i don't know how this ended up on my feed and i was like "wait, i liked killing of a sacred deer, how dare you" but this was an extremely good breakdown and as a Lanthimos Enjoyer i thought your critique of kosd was fair and since i have yet to see poor things i'm glad to have this context. i'm subscribing.
Something weird happened with the algorithm where TH-cam was clearly suppressing the video because of an issue with the ads. I also reposted it partially as an experiment to see if the changes I made would make a difference 😅 they didn't take the other one down or anything, I just made it unlisted so people wouldn't get confused
I spent ages working on this video so I couldn't let it get relegated to algorithm hell like some of my other videos that I didn't spend actual weeks editing 😅
Fantastic analysis. He's absolutely my favorite director working today. I'm a bit of a nihilist so The Killing of a Sacred Deer happens to be my favorite of his, though Poor Things is the most enjoyable. I'm also a huge fan of Dogtooth and would encourage checking it out (if you're concerned about certain aspects of the film that it has a reputation for, I'll say that while those are certainly present, they're not presented in an exploitative way). My only criticism is that while I respect your opinion on the Stone/Gladstone debacle (and that Stone probably didn't want to win), I think evidencing it by showing the performances "side-by-side" like that doesn't really provide an "objective" basis as to which one is better. They're too totally different movies that warrant completely different acting styles, and removing context does a disservice to both performances. Also, an exposed comedic performance is generally going to appear less "prestige-y" than a dramatic one, even though comedy is generally considered harder. (And this isn't me being defensive of my fave; I was always team Sandra Huller :D)
Thank you for your kind words! I've totally been meaning to check out Dogtooth, maybe I'll give it a go! I think that's a fair criticism, and agree the two performances are totally different for totally different films, I think Stone's performance in the Poor Things was fantastic, especially learning more about the behind the scenes of tracking Bell's development and physicality when scenes were shot out of order. I do still think Gladstone should have won, but I could probably have found a way to talk about it that was a bit more fair in differentiating them 🤔
(ignore if this is a double comment, my reply vanished on my end 🤣) Kinds of Kindness just premiered at Cannes, but isn't in theaters here till June, it stars Jesse Plemons and Emily Stone, and he has another film currently in production that will also star Emma Stone 🤣
@@renrants Ohh. I like Not Matt Damon. I'll have to keep an eye out for that as well! Emily is great as well, of course. Glad she's keeping the train rolling
@@renrants Double Comments ALL the way! (Why is this the second time this reference has come up in the past week?) Extra comments make for extra engagement!
True, haha! Also thanks for the subtle reminder that she prefers to be called Emily Stone! I didn't find out until after I made the video, but I should be kroe diligent about remembering going forward
I was still working my way through the first video when this one dropped (Jenny Nicholson soaked up a lot of everyone’s attention). Is this exactly the same, or should I switch to watching the new one instead?
It's the same, but I unlisted the old one! Sorry about that, I didn't realize people might be taking it in piece by piece, but there are chapters in the description so you can hopefully get back to where you were if you want to finish it 😭 Since it seems to have caused a lot of confusion I won't do this with future videos unless TH-cam takes them down, I can avoid the problem I had with the first video pretty easily in the future!
@@renrants Oh, it's not a problem. I had the old one saved to Watch Later, so it's still accessible, and saved my place. I just didn't want to miss out on any new changes. I'll run the new one in the background afterward to score the view. Thanks for the info.
Can't wait to see your channel grow; great video essay!
Thank you so much ❤️

Thank you so much! I can definitely see why people like KOSD, all his movies have a lot to like about them, and they definitely take big swings
I already watched (and enjoyed) this! What did TH-cam do?!
