Fit for a Chef - Wood turning a pepper mill

- Welcome back! In this video I'll be wood turning a pepper mill that was commissioned for a home Chef out of Canada. So it is quite fitting. I've never made a pepper mill before so this was a first for me. The customer wanted a darker wood burl with epoxy and a high gloss finish so I knew just what to do.
I sourced the elm burl from World Wide Burl on Instagram. Cast in Alumilite Amazing Clear with Eye Candy Micas. The white round blank is from an hdpe cutting board that was cut round on the circle jig on the bandsaw. I used card board and tuct tape for the mold and just glued it to the hdpe with hot glue.
I use various carbide cutters when turning and honing my skill at using bowl gouges on epoxy.
The finish is a CA finish that I used Starbond medium clear on. After the finish was applied it was wet sanded from 400-2000 grit then buffed.
The pepper mill kit I used in this turning was from Wood River. It comes with a 6, 8, 10 & 12" shaft but can be easily corrected for a custom fit just by cutting the shaft and hammering the end back flared.
Hope you enjoyed it!!!

The finish is better than anything I have ever seen on a show car. Awesome. Beautiful pepper mill. Take care

@@EppsCreations I never thought I would ever want to do a pepper mill since they seemed so “ ho hum” but yours was truly impressive, your client should give a big tip, above and beyond.
@@trurex007lee7 that has always been my thoughts. Kinda like small stuff. Not much room to give “your touch” to. Though making them this way vs all wood is much more expensive. So it’s kinda hard to throw that price out there for a pepper mill.
Beautiful😍
Thank you!
Awesome job, man. 👏. What was the silvery mica you used?
Thanks! It was the eye candy icicle.
Beautiful piece! What was the total volume of your pour? How long is the clear slow open? Thanks
I used the amazing clear on this one. I used about 2L on this pour. The burl had a ton of open space. But the clear slow pot life is 12 mins vs the amazing clear @ 30 mins.
I don't think enough turners wet sand. What a difference though.
It’s very tedious! I’ve never been a fan of the paste. Even tried to make some and never could get one that you could get like glass all the way. So that’s why I do it by hand. Plus viscosity at 2000 grit needs to be slow motion
@@EppsCreations I have to say...looking at resin projects where the project is only done with dry sanding and paste...not a fan here either. I know many just do that because it's easier and a couple said they are just too lazy to do a wet sand. Two got super mad at me for even suggesting their projects would look better wet sanded. I unsubscribed from their channel because they basically just told me off. But on the other hand, my mom always said if you are going to do something...do it right.
@@EppsCreations my dad was an aerial photographer and when he used a dark room and even then said the fumes were horrible.
@@morgancalvi6675 well that’s some peoples style and it’s not a bad finish. Especially when used on wood.
As an aspiring chef and a professional commercial kitchens designer, send it to me and I'll let you know. 😉😎
Hahaha already sold man.
@@EppsCreations Dang it! 🤣
@@BadAppleWoodwerx I can make another and trade for green backs 😉😂
to much music for me plus to loud
I understand. I’m working on changing that with future content to try and please viewers. Just with TH-cams strict copyright and music in the back ground, I have to cut audio.
