Hi, I'm Ren, I'm a queer content creator who loves to make videos analyzing media, pop culture, and society. Stories have always been my escape, whether through TV and Movies or books and video games. My dad used to call me the TV Kid, and my partner has jokingly called me "the Media Queen," I've consumed a lot of different stories across a ton of different mediums and genres, and I love to talk about them and analyze them.
I want this to be an inclusive space, so please don't hesitate to tell me if you ever feel like that's not the case, because I have biases and make mistakes like everyone else.

Talk To Me and the Horror of Isolation
Loved my time with the movie. Many things to think over after watching. Love the visuals and characters. Has many great themes. I take the main point is live, create, and treasure the time you have. I watched it with subs and after the credits. I saw the cast for English and want to rewatch again with dubs. Ghibli and Miyazaki are truly something spacial and try to get anyone to watch one of there films. They are amazing. Spirited Away maybe my favorite but I love so many others. Where do I rank this one. not sure. I think pretty high. I already want to rewatch it again which is a great sign. Great video with some great insight. The movie makes me think and feel emations. Its a strange movie but also feels very real.
Thank you! Totally agree with you about Miyazaki and Ghibli, and also about this movie! It's so dreamlike, but also so relatable. I'm hoping to re-edit this video now that the movie is out on streaming, because the clips I could get when it was in theaters were so limited, but we'll see, haha 😅 I think my favorite Ghibli movie is either Mononoke or Howl's Moving Castle, but it's so hard to pick! They're all so amazing
This was a solid Futurama episode not just a solid episode of the new Futurama, felt like classic Futurama from the initial silly turning everyone upside down to the return of silly blink and you'll miss it background jokes
Totally agree! Honestly this one was better than most of the comedy central ones barring a few standouts, I feel like people really forget how bad some of those episodes were after season 11 flopped so hard 😅
Your outfit matches the wormhole. That can't be an accident. Well done, I like the earrings too. :-)
Wow, I loved this episode. It was on the money all the way through. The music was great which helps a lot. I also liked all the designs. Even Zoidberg looked very classy. I didn't know that was possible! Jessica, the white wooly mammoth with purple shades? So many great jokes, like the Professor saying there is just no way to ..(with the sad music rising) .. WAIT! (And it stops.) 😄 The giant caterpillar which just ends up crunching some fash (that's a word now), and Hermes 'And we're fine.' Bender 'Just kidding, I'm a regular customer.' Wornstrum is back and he always has a pet that follows him. The wormhole is even beautiful in keeping with the fashion theme. This is Futurama at it's best, it's like they pulled out all the stops when writing this one. Easily the best of the season for me. Great music, great fashion, great jokes, what more could a Futurama fan want? It just makes me want to .. (music rising ..) SING .. Farnsworth: Oh shut up!! 😄🙂
Oh THANK you for wondering how Fry knows who Cara Delevigne is.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought it was kind of weird 🤣
I don't know who is going to read this, if anyone but The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket is a 1838 novel by Edgar Allan Poe. The nazis weren't a thing until, at BEST 1925, so yeah it aged fine, just because idiot bigots took an idea shouldn't diminish the original thing.
I have not watched Futurama in yearsss!! I take it this is currently airing? I'm afraid I'll be disappointed with the new episodes. Social commentary is fine occasionally but I'm afraid it will just be exclusively that.
It is! Season 11 was mostly not great imo, but some people liked it, the last episode All the Way Down was pretty good This season started off pretty rough, but got better as it went along, it's got some off episodes here and there but I'd say it's at least on par with the Comedy Central seasons
No, this episode is so good that the social commentary is just something that happens to be there. This is a great one. 🙂
Good comment. Apparently Man is the only animal that befouls its nest. Bill Moyers said the philosophy of "IBGYBG" sums up the problem. When the crunch comes, "I'll Be Gone, You'll Be Gone." He was talking about affordable health care for rural Americans in the 80s or 90s. And why the industry did nothing to fix the looming crisis. Thank you.
Man is also the only animal that pays for what it needs to survive, all the other animals get to live here for free 😭
Solid episode for sure. Season has been great so far imo. My only gripe is- why didn't we see Zoidberg change shells? Missed opportunity. haha.
Oh wow that's a great point! Another shell fashion show would have been so fun!
Best recap episode ever!
Thank you 🥺❤️
@@renrants you're welcome
Willa was a total standout, I leaned forward to watch her no matter what she was doing on screen
She was so entirely captivating!
I think this was one of Flanagan's weaker shows from the writing perspective. His usual subtlety wasn't there. but it has some really beautiful moments and I didn’t mind some of the humor, but the heavy-handedness of the preaching was very distracting from my enjoyment of the show.
Totally agree, it definitely had its moments and was miles ahead of a lot of other writers, but my expectations for Flanagan are just SO high after loving pretty much everything he's made
I wonder if this will be something that actually sticks around or if they'll just ignore it in the next episode.
