  • Welcome to Day 2
Spoiler Alert… At the end of Day 1 my Canadian cycling plans were falling apart as I was informed the Yamaska National Park could not accommodate me for more than one night unless I was willing to go through a process - pack up my camp, leave the park, and then return and hope a cycling site is still available. This would require me to carry all of my gear each day as I explored the local cycling in the Granby region of Quebec.
Prior to my trip north I did an internet search on Canadian policies on National Park camping - few to any guidelines to be found addressing cyclists. As a last resort, I communicated with the National Park via e-mail well in advance of my trip regarding the policy of cyclists camping at the park. They indicated that no reservation was required for cyclists but they would appreciate contact the morning of my arrival. It was “my bad” in not stating more clearly that I was doing an in depth tour of the Granby/Yamaska area and would require 4 or 5 nights of camping.
On the day of my arrival at Yamaska I was confronted with the “one night only” rule. While they were pleasant and understood my dilemma, the Ranger on duty was a “rules are rules” person and would not discuss alternatives… except to direct me to off site camp grounds (most catering to RVs). I understood but was disappointed.
So this video begins with me fully packing up my camp, loading up my bike, with the intention of taking a short ride to Roxton Falls and then attempting to get one more night at the park. As I approached the desk to see if I could make this final reservation I was met with someone who had been briefed on my circumstance. While she confirmed that they could only take a single reservation at a time, she also said it has been a poor camping season for all - including cyclists. Many of the cycling camp sites have gone empty. She indicated we could follow the rule of taking a single reservation each day but I could leave my camp set up for my entire time in the region. She had hoped I had not packed up my bike for the day… sadly I had it fully packed. So we made a reservation for that evening and I rode back and set my camp back up. Thereafter, every morning I rode down to “The Discovery Center” and made my reservation for the evening… it all worked. Sadly, as I would later find out, this same procedure was not acceptable at the next National Park on my itinerary… but that’s another story.
So this video begins with me getting a very late start due to camp tear down and setup. My intent of this video is to show you the cycling trails within the National Park and then the Velo Verte 4 rail trail to the sleepy little town of Roxton Falls.
It was a beautiful ride and I hope you enjoy it.
