I think what is missing is the innocence you saw in the original 5 seasons. The later seasons are much more topical issues which do date a bit immediately
It was a HUGE step up from last week, and while I enjoyed it, there is still something missing that I'm having trouble pinning down. It's almost like the world feels a bit hollow and less realized than it used to be, or I could just be projecting because it was off the air for so long.
No, I think you're right that there's some kind of special sauce missing, it was missing in a lot of the comedy central episodes too, it's almost like they don't know the characters as well as they used to or something
I did like this episode. Honestly, I felt like early Futurama focused on Fry as a main character a lot more. In the new seasons he's a side character. Fry is central for a reason, and Futurama will always feel less like itself the less they feature him.
I agree, Fry is a great lens through which to explore the world because even now he's still a bit of a fish out of water. He used to also just be more important to major story elements in such a big way and without it a lot of episodes feel a bit aimless
I'd just caught the new episode right when it dropped and it was Great and a step up from previous episode and just as Good as the other Fry Flackback episodes with a Great parody of Squid Game (Which Disclaimer I've have not watched Squid Game on Netflix) but this episode is Great
At least Futurama is going strong with new episodes on Hulu unfortunately the Clone High revival on MAX just got canceled after two seasons and it ended on a cliffhanger that pissed me off
I saw that! Honestly I'm not surprised, I literally waited 20ish years for that revival (I watched the show as a little kid when it first aired 😅) and I gotta say the revival had some fun elements but it was overall really lackluster
@@renrants thus is why Futurama succeeded with it's revival on Hulu Meanwhile the Clone High revival failed to Captured the Magic of the original series meanwhile Futurama still has the magic with the same writers same creators and same voice actors thus Futurama is still going strong with new episode but Clone High failed and felt very lackluster
What was the song at the end and on the exit credits? Made by the Futurama people I presume, but it sounds very much like Stereolab. (You'll just have to trust me I guess.)
@@renrants How did you know the song? Why didn't you mention it? Anyway thank you. 🙂 Most of the Futurama music is great, Picasso 5 with Baby Love Child, the 'Leela and Lars' song which I just recorded off the show. They have great music! 🙂 Do you agree it sounds like Stereolab?
@blucat4 I did mention it in the video, but it's easy to miss! I think it said the song name in the captions, but I also just googled the lyrics and the listened to confirm it was the right song/version 😅 It definitely has a bit of a stereo lab vibes for sure though!
@@renrants Well I will watch your Futurama reviews from now on then. 🙂 I was watching Johnny 2 Cellos but as of this episode you have to become a patreon to see them, so bye bye to him. (Plus anyone who knows Stereolab straight off must be ok. 🙂👍)
Thanks for the support! I have another one coming out today or tomorrow :) I'll try my best to keep up with it, but I mostly do youtube as a hobby and in my day job I'm a lawyer, so making videos every week can be tricky 😅 but I'll definitely have thoughts about every episode up here at some point
I don't know they way they portrayed Fry's mom was nothing like that she was indifferent of Fry but did care and Fry loved her This is why I don't like when the keep bringing it back. As someone that grew up with parents the were indifferent too I identify with Fry my parents are gone too but I don't really hold anger for them.
I can definitely see how that kind of sucks the way they retconned Fry's parents, I do like a lot of the episodes that are more sentimental with his family, but it is kind of a betrayal of the original storyline for sure

There's definitely even more cynicism, there's almost a sarcastic tone, but it feels directed inwards, almost? Hard to my finger on it

I agree
@@rogue265 Glad I'm not alone. I was worried I might be turning into a grumpy old man! lol
@@renrants Fair point, but going off pure memory and no research at all, I think they still had a couple all-timers in that run.
They absolutely did! The Late Phillip Fry among them
Mention of Fry's dog. Left a hole in my heart when I first saw it. Thank you for an interesting review.
It still bums me out any time it comes up 🥺 so sad 😭
10:18 Well Futurama is good at making Star Trek references
Constantly 😅
@@renrants well if it wasn't for Futurama I would gotten hooked into Star Trek
It’s not just you. I thought of the Talosians as soon as those aliens appeared on screen.
THANK YOU! I expected to see everyone talking about it and nothing 😅
The ultimate reveal would be to pull out to Captain Pike on Talos IV "dreaming" the entire episode.
Oh my god 🤣
lets hope episode 3 is good and let's hope the rest of the season is better then the previous season
They do look like the Talosians, but they bet like the Gamesters of Triskelion. Their robes are even the same colors as those brains.
Ooh that's a great point!

Well, just from your description, it definitely seems like a Star Trek reference.
Well if it was wasn't for Futurama I wouldn't get hooked into Star Trek
Oh wow! Now that's a lot to owe to Futurama, haha

I'm glad you liked it too! I was definitely pleased, I am excited for episode 3 once I make a late dinner, haha

It was Your Mum by Wet Leg! They used part of the song in the montage too

TWO IN A ROW?
It keeps being relevant 🥺🥺
well this episode is Good but not as Great as The Luck of the Fry-rish and Jurassic Bark And as well as the other Fry flashback episodes
Totally agree, I do think it's up there with Cold Warriors, but it's not quite at the level of peak Futurama