I think they'll ignore it and we won't get an explanation for how they fixed it, unfortunately
I loved this one!
It was so good! It might be my favorite so far this season
@@renrants It's mine so far! All of the Tim Gunn and Cara stuff killed me.
Such a great cameo! It really felt like they cared a lot about making the Futurama fashion world feel real
I really love the last 4 episodes. I was only iffy about the first 2 episodes this season. If the rest are like the last 4, then this could end up being my favorite season since the Fox era. I especially love how this season seems to be doing more worldbuilding and actually using the world itself more and showing more locations and technology from the time compared to last season, where I didn’t feel like it did a good job (although I do really like last season minus a couple of episodes). They are getting much better at this and make me excited for the next 20 episodes. Although funnily enough, my favorite parts of the first episode were the NFT stuff bc it was fun to see a museum heist, and the adults not understanding NFTs was hilarious since nobody understands them. Oh, and one last thing, I don’t really think they have a Leela problem. I saw your titles on your other reviews, but I think Leela has been handled well this season.
I didn't love last week's episode, but even the ones that haven't worked as well this season feel like a huge improvement over last season for sure! If you end up watching the other videos you'll see why I think they could do a bit more with Leela, but it has still been better than last season
@@renrantsI have a feeling this next episode will be another winner!! It has a writer coming back from the Fox era! He never wrote for anything after he wrote the Farnsworth Parabox in the last Fox season.
Oh wow, now I'm excited!
@@JamStan1978 Writing is everything with Futurama, the budget cuts which lost the good writers is what brought the initial Comedy Central episodes down. Everybody was saying 'I can't put my finger on it but it's just not the same', well, that's the cheaper writers.
@@blucat4 It has the same writers. And people love the comedy central seasons now.
6:20 and yet here I'd thought they give Zoidberg a New girlfriend but I'd guess not
I just want justice for Marianne 😤😤
8:16 Obvious Planet of the Apes reference is obvious (also I've finally gotten Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes on Blu-Ray Great movie to watch ether on Hulu or Disney+)
Still Pretty Great episode of the season so far
7:05 it feels a re-peat of when the Planet Express crew went to that baron wasteland planet of Books in a couple episodes earlier in the season? or was it just me?
Definitely a bit of overlap for sure
It is, but I thought the episode was so good in general that I don't care. It's also a repeat of how Wornstrum gets the better of the professor who then gets sad as he says his career has come to naught. Again, I don't care, I loved this episode, and the reappearance of Wornstrum. 🙂
6:59 it's amazing how they fit the entire Planet Express Ship into that interdementional trash can all though I question how would a Wolly mammoth into that said interdemeional trash can?
it's neat they did Twist of Frankenstein with a Model's head
it feels great they did a Crazy Sci-Fyi Adventure of Futurama with Fashion thrown into it it may be the best episode of the Season so far
I totally agree it was so refreshing and fun!!
I like the outfit the robot woman is wearing, it’s neat.
It's so cute!!
@@renrants I know, right?
Another moment of foreshadowing was when Misty gave Shauna a monologue about a woman's daughter dying for her baby shower, and then Shauna lost her baby.
Oh yeah that's a great example!
From researching a handout made for my students, butterflies fold the wings up and down while moths fold their wings sideways. Usually, I guess. Useless trivia.
That's really interesting!
Another good review. Thank you.
Thank you!
The fact that Natalie was again presumed to be nothing more than a drug addict upon her death is so devastating and definitely points towards her death being planned from the beginning.
Yeah that definitely broke my heart :(
Thought it was pretty good. Not topping the temp for me, but much better than the first couple this season
I think it actually slightly edged out The Temp for me, just because the ending was great and all the fashion jokes really worked for me
@ 1:52 And they head over to the head museum
@cameronspalding9792 yes! I loved that they brought back the couple of female presidents from way back in the day, too!
@@renrants that's good. It's always better to have people appreciate different episodes over having one episode everyone thinks it's better than the rest!
With the bathtub scene, I was squirming but also got the eroticism of it. Years of reading fanfic attests to the fact that something absolutely does not need to be healthy or good to be hot as a fiction. Where I draw the line, like you, is tongue in the drain hole, like... there's probably mould in there!! Same with the grave, honestly I really dug the vibe (no pun intended) of the grief and guilt and desperation and desire but dude, do not get fresh dirt up your dick!!!
Ive long since accepted that Futurama is just one of those shows that writes men as people but women as women. I havent seen the new season yet but I would say that Futurama has a women problem, not just a Leela problem. Im a woman and I love Futurama, I grew up watching it and it will always have a special place in my heart. That being said, it is absolutely not a show I will ever rely on for good female representation.
