Fire Roads, Smoke, & Flowers On My Priority 600

  • Welcome To My Ride - Part 2 Smoke Ride
As I began to feel the impact of the Canadian wild fire smoke I recalled being cautioned by the healthcare experts about being outside; so mid-ride I decided to make an adjustment and cut the ride short by six or so miles. Instead of going to the far western entrance and riding the entire series of fire roads through the forest, I headed in via the southern entrance… a very steep gravel road (Old County) that dove down into the State Forest. Unfortunately I didn’t get the exciting descent on video as I was using a new magnetic chest mount and for some unexplained technical reason the picture recorded as white with no sound. I opted not to re-video my grand entrance as that would require a difficult climb back out with a U-Turn and an attempt to repeat the video… didn’t make sense based on conditions.
Three things to note about the ride through the forest - (1) the weird color of the light filtering through the smoke and then the tree canopy, (2) the beauty of the blooming Mountain Laurel - Connecticut’s State flower, and (3) the performance of my Priority 600 bike on the dirt and gravel roads. The video of my forest ride and then the short ride back to my start point was just that… an uneventful but strange ride through this smokey environment.
Nothing too exciting except a bike ride that was good for my old bones… not so good for my throat and lungs.

The smoky skies give these episodes a unique look, for sure.
Nice to see the 600 on the gravel.

I am looking forward to my current tires wearing out so I can get something with a bit more tread. This Forest has a couple of hills that routinely make that rear wheel spin. So far I have not had to dismount and hope I never do as spinning a rear tire and jumping off the bike does not seem like it would have a tidy conclusion.

@@cc103acs I'm sure not, but TH-cam would like to see it! LOL
I'm not sure how long your tires will last... just get the replacements. You can always remount the originals if necessary.

@@leonfisher Back in the days when I was all tubes that was fairly easy. With tubeless, while not difficult, it is just really messy. And I was pretty shocked at the effort it took just to slip both tire beads into the rim. So I will only change when necessary. As for TH-cam bike falls, every time I go up a steep hill and see myself going from 4MPH to 3 MPH I can’t help but wonder at what speed does the bike fall over like in a bad cartoon.

I understand the Pinion has a huge range. How do you find the spread between gears? Comfortable?

The C-12 that I have on the Priority is fine and the spacing between gears is identical through the shifting range and is very comfortable. That said, as a former roadie, I would like to be able to have a couple more gears for downhill and on-the-flat. The gearing for going up hill under a load, however, is perfect. Comfortable is a good way to put it… very much so.
