    I have been thinking along the same lines. These are troublesome times and voices need to be heard. Mine might be small. Enough small voices might make a roar. I might loose a few subscribers when I speak my mind but I think it needs to be done.

    Because I believe Steve Donaghue is not exaggerating my reading has slowed to a scatter thought trickle. I have three generations of descendants on the planet. One is the sweetest little three-year old Jew. If I'm done, I leave nothing on the table. But what about them? Sheetrock Tabernacle plus is due in my mail next week. Will they help my despair or what else you got?

      Apart from anything my books might contain, the best I’ve got, P.C., is to advise you to keep breathing, by which, literally, inhaling and exhaling is meant, and relax (in my case the shoulders) and feel your feet planted (in my case the heels).

    It's been a few years since I read the Golden Notebook (in that same edition). It's wild and frustrating and difficult but worth a try. It's also essentially five different books interleaved .

    Found a Doris Lessing short story on my shelf; it was about her family's travel through Russia in 1924. Consider her writing if you need a palate cleanser from Runciman's dense text. This story cleansed my rough travels through our Charlotte's French Revolutionary Europe.

    This was really interesting. I am trying to learn more about American politics. I admit I know little about it. A fundamental thing I fail to comprehend is how, with a population the size of the US, the two main Presidential candidates are old enough to realistically die during the term of office. Surely there are younger, able people? This week we had an election in the UK. Our oldest MP is 80 years old, the youngest is 22. But averagely the age of our politicians is below our retirement age.

    I too have seen this slide in Presidential, Congressional, and SCOTUS integrity and methods in my life since I first opposed the Viet Nam war in the ‘60s. It’s been depressing to see, but, as you say, perfectly clear to anyone watching with a clear eye. My two little grandchildren are going to need every ounce of courage, intelligence, compassion, and luck they can find.

    Thsnks for reminding me that I was once brave when I helped organize a war protest in New Haven, CT in 2003. I thought the Vietnam veterans should have joined us to warn the kids about the special horror of sham wars. Am still ashamed of my generation for that and getting us to the edge of this cliff.     I think your hummingbird was coming after your red bee balm bergamot monarda didyma, a lot of names for a great smell. Rub the top of it and take a whiff.

      @@PatriciaCrabtree-wm8xd Last year we bought bee balm from the same woman who blessed us with this year’s bonanza, and we have a robust stand in the back - so that is probably exactly what drew the hummer. I just spent the morning digging in a border to impede water runoff on streetside. That’s it for the day - give me some Runciman!
