Organ Bowl - Wood turning an organ into a bowl
Welcome back! In this video I'll be taking the wood from a 1907 organ and turning it into a bowl. Probably the first organ you'll see in a wood turning video being cast in epoxy and turned into a bowl. But leave it to me to come up with a project that ends up kicking my butt fighting me all the way lol.
This organ came from my aunt and uncle as a project for the lathe. When i removed the mirror there was a newspaper article from 1907 behind it and the mirror was stamped and dated to 1907. The wood was mostly black walnut.
I had to cut it into sections, plane and glue it up into a massive block. The keys are cast in Alumilite clear slow. And I learned that clear slow does not like CA glue. Was talking to my bud SocoJoco about the failed casting, in which he had the same issue with CA glue. When I recast it, I used hot glue with no issues. I finished it with Danish oil sanded to 1000, buffed with tripoli then white diamond. I didn't want to make it super glossy or finish it with something where you couldn't feel the wood.
Pretty stoked about this one and they just loved it. I couldn't make them a regular bowl out of such a unique and old organ. So I turned it into something that would be around as an aireloom for another 100 plus years.
Thanks for watching!

The Eye Bowl - Epoxy Resin Projects
มุมมอง 358ปีที่แล้ว
Welcome back! In this video i'm whipping another of my epoxy resin projects. Many projects in the works and on paper, some with epoxy resin some not. Just getting around to doing them is another thing lol. But these epoxy resin bowls are pretty cool to do for projects in the shop. Never really know how they will turn out. Just have to let the universe decide I suppose. This is made from mostly ...
Junk Bowl - Epoxy Resin Projects
มุมมอง 508ปีที่แล้ว
Welcome back! Finally back to some epoxy resin projects. I have a few more epoxy resin pieces coming up. Just so many projects going on. Another junk bowl, really need to tackle the ugly mess the organ bowl has become and since the Dawgs won last night I'll be doing a red/black all epoxy piece as a celebration. This piece is just an assortment of left over pieces from mixing cups that cured, so...
The Black Eyed Peach - Woodturning peas with a ch
มุมมอง 5002 ปีที่แล้ว
Welcome back! getting around to finishing up some content. All these twice turned bowls are about to give me a black eyed perspective on peach wood lol. This peach wood almost didn't make it, but was able to use some black Starbond glue and keep it from being a funnel. I sanded it down to 1200 grit and hit it with some 0000 steel wool. I finished it with mahoneys walnut oil and the oil/wax past...
Just A Peachy Wood Bowl - Wood Turning
มุมมอง 3372 ปีที่แล้ว
Welcome back! This is another twice turned peach wood bowl. The species of peach wood isn't the fruiting kind. It was kind of a rare find. I've only seen maybe 5 other of the trees in peoples yards. But it's a beautiful and fragrant wood when turning. Makes nice bowls also! I sanded it to 1200 grit. Finished it with Mahoney's walnut oil. Let the oil cure in the wood good for about a day then ap...
The Nut Slinger - GIANT SLING SHOT
มุมมอง 3272 ปีที่แล้ว
Welcome back! So I know this isn't wood turning, but it is wood working, and having fun with a huge sling shot and my son, and maybe a few high speed water balloons. We were careful and wore protection, kinda lol. This is the stuff we get into and I figured you all would enjoy it. I will definitely be making another one that will have better up and down capabilities. Total up and down free of o...
Spalted Dogwood Wood Bowl - Woodturning
มุมมอง 5172 ปีที่แล้ว
Welcome back! This is another regular wood bowl video, but just sit tight because I'll have more (fun) wood projects coming soon. One being a nut slinger, yup, a nut slinger lol. Having many walnut trees in your yard gives you tons of free baseball size objects that need to be cleaned up. So I found a fun way to get my son to do it lol. But anyway, this dogwood wood bowl is one of many I had to...
Making a wood bowl - wood turning black walnut
มุมมอง 1K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Welcome back! In this video i'll be twice turning a wood bowl from a walnut tree. I took this tree down from my property since the tree had a nasty rot spot in the wood. Some of it has been made into bowls, hollow forms, beard combs, chalices and more. Walnut wood is one of my favorites to work with, something about the earthy smell. Kinda like leather and tobacco, just a warm comfortable aroma...
