About the Swedish Messycake :
Im the provider ( I have a bakery in Sweden ) of it and it is made exclusive for MRE Mountain.
It is a type of Chocolat Brownie, that is a sort of a Swedish National Cousine.
It is, the most selling Cake in my Bakery and 80% of all my production is Messycake.
The cake is baked, put in Mylarpackages & sterilized , and labels are put on it.
It is popular by Preppers and Military since it is flat and you can have it in a pocket
and eat during movement. It gives you Fat,energy, and some sugar for your Brain to "wake up"
In the video, I see you open it, and take it out of the Bag.
That works, byt the easiest way (Military Style)
is to tear it open and PRESS the cake
(like it is cream) in to your mouth.
The cake has no sulphur or strange chemicals in it.
It is wheatflower, Fat,Sugar and a Special Imported Cacaopowder.
The preservative is Lemon, and sodium benzoate.

I know the majority of your comments are and will be about the "Shepards Pie" but I just wanted to say I've noticed that others have had issues if they follow the instructions. I think one of two things is going on. Either the bag filling machine needs some recalibration or when they were initially figuring out, and testing these main some numbers got mixed up somewhere. But I have seen a couple people have the same issue. To me it seems like an easy fix though either put more product in the bag or reprint it to add much, much less water.
Initially this sounded like a perfect menu for me, and really it looked like the biggest downfall was that so-called shepherd's pie, even with less water it still seems like it wouldn't be the greatest thing on earth, but glad to have you back no need to apologize for spending family time because that is really the most important thing.
Hmm maybe a small packet of mashed potatoes to spread on top would knock it out of the park
That is a ton of chow! Like you, I get that question a lot. I usually put everything I didn't consume in the fridge to snack on over the rest of the week.

Eve Black no worries. It looks like we just chuck a bunch of food in the trash. We just don’t want to waste your time eating on camera. It takes a long time to get through all of these items. My kids are usually looking for the leftover snacks when they get home from school. On my Russian mountain ration, my youngest daughter stole 4 bars of leftover chocolate and ate them all in her closet. I was heartbroken...I was looking forward to eating that after work that day.

RC Gusto Yeah,yeah, I've heard it before. Who knows maybe I'll get that mindset once I'm a surgeon for a few years. But for me. Medicine is my passion. Ever since I learned how to talk I loved everything medical. My father has been a emt since way before I was born and he's a certified MA. Since 2 years old I knew I wanted to be an paramedic and a surgeon. That hasn't changed 18 years later. So to me it's amazing. Next year I'm getting my paramedic license then eventually by the end of that year starting university to become a trauma surgeon. My dad has always been the same way. "It's just a job, I'm passionate about it but its just a job" "I'm not a hero." and although I would never think I'm a hero by any means no matter how many people I successfully bring out of surgery, I still will always think it of it more than a job.

Not a criticism, Shepherd's pie is lamb, cottage pie is beef.
True, but as far as i know and remember, cottage pie in the US (unless other countries do it too) has always been called sheperd's pie.

Great review RC looks like a decent amount of food there. I am still a little confused with the shepherds pie main. Even if it is a soup the components seem wrong. I would expect diced potatoes to be in it. And that is the first time i have seen the Swedish messy cake. Such an interesting looking item. Thanks for sharing!
uh...the labeling 'made in' is deceptive since a few items were made outside the US. MRE Mountain should have used 'assembled in' since all items in the package were not made in the US.
Family is important good for you to spend the time with them. Overall it looked pretty good. The shepherd's pie needs to be done differently. They need to be done with the veggies and meat in one and the mashed potatoes separate so that you can layer it properly. And yes I agree must have been a misprint for amount of water. Thanks for the great review.

Looks like a pretty nice MRE overall. The only thing I wish it had was a couple of FRH's, but maybe they wouldn't work with those kinds of bags. I'd add another coffee as well. I'm just not a big tea drinker. The shepards pie doesn't look at all like shepherd's pie.
A bit of a necro response but freeze-dried foods need the water at a rolling boil for the best results.

sir, can't see how I missed your channel, I mean I've seen Nathan a ton gundog, steve, art and nina, and all the others, nice review, i'd have been happier with the AUS CR1M spoon, one thing I will say, you kinda messed up, the Swedish messy cake needs to be heated then while still warm add the choc/peanut spread over it.. def, subbed. looking forward to seeing more of your content.

