Making a wood bowl - wood turning black walnut

  • Welcome back! In this video i'll be twice turning a wood bowl from a walnut tree. I took this tree down from my property since the tree had a nasty rot spot in the wood. Some of it has been made into bowls, hollow forms, beard combs, chalices and more. Walnut wood is one of my favorites to work with, something about the earthy smell. Kinda like leather and tobacco, just a warm comfortable aroma.
I sanded it to 1200 and the applied Mahoney's utility finish (walnut oil) and after it cured, applied the oil/wax finish, let cure for a day then wiped off. It's a bit thicker than danish oil so it takes a while to soak in, but is food safe.
I'm working on adding more of the natural sounds of turning in my videos. I just need to get some head phones or ear buds that will still allow me to hear while i'm turning. Music is a big part of who I am and I really enjoy listening while i'm working. Really helps set the creative mood.
    Thanks for watching!

Great looking grain patterns. Your dog is pretty chill through it all. I wish mine was still around.

She absolutely is. As long as she’s by my side she couldn’t be happier. In the way at times but wouldn’t change it.
You can always get another when you’re ready?

@@EppsCreations We have a bunch of grandkids so travel seeing them for long day trips. Our English Springer Spaniel would be difficult to replace, he was an excellent dog with us, our kids and grandkids.

@@trurex007lee7 that’s understandable and awesome that you consider your time able to dedicate to one before getting. They’re such great companions in life!

Good to see you and Lady back in the shop. Love the bowl. Where do you get the coins you put in the bottom with your logo?

I had a buddy of mine make them that runs a laser engraving co. They’re anodized aluminum that’s laser engraved. If you’re on Instagram his link is instagram.com/onearmgunner?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y= only $2 each so not a bad price for added fanciness.
