I opened this channel because I wanted to tweet a poem about Anthony Huber killed in Kenosha. Then I decided to post readings of poems, to give my mind some other focus besides the election campaign then in full swing between Biden and Trump. After the election was settled - and after the coup attempt - I suspended posting.
About that time, I discovered “BookTube” - that region of TH-cam populated by people who talk about books - in my own quest to improve my reading skills. Having been a writer, I was never much of a reader. Then, in 2022 I began to focus on reading as my primary hobby, and later to post videos in which I discuss what I’ve been reading, or other topics, both book-related and not.
In 2023 I wrote what I expect to be my last book of poetry. In spite of this channel’s birth name, poetry has moved to the sidelines, aside from the occasional reading of something that piques my fancy.

Thank you for the video, David. These are somber times.
Certain problems feel more acute, but we each have only our own day to face, so I try not to look at these times as more somber than any other.
I have been thinking along the same lines. These are troublesome times and voices need to be heard. Mine might be small. Enough small voices might make a roar. I might loose a few subscribers when I speak my mind but I think it needs to be done.
@@anotherbibliophilereads Small voices are of use even if no roar comes. First thing I noticed this morning (as a page refreshed) was my subscriber count going down. 😂

@@anotherbibliophilereads Somebody made an absurd comment on Steve’s video, to wit that “he’s read all these books and still doesn’t know what fascism is” (or words to that effect). And seven people liked it. First off the premise is absurd, but what are they doing liking it, or watching him?

Because I believe Steve Donaghue is not exaggerating my reading has slowed to a scatter thought trickle. I have three generations of descendants on the planet. One is the sweetest little three-year old Jew. If I'm done, I leave nothing on the table. But what about them? Sheetrock Tabernacle plus is due in my mail next week. Will they help my despair or what else you got?

Apart from anything my books might contain, the best I’ve got, P.C., is to advise you to keep breathing, by which, literally, inhaling and exhaling is meant, and relax (in my case the shoulders) and feel your feet planted (in my case the heels).
Oh wait, that’s not all. In my experience, just because evil is plotted, doesn’t mean it’s successful, so do not fall into the publicized delusion that it must be. 😉
Oh, and this one is a commonplace: in any given negotiating scenario, you always hold more power than you think that you do. (I’ve never applied this one well myself, but believe it.)

It's been a few years since I read the Golden Notebook (in that same edition). It's wild and frustrating and difficult but worth a try. It's also essentially five different books interleaved .
Who said writers write novels because they can't write short stories and they write short stories who can't write poetry? Maybe Dave.

Found a Doris Lessing short story on my shelf; it was about her family's travel through Russia in 1924. Consider her writing if you need a palate cleanser from Runciman's dense text. This story cleansed my rough travels through our Charlotte's French Revolutionary Europe.
Our Charlotte has advice: "If every man should consider his fellow man as a brother, the tie is surely strengthened between unhappy men." She told me to tell you.
@@PatriciaCrabtree-wm8xd Somewhere I have a small short story collection by Lessing. Given the mixed reviews _Golden_ seems to be getting I may read the intros, give it a glance, then restore it to the neighborhood box. Gosh darn I need to find a novel by Charlotte Br - - I mean Smith.

This was really interesting. I am trying to learn more about American politics. I admit I know little about it. A fundamental thing I fail to comprehend is how, with a population the size of the US, the two main Presidential candidates are old enough to realistically die during the term of office. Surely there are younger, able people? This week we had an election in the UK. Our oldest MP is 80 years old, the youngest is 22. But averagely the age of our politicians is below our retirement age.

I too have seen this slide in Presidential, Congressional, and SCOTUS integrity and methods in my life since I first opposed the Viet Nam war in the ‘60s. It’s been depressing to see, but, as you say, perfectly clear to anyone watching with a clear eye. My two little grandchildren are going to need every ounce of courage, intelligence, compassion, and luck they can find.

Thsnks for reminding me that I was once brave when I helped organize a war protest in New Haven, CT in 2003. I thought the Vietnam veterans should have joined us to warn the kids about the special horror of sham wars. Am still ashamed of my generation for that and getting us to the edge of this cliff. I think your hummingbird was coming after your red bee balm bergamot monarda didyma, a lot of names for a great smell. Rub the top of it and take a whiff.
@@PatriciaCrabtree-wm8xd That was the wonderful smell we drove with from Aurora - not wanting to cut them back because we hope for a seeding later on.
@@davidnovakreadspoetry I think they need no care. Leave them up all winter, rub the seed heads, smell your fingers, wait for summer and your hummingbird, rub and repeat.
@@PatriciaCrabtree-wm8xd Last year we bought bee balm from the same woman who blessed us with this year’s bonanza, and we have a robust stand in the back - so that is probably exactly what drew the hummer. I just spent the morning digging in a border to impede water runoff on streetside. That’s it for the day - give me some Runciman!
