I have eaten many many of those as a SERE instructor. The p38 was added so the can could be opened on the top that the key is on so it could be used to heat water in. If you tried to boil water using the key side as the bottom, the lead covering the hole where the key is attached could melt causing a small pinhole. The best way to eat the bar was to crush it up and boil it in water.
That was the first thing I thought about, open the can from the bottom - to have a bigger vessel. Second was indeed to make a porridge from those bars.

Love the older tin can rations, they are quickly becoming hard to get and some variations can fetch a lot of money, good review as always

Ol' Mate Dropbear it was unbelievably well preserved. I’m still trying to find one of those vegemite pies. I’ve heard they are available in the United States, but no luck so far

Wow. The condition of this ration is awesome. +RC Gusto i didn't get why you didn't open it from the bottom to keep the can for display purposes, if the can is in this almost flawless condition.

I’m curious and this might be a stupid question, but the edges of the can ends look sharp. Are they?