The Broken Bowl Failure - Woodturning Fails
มุมมอง 4702 ปีที่แล้ว
Welcome back! Soo this failure of an accident made me step away for a minute! This is a twice turned blank of spalted dogwood that was harvested from my property after it had fallen in the woods for some time. Luckily the root ball came up with it, and had some burling in it. Which is where all of my dogwood bowls have come from. I'm giving this a go with audio from the turning and some of musi...
Wood Turning - Turning a wild cherry wood bowl
มุมมอง 7972 ปีที่แล้ว
Welcome back! This is some wild cherry wood that has already been green turned. So yea, another wood turning video with no epoxy, sorry! It has a bit of a bark inclusion that I wanted to incorporate into it. I've had good luck with cherry wood, but it really depends on when the wood is harvested. I sanded it to 1200, applied Mahoney's walnut oil and the oil/wax after the oil cured. Thanks for w...
Pecan Wood Bowl - Woodturning
มุมมอง 4352 ปีที่แล้ว
Welcome back! In this video I'll be finishing a twice turned wood bowl from pecan wood. This is the first wood bowl I've done with pecan and the start of using the medallions on the bottom instead of burning them. So tell me what you think! I filled the gaps with starbond ca glue and finished it with Mahoneys Walnut oil and wax after the oil had sit for a day. Nice little bowl but pecan doesn't...
Willow Wood Bowl - Woodturning
มุมมอง 5542 ปีที่แล้ว
Welcome back! This is just a short video on turning some willow wood into a wood bowl. Willow wood is very light. A little warning if you get any wet, let it sit outside for a day or two. You'll thank me later lol. The wood loves to suck up water as willow trees love wet areas. It has a sour smell and oozes the water out, making a mess, a big one. Looked like someone poured salt on a giant slug...

Taking it to a higher level ❤
❤ My Beloved, isn't this beautiful wood? I look forward to watching you ake such beautiful pieces ❤
Hi , thank you for showing this there’s barely any videos. Though if I were to only use liquid silicone would it be the same process?
I’m looking forward to what you do with the organ 😀
You’re a likable guy. Enjoying your channel so far. 😬
I enjoy you gouges.. I seldom sharpen as m42 is so hard and holds an edge for so long.. take care..☺️👍. I been turning bowls for 57 years.. Years ago high speed steel was great til 10-15 years ago M2 showed up.. M2 was 8-10 times harder and held an edge forever.. Ha ..well 6 years ago m42 show Ed up which you folks make.. Your bowl gouges are 4-5 time harder than M2.. M42 is the best and only cater and sons make them.. M42 is better than carbine.. great product all.
Beautiful!!! How did you manage to get this color mix - do you have any video of doing it?
Absolutely stunning. How much would something like this sell for?
That finial really makes the piece.
BEAUTIFUL piece. Thanks for the wood and dying tutorial.
New to Turning. I am trying to turn pecan and having a hard time. The outside cuts easy but the inside is really rough. Any tips.
Great job on this and your other bowls from this are incredible awesome!! How much putty did it take? Was is it able to fit in pressure pot? Just an old guy looking for a hobby. Hope to hear back Keep doing amazing things Glenn
Thank you! Yes it was able to fit, but barely. I think I used about 2lbs of the putty but then had to go back with a bunch of regular poured silicone. It’s a fun hobby to get into, but like all hobbies, they get expensive!
Thanks Michael, I’ll make sure I but thru your Amazon account and any others. Appreciate your help Glenn
@@Glennnewman-zu9ce you’re very welcome and I appreciate that!
I CANNOT LET MY HUSBAND SEE THIS 😂😂
😂😂
Omg, I would kill for those! I bake and munch and ice cream and chutney.....lol. we Pay 9 to 10 bucks a pound! No lie....
Walnuts...cost more than beef...lmao
I’ve got tons of them but I don’t eat them. I’ve tried giving them away but no one wants them Unless they’re shelled.
I can only say: WOW!!!!!!!!
I like the „quartz „ effect!!!
Price
I love this technique great job.
Absolutely beautiful bowl. what type of dye you are using in this video?
Nice work!
The turning is great. The camera work needs help. All of the movement, especially when you are fast forwarding is nauseating.
