Organ Bowl - Wood turning an organ into a bowl

  • Welcome back! In this video I'll be taking the wood from a 1907 organ and turning it into a bowl. Probably the first organ you'll see in a wood turning video being cast in epoxy and turned into a bowl. But leave it to me to come up with a project that ends up kicking my butt fighting me all the way lol.
This organ came from my aunt and uncle as a project for the lathe. When i removed the mirror there was a newspaper article from 1907 behind it and the mirror was stamped and dated to 1907. The wood was mostly black walnut.
I had to cut it into sections, plane and glue it up into a massive block. The keys are cast in Alumilite clear slow. And I learned that clear slow does not like CA glue. Was talking to my bud SocoJoco about the failed casting, in which he had the same issue with CA glue. When I recast it, I used hot glue with no issues. I finished it with Danish oil sanded to 1000, buffed with tripoli then white diamond. I didn't want to make it super glossy or finish it with something where you couldn't feel the wood.
Pretty stoked about this one and they just loved it. I couldn't make them a regular bowl out of such a unique and old organ. So I turned it into something that would be around as an aireloom for another 100 plus years.
    Thanks for watching!

A great way to repurpose something that was destined for the dump or burn pile, especially real ivory! Great job Mike.

Thank you! But, Uhhhhhhhhh yea…. About those……. They didn’t make it in the failed casting 😩. Had to turn all that out and replace the keys 😭.

That's a beautiful bowl and definitely a conversation starter. Thanks for sharing your whole process including all the trials and tribulations along the way.

Thank you! Gotta include the bad with the good. I’m far from perfect and like for my tribulations to be part of the learning for those who want to learn.

This is such a massively beautiful bowl! I love it! I hope it finds a place of honor in your collection.

It has its place of honor from the ones who gave me the project to begin with. Has some local history with it and family heirloom. Sitting nicely with my aunt and uncle. I told them I’d make them something from the wood, but couldn’t disrespect something from 1907 in any fashion other than something that would carry on another 100+ years.

You created a one of a kind piece of art my friend. You also have so much patience. Congratulations. It's beautiful. Never seen anything like it.

What a stunning tribute to a once stunning instrument. Even with the whoopsie and substitute it turned out so beautiful 😍😍. Well done

Thank you! I couldn’t let something with such history live on as mediocre. Had to give it value that would make it remain another hundred plus years.

Lol you should have been in the shop when I turned the failed casting out. 3/4 bowl gouge, pull cut and let it eat! Had to get gloves after making my hand bleed from the blow out lol.

Thanks! The 4k is being super slow processing for some reason. But yea, crunched 5hrs down. Was quite fun!

Gorgeous. What a Herculean project! Glad everything worked finishing it, I’d hate to see you cry…I’d feel the same way and probably join in the misery.

Lol I wouldn’t have cried. But my blood boiled in confusion when the first cast failed. And yea, Herculean project is right. Biggest I’ve cast and finished to date!

I know it was a bit low quality. 4K is taking longer for some reason.

Thanks Billy! Was a fun but almost to big process. Tried to leave the chuck on during casting but the lid wouldn’t fit from it being so tall.

I think this is one of the most interesting turning projects I've seen on the tube. The only thing is I think it would have been slightly better if the keys were turned around as if sitting at the organ. lol
Thanks for your time on this, Great turn.

Lol thanks Lee! My life has been full of doing complicated things so this was only fitting that I challenge myself in such a way. Lessons learned, possibilities opened, always pushing for more. Just wish my pressure pot would hold something 24” across so I could really push it to the limit!

Absolutely beautiful. I love the grain in that wood (walnut I think). Too bad you do not have a coring system to save some of it.

    • @EppsCreations
      @EppsCreations  ปีที่แล้ว

Thank you! I’ve still got wood left over from it for another project. But just off the shape and size of it, I wouldn’t have been able to core it. Not to mention I didn’t want to risk breaking the casting and not have a form to fix it with.

What a COOL way to repurpose the old organ. Now I know what to do, the next time someone wants to donate a broken organ to the church. Just buy it and give it a second chance...

@@JimmyLee0757 lol that it was!!! I weighed it after casting. 23lbs. One of the heaviest I’ve turned. Luckily I upgraded to the laguna. Was no was the mean green harbor freight machine would have handled it lol.

@@EppsCreations I hope to upgrade, one day. Right now I have a 10X18 Vevor. I don't complain because my Bride gave it to me for my birthday, last July. I've been wanting one for years. I'm working on my first epoxy piece now. Cherry, with termite and carpenter ant damage. Hopefully it turns out nice. See you in the next video.
