Ooo, I like this take that it wasn't all on Mariner. Jennifer sort of ended it first AND could have had a grown up conversation at any point. At the very least she owed Mariner an apology.
@@ShereeseAlexander It did feel incredibly awkward to me, though she does later admit that it was really messed up of her to pretend they were still dating.
@@YumLemmingKebabs totally! It was awkward, and that was the funny part about this whole situation. The part I didn't think about was the way that Jennifer was putting it all on Mariner as if she didn't have equal responsibility for ending the relationship.
While probably far from logistically sound, I do like how they dealt with their issues in the midst of the mission instead of slinking off to a corner to chat things out. I'm sure most of that is the condensed run time of LD, but it always irks me in other shows when they basically call a time out from the crisis for a chat. haha
That's a good point about the Admiral going AWOL. He could resign instead. Also, why did anyone want him back so badly? Were the space whales missing him?!
1. Because he went there on vacation and just stayed. No confrontation or debreifing, just stayed, hiding out and enjoying life. Sim0ke, easy escapism. 2. He was a skilled admiral. A lot of time and effort was put into his education and training. Not rehabilitating him would be an overall loss to the Federation and Starfleet. All he needed was a cause that appealed to him to return to what he originally had worked for. 3. You didn't mention this, answering something in the video, as far as the Jennifer/Mariner relationship...seldom are relationship ended cleanly. Many, many fans complained that the situation with them was unacceptably ended, Star Trek represents a better way than current reality. The writers and production staff recognized that and, after learning s5 would be the last season, they set out to wrap up loose ends...with the intention of leaving these characters open to future projects.
I too am looking forward to a T'Lynn centered episode, and I feel exactly the same as you the past few days. I've had this long script ready to film for days, and I just haven't mentally felt like being in front of a camera. We'll all get through together...I hope.
@@renrants Yep. Less on Mariner, more on Jennifer. Mariner apologized FIRST, though. Takin' responsibility for when she's wrong even when she barely (though not COMPLETLEY) is even wrong in the first place.
I always felt the way they broke up reminded me a lot of the way early 20's relationships sort of disintegrated, and then how people talked about it later in life. That said, breakups i've had have been pretty spectacular like those hah
Okay, that is not an unfair assessment of Jennifer's behavior in this episode. Absolutely 100% valid (even though, as dismissive as this is going to sound, Jennifer IS an Andorian, and Andorians, historically, have always been a little nuts, so you kind of have to take the rough with the smooth). But there's a bigger issue at play here that the episode COULD have addressed, and instead, they just shrugged their shoulders and went, "Well...(tch!)...NAAAAAAHHH". See, to be perfectly honest, I don't know if what Mariner and Jennifer had was really so much of a "tough" conversation. AWKWARD, to be sure, but if they wanted "TOUGH", the episode could have delved deeper into how Mariner's separation anxiety is root cause of pretty much ALL her problems, and how it's even hurt her ability to form stable relationships, because in her mind, developing a real emotional connection with someone means being forced to live EVERY-WAKING-MOMENT in mortal terror that that person is inevitably going to get ripped away from her. So avoiding relationships is just the all-around easier option for her to deal with. I mean, leave us not kid ourselves, it WAS the ACTUAL reason Mariner purposely distanced herself from Jennifer when she got back to the Cerritos. She wasn't afraid of more conflict. She was afraid they were gonna MAKE UP, and that she was gonna have to go through this all over again. But instead, the episode just looked the other way, and I really don't get why. I mean, yeah, one of the main hooks was to make fun of how a lot of characters in Starfleet relationships almost never see each other, due to individual duty assignments (Lower Decks never being too proud to swing for the low-hanging fruit). But even if we were being forced to accept that Jennifer was being written out (which I admit, I'm not thrilled with, but I'll get over it) there WAS a genuine opportunity here to squeeze some more character growth out of Mariner, and honestly...they kind of welched on it. And again, I'm asking, WHY? You've only got seven episodes left. What are you gatekeeping at this point? Does it REALLY make sense for you to still be holding your cards to your chest NOW? At least, that's just MY thinking on it.
Did you notice how interested T'Lyn was when she found out that Mariner had a girlfriend? Seriously, watch the scene again. "Mariner, I find it odd that you never mentioned you have a girlfriend." It's almost as if she is taking note of Mariner's orientation for the future. Or maybe I'm just dying for a Pon Farr episode with T'Lyn and Mariner hooking up!
Have you watched Three Body? Chinese SF. I haven't but a singer that I like sang a song from it called, "Doomsday Ship," at a concert and they cut to women and men wiping away tears. The lyrics don't seem to be so sad, but that part of the drama where it is played must be unbearably sad. I'm thinking of watching it. Take care and thank you.
I have seen the Three Body Problem Netflix show, but I haven't seen the Chinese version, I started reading the book though and it was really interesting
@@renrants Sorry, it is actually a single by Sean Tang - Doomsday Spaceship (Normandy Live) and if it were connected to a movie it would be The Wandering Earth, but it might not be. The translation of the lyrics in his version is better. Two lovers, one boards the ship to an uncertain future. The other left behind has a gun. In China and Japan, when women cry strongly, they cover their open mouths with heir hands while tears flow. See you on the next review. Thank you.
Loved it showing that relationships of all kinds can be messy and handled immaturely, media puts so much pressure on the few queer relationships in the media to be some beacon of maturity and fucntionality. Nah we fuck up to xD