Omg that is absolutely gorgeous.
DON'T BOTHER with anything BUT DEFT! IT WILL LAST, it WILL NOT YELLOW! i have used it FOR YEARS and i guarantee it IS the real deal! I had proprietary lacquer made by a very professional paint company specifically mixed for my art work( that includes wood) and even as I thought this "special chemically designed" lacquer was going to give me an "EDGE" in my art sales and getting into galleries -- it really DIDN'T turn out better than DEFT--- one thing my "specialty lacquer" did was; I was able to use LESS COATS, but- for the time and expense--- it was NOT better than DEFT! So, I am back to DEFT, hopefully this gives you some feedback as to the quality ---don't forget to use a FULL MASK, protect your lungs!
I was inspired by your rich looking bowl. I took it one step further: after dye, I applied a coat of sanding sealer, and then applied JoSonja iridescent paint on top of the dye in little "splotches" in the bottom of the bowl and around the edges, to create the "BIG BANG" artistic look. Followed it with 20 coats of gloss lacquer. Fantastic.
Nice! I’ve seen some interesting things done with the iridescence. The string method is pretty cool also. I red dyed a willow hollow form and used some crumpled Saran Wrap to dap it on a while back.
How are you mixing the die, 50 / 50 water and alcohol ?
Terrific job mate! Is Deft still your goto gloss spray?
Superb piece
is it just regular wood dye?
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Damn Brother that came out awesome! I used the Keda dye on an oak ply Subwoofer enclosure I built a while back. It came out so Good I want to try and make some bookshelf speaker boxes for the garage and try my hand at the Multi color dye on those. Extremely important not to get this on your skin while rubbing the dye! Ask me how I know! I had blue fingers for 3 weeks when my glove had gotten a hole in two fingers and I didn't notice it!! LOL!
Truly stunning 👍
I was wondering did you sand any between coats of Laquer?
Good wood and color selection. Great job. The videos are good but you really could loose the music.
A beautiful result. I can't help but wonder jow it would have looked if you'd centered on the limb and made a single wing bowl out of it. Good job.
Nice piece. What is the purpose/benefit of applying the sanding sealer?
Your stain-layering made a great effect Michael ! 👍 Why do ALL your pieces look so nice ? Why can't you make a bad piece for a change 😹😹
Thanks! I like doing it when the grain will corporate or make it look better. Lol isn’t that the name of the game? If you’re going to do it, do it right?
WOW - HUGE Undertaking - JOB WELL DONE! Loved the color mix. 🤩
Thank you! Definitely surprised me when I seen what was inside!!!
you took me back a long ways when you made that glue calzone
If only it were easy to knead like bread 😫. Stuff was tough!
Michael - this is THE most beautiful piece I've EVER seen ! Literally. From thousands I've looked at. And I'm sure you understand why. The combination of dye colors and the resin is perfectly gorgeous ! Congrats ! You win the Trophy 🏆
😊 thank you! Was definitely one that I’ll have a hard time even getting close to again! But well worth a try, maybe a better shape next time though!
Is it aniline?
Yes. But you have to mix t it. It’s dissolvable in alcohol, water and lacquer. Possibly urethane.
@@EppsCreations interesting. I once used powdered aniline in the thinner and alcohol.
@@RogerioDuarte that’ll work but if you’re going for a double dye, you may run into sealing the wood grain preventing it from absorbing more.
That turned out perfect, Epps. I love the coloration, the shape, and how thin you got those walls done. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome mold, brother. Got a nice big bowl with no wasted epoxy. Win win 👍 Looks beautiful, Epps
Man you ended-up with maybe the most beautiful piece I've ever seen. Great ideas 👍
Thanks! Just trying to keep it outside the box!
LOOKS LIKE A BIG PLASTIC BOWL NO WOOD TEXTURE
Cool, thanks for the opinion.
A good piece but please, leave the music out. It's such a distraction.
Yea I’m working on leaving it out.
started out good till the music started
Yup, older video. Working on leaving it out of new stuff
That looks fantastic, 👏
Thank you!!
Wow - that is an absolutely glorious finish you've achieved there - it's gleaming! And your son clearly has a good eye for colour - excellent choices.
That face at 11:44 ..creepy.
Yahoo a new lathe! Nice!
