Old Man On A Bike
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 12 พ.ค. 2006
Follow the journey of a “senior cyclist” who pairs up recreational road rides for training with long distance bike touring. In addition to documenting my bike rides on video, I will also address gear and exercise that specifically addresses the needs of this ”old man on a bike” who loves to explore roads and rail trails that are off the beaten track… camping along the way as much as possible.
Off The Bike - A Minor Nagging Injury Has Me Hiking My Butt Off
Welcome To My Hike!
When I can’t physically go out for a bike ride, a suitable substitution must be found that does not over stress my painful shoulder. I have found there is nothing quite like a good day-hike to get the heart and lungs working as designed. And when you have a short woodsy trail literally 100 yards from your back door I say… GO FOR IT! EVERYDAY.
The Windswept Ridge nature preserve is located in Essex, Connecticut and is managed by the Essex Land Trust; a very well marked and maintained set of trails. It’s comprised of a series of loops and this video takes us on a portion of, what I call, the big loop that includes the Yellow, Red, and Green trails. This option is less than two miles total including the distance to and from my house. The main trailhead off of Plans Road in Essex is a great place to begin your hike - clockwise or counterclockwise - completely up to you.
This video is intended to give you a quick glimpse of what is in store for you during if you decide to complete a full loop of the Windswept Ridge nature preserve. For those who view this and swear off of the trail because of the climbing and the areas of roots, rocks, and mud I traversed, fear not… the nice wide (yellow) main trail extends from the Trailhead north for about 1/2 mile for an nice down and back workout… and you are free to take as many reps as you can stand.
I have placed links below this description for the digital Windswept Ridge brochure which includes a detailed map.

Yep… I Love Cycling In Granby - Part 2
มุมมอง 244ปีที่แล้ว
John F. Kennedy has been attributed with the phrase “Nothing compares to the simple pleasure of riding a bike.” This phrase defines my cycling experience on this smoke shrouded afternoon in and around Granby. The formal rail trail (La Route Verte 1) in combination with locally developed regional trails has left me basking in the pleasure of cycling in this area. The Granby area is a little know...
Quebec Day 3 - Trail Sculptures Of The Granby Region (Part 1)

Welcome to my 3rd ride in the southern portion of Quebec - specifically the Granby region. Noted as a major intersection of Canadian cycling trails Velo Verte Routes 1 and 4 cyclists will truly enjoy the beauty of the trails and associated cycling infrastructure. “L'Estriade” is a well-known Granby recreational trail segment and is a family destination for locals and visitors of all ages. In ad...
Quebec Day 2 - Off To Roxton Falls On Quebec’s Rail Trails
มุมมอง 262ปีที่แล้ว
Welcome to Day 2 Spoiler Alert… At the end of Day 1 my Canadian cycling plans were falling apart as I was informed the Yamaska National Park could not accommodate me for more than one night unless I was willing to go through a process - pack up my camp, leave the park, and then return and hope a cycling site is still available. This would require me to carry all of my gear each day as I explore...
Quebec Day 1 - Bad News At The National Park
มุมมอง 281ปีที่แล้ว
Due to some lingering health concerns and a horrible summer of rain and forest fire smoke in Canada, a full blown bike tour of Quebec was not in the cards for me so I developed a plan based on what I call hub/spoke touring. It goes as follows… drive to an interesting location, stow the car, ride to a camping site, and stay there for four or five days. Then, pack up and get in your car and reloc...

My daughter (“step” though she may be) is very special but lives oh so far away. She always visits a couple of times per year and we both look forward to the rare but simple joy of a mellow bike ride together. Sadly we only get to do this once or twice during the Connecticut bike riding season. Invariably we often head to one of the beaches somewhere along Connecticut’s southern coastline. As J...
Climbing A Baby Mountain
มุมมอง 213ปีที่แล้ว
Hardly A Mountain… But A Good Training Start Self-supported bike touring with a 25 pound load sometimes presents me with short steep hills - especially here in New England. To prepare to take my bike up these hills it helps to find some terrain that supports the process of “going up.” The short but steep climb up Meriden Mountain is perfect and close to home. Unlike other local hills, there is ...
Does The Ortlieb Bag Jiggle On the Jones Bar?
มุมมอง 492ปีที่แล้ว
Simple and straightforward - After watching one of my Jones Bar vidéos, a subscriber wondered (rightfully) if the Ortlieb bag hanging off the front of my Priority 600 bounced around and jiggled on rough roads. I just took a ride up a small mountain and… what goes up, must come down. Here is a video of a portion of my descent down from visiting Castle Craig in Meriden, Connecticut. This hill was...
Fire Roads, Smoke, & Flowers On My Priority 600

Welcome To My Ride - Part 2 Smoke Ride As I began to feel the impact of the Canadian wild fire smoke I recalled being cautioned by the healthcare experts about being outside; so mid-ride I decided to make an adjustment and cut the ride short by six or so miles. Instead of going to the far western entrance and riding the entire series of fire roads through the forest, I headed in via the souther...
Wheezing Up A Hill To Check Out Unbelievable Stone Walls
มุมมอง 201ปีที่แล้ว
Welcome To My Ride This was supposed to be my first mountain ride… up Meriden Mountain to Castle Craig - 4.1 miles and 982 feet. Not a big mountain but steep in places. I woke up to a serious smoke situation caused by out-of-control forest fires in Canada. The Canadian smoke was driving formal government health cautions throughout the US Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states. Due to the smoke I opt...
Rambling About The Roads Of My Youth Part 2

Welcome To A Hometown Memory Ride (Part 2) This second part of our 20 mile memory ride takes in some special settings from my past. The purpose of this memory ride is to refresh my memories from back when, as a kid, I roamed the roads of my home town of Wallingford. I got a kid’s eye view of life from the seat of my bike. As 60 years have flowed over the dam, so riding the same roads of my yout...
Back To My Childhood by Bike - Part 1

Welcome To Part 1 Of My 2023 Memory Ride! After being away from Connecticut for 20 years my permanent return from Virginia in 2018 is allowing me to explore this small, but beautiful, state. A big part of this has me reintroducing myself to my old hometown - Wallingford, Connecticut. Last year my focus was visiting my two childhood homes and I folded in the homes of those high school classmates...
Part 2 - The Airline Trail Can Be Really Messy Out East
มุมมอง 454ปีที่แล้ว
WELCOME TO MY VIDEO: - The Ride Out Of Putnam - My exploration of the extreme eastern segment of the airline trail was almost thwarted by trail conditions but I slogged (literally) through the water and mud and continued northeast to the Rhode Island border. From the point where I was momentarily stopped by the flooded trail to the border, the ride was very pleasant yet uneventful. I was impres...