Glad to see you back RC !! Good to hear your voice again also friend. Good looking 24 Hr. ration. A large portion of food to try, wow. Light breakfast, but plenty of calories. Lunch, Thin chili, but looks good. I know, you have heard it many times, but since we know each other, hint to new viewers, and reviewers, use slightly less water than prescribed, you can always add more. You can drain away liquid, but, drain seasonings away also. Tortillas, very fresh. Crackers would be nice addition, agreed sir. Sides and drink, look good also. Chocolate bar looks awesome. Again, I am not big on sweet, or, overly sweet, However, LOL, I appreciate A good chocolate bar, especially, one as fresh as yours. Dinner, Shepherd's pie, different, somewhat of A letdown, but, then again, think of what Hash browns, lasagna, poutine , other military versions, of, civilian meals are. These are not continental cuisine !!!!!!!!! They are cheap versions, of , good food to help sustain A soldier or fighter. Caloric intake, nutrition, well good, taste, well, if it was what you had, all you had, you would eat it. And, it would keep you alive, until you could get to A , RED LOBSTER !!!!!!! The pizza main , I have reviewed and liked. Reminded me of high school cafeteria pizza. Drinks, sides, all look good. The , " messy cake ", is new to me. Very cool. Great ration, great review sir. Shepherd’s pie really doesn’t seem like a good choice of meal to freeze dry since when cooked it’s supposed to be a layer of the meat then a layer of potato.I would think that it would be better changed to some kind of stew like a hot pot. I’ve never heard of Swedish messy cake so I’ll have to keep an eye out for that. On the whole though if I were going camping or something I think this would be a pretty good day’s food. It would possibly last a bit longer if I wasn’t doing anything strenuous. Thank you for reviewing this menu.

Hi Gusto, The entire menu on paper looked great! But you came up or MRE mountain came up with something TOTALLY new with Sheppard Pie Soup.....lol I’m sure hope they correct whatever the problem is because that MRE could be a really good one for a day trip or just having it for fun.

Only problem I see , how much extra water you have to carry to make this . Not to mention drinking water. I would recommend this for a secured area or vehicle being close by.

Why is it characterized "cold weather" ration? Is it not stable in warn weather? or maybe higher calories for very cold weather?
Cold weather rations are higher in caloric content and generally contain freeze dried items that will not freeze. They do have the drawback of requiring a lot of water to prepare.

You keep calling this an MRE, but it's not. MRE stands for "Meal, ready to eat", and the key requirement is that everything must be able to be consumed without preparation, cold if necessary. But this requires a reconstitution of most items, for times of 20 minutes or more. That's not Ready To Eat! I think you should clarify this in the video description, because the vendor's name misleadingly contains the initials MRE.
Packet Guy I don’t remember referring to this kit as MRE. It is a freeze dried ration. “Custom MRE” is a company that produces custom rations.
A couple of times you said "again, custom MRE", which I didn't realize was a company. I thought you were saying that it was an MRE item customized for this kit.
It's worth noting that the actual reason cold weather rations use freeze-dried components is because they expect them to be exposed to freezing conditions, which will destroy actual MREs, because they contain liquid that bursts the retort pouch. By eliminating the water, these rations can be exposed to any conceivable low temperature outdoors, including at places like Antarctica.

Okayyyyyy… Shepherd's Slush and Assorted Salty Things on a stiff bread-like product. I have had some of the things in this meal. Yeah, the water levels are whacko. The drinks taste pretty darned good with just 8-9 ounces of water, but they can be okay if you let them sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes. Of, that made mine taste better (the orange one, by the way.) However, that dinner meal looked gross. I make Shepherd's Pie and it is thick enough to spoon it onto a flat plate. That looks like all they want to do is get a lot of warm water into a person. Yuck!
Question? is the price of $35.00 for one 24 hour pack a bit overkill. I would not pay that maybe for two not just one. give me a big bag of Rice, dried beans, & bouillion cubes make a better meal.

I used to make chilli with TVP, it's not bad. I have even used it for lasagne. Most people i know who have tried it all agree that it tastes very similar to minced meat.
