    I just wanted to say I recently discovered your channel from the yellowjackets video and I've watched some of your other analysis videos. I'm really impressed, your videos are really well made and provide really interesting takes on the shows and movies you look at, a lot of which are movies and shows I enjoy so y'know that's cool. Just wanted to say how great your videos are and that I've subscribed and wish you and your channel all the best. Can't wait till the next video :)

    This one was a blast. Somehow the vicinity of "they made her blonde" and "they wanted this to be like James bond" rewired my brain to now assume they changed the hair color and title just so it would sound vaguely similar. Bond and blonde. What's wrong with my head? 😅

    Thank you for another interesting review/analysis. In today's World, the relationships, the allegiances and alliances with the different factions could be even more bewildering. John Goodman's character could wear a red hat, for instance. The graphic novel twist reminds me of the ending of Costner's No Way Out.Till the next review.

    I haven't seen this one, but it kinda reminds me of the movie Kate on netflix... although I think that one is probably even darker. Would be interested in your take on it. Also have you seen Renfield? It kinda seems like something you might enjoy. It is quite gorey though.

    I think you need to explain why the use of tropes is bad, negative or harmful. Relying on them in order to tell a story can be unimaginative, but they exist for a reason. I also disagree with your assessment. I think killing Lasalle was much more in keeping with a different trope popularized and film & comic books called fridging.

    • @renrants
      @renrants  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Imo tropes aren't always bad, negative or harmful, but bury your gays is.
      Fridging is (generally) specifically applied to female characters killed to propel their male romantic interest forward. Bury your gays is very specifically killing queer characters in a story, especially unnecessarily, so imo it does fit into bury your gays pretty perfectly. But I will say the tropes are adjacent to each other and have a lot of overlap. It's fridging adjacent 😅
      Bury your gays is also pretty infamous for targeting WLW couples like Lorraine and Lasalle.
      I do agree I should have explained more about why it's harmful, rather than just using bury your gays as a shorthand and assuming the audience knows what that is though

    • @jc8847kvkc
      @jc8847kvkc 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @renrants Wow, thanks for getting back to me on this. That's pretty neat. If this were a vin diagram, I think it would fall between "fridging" and "bury your gays".
      I think it's more fridging because we needed to be able to watch Percival be murdered and framed without feeling sorry for him, and we needed a reason to watch Lorraine do that and still feel good about it in the end. She ended up being the good american of the film. His brutal and unnecessary murder of Lasalle gave us the justification to not feel bad when Lorraine, later and cold blood and unwarrantedly murder and Allied officer on screen. Good american trope heroes don't do that unless they've been fridged

    • @renrants
      @renrants  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Of course, I always love a chance to discuss movies with someone!
      I think you actually raise a good point and have convinced me that it was fridging in addition to bury your gays, especially because fridging is often a bit gruesome, leaving the victim for her partner to find, and they definitely did that with Lasalle.
      I think it's a great point I hadn't really considered about making Percival unlikeable and irredeemable enough that we don't feel bad for him.
      I think they sort of did the same thing with Spyglass since Percival sold him and Lorraine out to the Russians as well, but it's so much more visceral with Delphine because she was such an decent person, especially compared to everyone else.

    You like "Atomic Blonde" movie, but I like "Killing Eve" TV show.
    Both are very similar stories, with very similar ending, I guess.
    Yes, she is also gay with blond hair who can kick any one's ass.

      @@renrants Only her ironic tired look during the interrogation and her smoking throughout the film are worthy of Oscar! And her temperament... She "tormented" poor Delphine in bed for about a week and forgot about her mission, as she was told during the interrogation ("you were clearly distracted", and at that moment she was looking at the sleeping Lasalle). A real sex machine on vodka.)
