  • Developed for the Royal Canadian Navy, this ration was more widely distributed during WWII. This 72 year old ration was in impeccable condition. Thank you to Steve1989 for sending this!

    Wow. It's unbelievable when food is still edible after 72 years. Really amazing. This ration must have been stored absolutely perfect.

    That's amazing stuff you have there RC!
    My uncle was a radar technician on Argus Anti-Submarine planes in the RCAF from 62-75, so the survival rations he would have had on-board would have probably been the same as that late 50's one.
    I'd love to be able to track one of those down!

    I work in National museums Liverpool in the UK. One of our departments looks after the collection which belonged to the Liverpool King's Regiment. In tje collection are some of the chocolate bars which were sent to the British Expeditionary Force in 1914. It still smells chocolatey but I never tried to taste it I'm afraid.
    There are also some Christmas cake portions which were sent to the Tommies in the trenches at Christmas in 1914 and 1915. Again I never ate one (I would get tje sack) but apart from being very dry, they still smelled quite nice. They would have been made with dried fruit, steeped in brandy which is why they are still intact.
    Great review btw.

    Ohhhh wow I completely skipped over this video somehow and have come to see it now in 2018. This is awesome! Steve would say it’s “ nice” though I think. And it is. Such good preservation and no puffy botulism cans or anything. I hate key opening cans I always seem to somehow break the tab before it’s done

    Hey RC ! I just subscribed to your channel ! I really Love your reviews and I have been watching for a long time thinking I was already subscribed but just realized I wasn't I'm sorry about that ! These old canned rations are my favorite because they are time capsules and just so intriguing to me ! I can't believe how well this one held up ! Its a shame that they don't take time now days to do things right like they did then ! I have gotten brand new rations that were already stale ! People just don't take pride in what they do anymore ! Thank You for all you so for St. Judes Your a Great Guy I guarantee it !

    Anyone else notice the fly crawling across the food at 12:05? Gusto was pausing for a few seconds, probably pondering if he should kill or catch and eat it. That would’ve been quite the unexpected turn for the review... 😂😂😂

    Whoever invented those little keys for the cans and those P38 can openers have to be some of the simplest and yet most effective tools during WWII.

    • @rcgusto2427
      @rcgusto2427  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Marth agreed. Very important tool. My favorite is the Aussie FRED

    • @fixman88
      @fixman88 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I carry a genuine US made P-38 on my keyring. Think about it; if you have a can you need to open and no can opener, what are you going to do, hit it with a rock? A can opener is one of those things there really is no substitute for. I read that the first cans were invented about 20 years before the first can opener and when they were first issued as military rations soldiers were told to open them by shooting the can with a rifle (I don't know if that's actually true or not).

    • @10191927
      @10191927 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fixy Clary - I doubt that’s true, I never heard of that. For one it wouldn’t make any sense in a tactical scenario to waste precious ammunition on canned food. Plus it would give your location away, and if you were down to a few bullets left I doubt any soldier worth their salt would consider wasting it on a can of food.
      I think what soldiers did do before the invention of the can opener was use their bayonets to open cans. That would make the most sense, or use a trench knife, as these were the most common tools soldiers of the WWI era were using on the battlefield, so it’s more than likely this is what soldiers did.
      I know that if I were a soldier in this time, it would occur to me to just my knife to open the can, or my bayonet.

    • @fixman88
      @fixman88 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Back then when I read that I thought that sounded like something someone with no military experience would say (not to mention that if you actually did that all you would have is an exploded can and food everywhere). I think it might have been during a polar expedition that that 'idea' was actually suggested...

    • @10191927
      @10191927 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fixy Clary - Oh I see, if the can of food was frozen and you had to get it open, just shoot it.
      But again, that sounds very far fetched and something an inexperienced soldier would likely do. I’m sure a seasoned soldier would know how to keep cans from freezing in arctic temperatures and still be able to open a can without much difficulty.
      They did have heavy coats and wool blankets, so if you stored some cans in your blanket, it would be pretty well insulated and wouldn’t freeze, or if soldiers wore heavy coats they maybe kept a few cans close to their body on the inside of their coats so they could eat later.
