200+
Take it back to the dealer service department! All of these issues need to be reported so that hopefully GM will be forced to address them.
That's me, I am the service department. I will get to it when I have time, for now, minor.
I hear ya, but all manufacturers have issues. Post covid vehicles have been the worst I have ever seen and I have been a tech for 20 years. It's unfortunate, but the harsh truth. With all them parts swapping you are going to loose your Manufacture warranty. They will deny the claim and make you pay.