Yeah, I'm kind of in the same boat as a femme nonbinary person who grew up watching the show. I think the writing for the female characters definitely tends to be very uneven and it has glaring issues especially in episodes like Neutopia where the female versions of the male characters were incredibly stereotypical I think I used to give it more grace as a product of its time, but it's hard to extend that grace to episodes written today when they should know better and have more women in the writing room
you missed so much of the film that it's like we watched a different movie. i used to be a lot like oliver, like, scary lot. and i knew a guy who was a lot like felix. the dynamic is like, not what people think it is i didn't catch the minotaur-theseus connection though, that was really interesting
Could you elaborate more on what's different about the film/character dynamics and the way you interpreted them based on your experiences vs my interpretation? Since I'm obviously not an MLM I absolutely can imagine there are subtleties to the dynamics that I missed completely and I'd love to hear more about that
@@renrants honestly i started typing out a whole thing for that earlier comment but i feel like to get my point across i would have to make my own whole essay about it. the most glaring thing is that oliver was not trying to take saltburn from the beginning, and in the dynamic of loner with a gregarious wealthy crush is a kind of love where you wish you could be the other person.
That's valid 😅 I don't really think Ollie was after Saltburn from the start, just that he did intentionally deceive Felix to get close to him from the start, since he didn't start murdering until after Felix made it clear he planned to cut him off permanently, I think it was more about possessing Felix than the house
i love this so much
🥺❤️
I really enjoyed the fact the boys formed an actual book club and got super into it. The fact that most of their group most are idiots or people would not read classic literature while the girl's group had more smart people who would like classic literature made for an entertaining subversion. Its like you said, Amy has a PHD, Leela is the most mature member of Planet Express and the doctor is highly educated as well, meanwhile Fry, Bender and Zoidberg couldn't get through a magazine between them let alone a full novel.
Yeah, I think I'd have liked it more of it didn't kind of take all the air out of Leela's storyline
I miss smarter than the others but still easy to anger Leela.
Me too :/
futurama has a "should have stayed dead" problem
It definitely feels that way sometimes, especially because Meanwhile was such a flawless ending
This whole season has been soulless social commentary without the timeless charm of the classic series
It's had its moments, but I largely agree
@@renrants I think the line for me was the <virus> episode. Specifically the "emotional support raygun" joke, which makes no sense in universe. Compare that to the similar "Anthrax, for duck hunting" where it was a reference to people needing automatic guns "for hunting" but even in the context of the scene it made sense he would have it.
I don't know they way they portrayed Fry's mom was nothing like that she was indifferent of Fry but did care and Fry loved her This is why I don't like when the keep bringing it back. As someone that grew up with parents the were indifferent too I identify with Fry my parents are gone too but I don't really hold anger for them.
I can definitely see how that kind of sucks the way they retconned Fry's parents, I do like a lot of the episodes that are more sentimental with his family, but it is kind of a betrayal of the original storyline for sure
I never really thought too much about Amy and Leela's relationship. I am more of a Professor Farnswroth and Zoidburg entuusist. Amy saying "I guess not" did make me laugh.
It was funny in the way all Amy's roasts are kind of funny, but I've always been a bit bothered by how antagonistic their relationship is, it'd be nice if they could move on from that 😅
Imagine having a book club at the place where you work. These people never go home. LOL
It is kind of funny how everything always happens at the Planet Express building 🤣
This episode was ok but it had a glaring plot hole. Why were they all reading books when a few episodes ago they just said people don't read in thr future they dump them on a far off planet. I wish they explained that away with a little joke or something.
Yeah, that annoyed me a bit too 🤣
Compared to Bender and Fry, Leela doesn't have as much standout episodes for herself in the show.
The struggle of being the voice of reason character. Leela does get good ones though like the one that revealed she is really a mutant. Not every vocie of reason character can top Richard from Unikitty. He is one of the best voice of reason characters.
@@icecreamhero2375 I wouldn't say for South Park though. Many of my favorite episodes of the show focus on Stan who is the voice of reason.
@@CrossoverFan4life Lois Griffin from Family Guy usually gets fantastic episodes. Lethal Weapons is one of the funniest ones ever.
Nice review by the way, this is something I noticed, I found it weird that Nibbler is yet to appear in season 12, like where is he? because his last appearance was Parasites Regained. My guess is he could be living in Leela's old apartment or something.
Oh yeah, that's a great point, weird we haven't seen him!
2:58 i loved to see more of the Mutant Girl
Me too, Vyolet is great!
Burno Earth lmao😂
The only joke I managed to laugh at was Fry’s delivery on “you bastard.” and I liked Vyolet’s reappearance. She’s my favorite mutant, and I wish she’d shown up more often.
Totally agree! Vyolet is the best
5:20 well even the the funeral may be the funniest part of the Episode when Leela and her friends beat up Pheebie
HATE to be that Guy But The Simpsons did it better in there Modern Day Seasons when Homer and his Bar friends had to fofill Larry's last wish of them together at a fishing trip when Larry passed away
even though I'd found the episode to be okay I'd wish they given both Amy and Leela better character developments at least They Give Leela a female friend group
