    I miss the days when you could just like a movie and have no idea it was widely disliked. We had it on DVD and I just thought it was cool. Just because I tried to dress like him in high school shouldn't have any bearing on this at all.

    THIS🙌🏼 Too often we just accept that a film was once popularly deemed 'bad' and we never go back to challenge that ourselves. If you had fun, if it gave you an experience, if it's about something interesting, what other metrics do we need to just call it a good movie?
    Awesome video!❤️❤️

      What’s ALSO baffling because you have movies like Rambo II, Rocky 4, COMMANDO, Predator, and Total Recall where *camp is front and center* sometimes, and those movies get passes from action fans.

    I honestly love this movie so much. It definitely feels like nostalgia blended together. As someone who just loves vampires and monsters, it was something that captured my attention immediately. Im so in love with the themes, the outfits, the scenery, the silliness to it all *chefs kiss*. I just think that many things definitely needed a little bit more work cuz it was not perfect, but it was definitely a masterpiece in my eyes. Genuinely, I can confidently say this movie was my sexual awakening, specifically the masquerade scene.

      @spiffygonzales5160 to me, it's just the amount of emotional investment Dracula has in Van Helsing vs the others, Van Helsing wearing dracula's ring for hundreds of years, Dracula alluding to a shared "sordid" past

    I really can't recommend the Witcher books and games enough. Even though the books came out in the 80s-90ss, it reads like an expanded, more queer and feminist version of Van Hellsing, focusing on a Witcher, a type of monster hunter, as he adopts a bisexual girl as his apprentice who is prophesized to give birth to a Messiah, leading to a massive fight over who gets to control her super baby, with our core cast fighting to preserve her autonomy and ability to consent to what happens with her body. It's full of wonderful twists both dark and fun on old fairy tales and folklore

      @@renrants I fell in love with Witcher 3 as soon as I saw the monster designs. They're a bit campy and silly but still treated as scary threats. Have you played the standalone Gwent game or the Tabletop game? The TRPG is absolutely incredible by the way, letting you make all kinds of characters that fit into this world and it has a randomized background generator that is so much fun to see what kind of misfortune your character suffered before the start of the game.
      They've also used those to expand the world, to greater and lesser effect. Most of it is good except when they went into the Witcher schools' histories. Some get away looking too good, like the Griffin Witchers (I still don't get why people think Witchers have no emotions if the Griffins were so world famous for being Jedi like advisors to kings) while others get kind of crapped on, like the Bears. (All their redeeming qualities are hinted at and instead we get told a bunch of constantly bad negative rumours about them, leading a large portion of fans to think they're strength worshipping survival of the fittest assholes and it drives me crazy).

    • @renrants
      @renrants  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      They were so good! It was the perfect mix of beautiful and genuinely moving, and silly and campy!
      I haven't played standalone or tabletop Gwent, but now I want to! It's definitely a favorite part of the game for me.
      That's really interesting, I love a good expanded universe, they always tend to have an amazing mix of really cool stuff and unhinged nonsense that I find so delightful 😅

    • @Donovaneagle2098
      @Donovaneagle2098 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@renrants the Tabletop game is just the absolute best. It doesn't even have every class be good at fighting, others are great at verbal combat and talking their way out of stuff, and it naturally encourages more variety of gameplay sessions than DnD, since instead of classes you pick a job for your character. It's so insane to, say, solve an encounter through blacksmithing skills instead of combat.
      Also if you were wondering the Bear Witchers implied true philosophy is that they're intensely anti-authoritarian firebrands. Makes sense since a lot of early Witcher test subjects were bought as slaves and experimented on, so them breaking off and starting a school all about self determination and them being friends with Skellige because they vote for their rulers and treat their subjects with more respect makes a lot of sense.

    I found it interesting that you included "Queen of the Damned" in your list of "Bisexual" horror movies of the early-to-mid 2000s. It can be said of all of Anne Rice's novels and adaptations that fluid sexuality was a key theme, with the overtly romantic tones and textures of the relationships between Lestat and Louis, Lestat and Marius...Well, pretty much Lestat and everybody, man or woman. Didn't matter, he just wanted to be loved.

    I keep telling people this movie is queer gold, but it's harder to convince people than to just lure them over for a queer Hallow-Eve watch party. This is definitely going on the list for 2024.
    Another underappreciated queer horror classic, and one I was obsessed with as a kid, was the original version of Dark Shadows. That 1960s soap was full to the brim with queer camp, even if you ignore the fact that half the cast were gay IRL, including Barnabas himself, Jonathan Frid! The tumultuous, tortured love triangle between Willie, Jason and Barnabas in particular is *painfully* obvious.

Julie Newmar. I liked both, but the Australian version was a bit better. I’m ashamed to admit that it took more than five minutes to recall any drama with gay leads that I enjoyed. In HS senior class, our English teacher allowed a student to give a monologue from The Boys in the Band that was very sensitive and moving. I enjoy that we can have a fair discussion as Americans, and I do see your point. However, if the tables were turned and I was to say to you that this film is a heterosexual masterpiece, would you feel like I was taking ownership and putting in a box whilst labeling it as belonging to the straight community?

    • @renrants
      @renrants  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      I'd probably just think it was silly since straight people don't have to rely on subtext and have tons and tons of stories, including this one, where the hetero romance is explicit in the story. But I wouldn't feel like it was taking my interpretation away from me or anything. There also isn't really a "straight community" y'all have never been oppressed for being straight and therefore have never had to unite in community because of it. 😅
      The reason I have "bisexual masterpiece" in the title is because that's one of the unique elements of my interpretation, and I'm also not the only one who has interpreted it that way before.
      In the video I explicitly acknowledge this is subtext we're projecting onto, it's a bisexual reading of the movie, a bit of a thought experiment where we resolve every ambiguity in favor of the most bisexual interpretation possible.
      It's also weird to feel like my interpretation of the film is somehow taking possession of it or taking anything away from you. It's still the same movie. You don't have to interpret it the way I am. I don't really expect heterosexual people to interpret media through a queer lens. This video was mostly a fun essay for me to write with the intention of sharing it with my community, or open-minded people who are curious about why I might interpret the film this way. You might just not be the audience for this video and that's okay. 🤷‍♀️🤷
      I think this is a problem with a lot of the "anti-woke" discourse of whatever, where it comes from a place of feeling ownership and feeling like that ownership is being usurped, but art is for everyone and all our interpretations and different versions of things can exist simultaneously. It doesn't need to be either or.
      Let me ask you this, did you even watch the video before having this reaction? I do appreciate your willingness to engage in discussion as well.
      Also, I'm Canadian 😅

  • @JamesLane-k7w
    @JamesLane-k7w 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    That it's a bisexual masterpiece! Why can't it be just a good movie without putting it into any narrative, straight or gay

    • @renrants
      @renrants  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      It can be? For me, it's fun to analyze media through that lens, especially in an era (2004) where media with explicitly gay characters was rare, it's why I use the phrase "queercoded" on several occasions to describe the characters.
      I am not saying my interpretation is objective, but art is up for interpretation.
      It's also worth noting there are hetero romances in the movie which means the default interpretation is already a "straight narrative" not a neutral one
