    Thanks for this fascinating history of Marttiini knives. I bought my first "Lynx" model in 1966, when I was a scout. I had it until not so long ago, when my Dad, who was getting confused towards the end of his life, decided to donate all my kit to the "Cat's Protection" charity shop. Luckily, I have several other, more up to date models which he did not give away.

    I most like the variation of the Marttiini models. You get a puukko in nearly 20 different ways...different sheath, blade, handle, Material, more modern or traditional. Many nordic brands have different sizes, stainless or carbon steel but they almost look the same.

    Lovely played piano introduction to go along with song birds of your area of Finland. I have used the fillet knives of Marttiini most of my life, there are currently three in the kitchen knife drawer that get regular use in food preparation in our home. They were imported to North America but the same company that brought the Rapala lures across the Atlantic Ocean. They were always a good value. I fillet many hundreds (maybe thousands) of fish with those knives. Thank you for the heart felt review of one of your first loves in life. I enjoyed this video very much. I particularly like, what I think of as a birds head on Puukko handles, it makes it easy to pull the Puukko from the sheath with cold, wet, bloody or slimy hands as does the Sammi style of handle.

    • @OldForestBushcraft
      @OldForestBushcraft 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I also have still one fillet from them. Over 30 yrs old. I think they were the most sold knives of Marttiini in general (though Ilves was the most sold puukko). They sold them a lot of them in the states I think. Funny thing, my parents lived very near the Rapala headquarters in Vääksy village by the lake Päijänne. Visited often the museum. Going there this summer also for a fishing trip. Thanx for watching, and sharing your experiences with Marttiini. Have a great day! 🌲🔪🌲

    Great video. Your thoughts on handles have really got my brain ticking. As far as steels are concerned, we are very privileged to have so many excellent options, but honestly they are given too much emphasis due to marketing. The handles are definitely lower in importance for most buyers, but as you said the handle is how we interact with the knife. I like natural materials like wood, bone, stag and buffalo horn, but I've never tried a birch bark handle. Do you have any opinions on octagonal wooden handles? I have heard that an octagonal (or 5 or 6 facets) handle requires less force to grip than a round or oval handle, thus it is less fatiguing. Some carving knives have faceted handles. I may try making one in the style of Peter Kovacs or Woodsmans Finest here on TH-cam with a simple Laurin carbon blade. All the best.

    • @OldForestBushcraft
      @OldForestBushcraft 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Never tested those handles. Could be nice! Its with the constant use of knives, the importance of handle grows and of supersteels lessens. Just my observatorio. And I do like my 3vs or whatnot. Thanx for watching, have a great day!

    I think why we have not seen much on this particular model of BRK is it is a "First Production Run" where they only make a certain number to "test the waters" and see how it is recieved by the public. If it passes the smell test, they will make more! From your review, I believe they will!

      Okey! So that's why some models just comes and goes... I have to say now after years of using barkies imo they are at their best with these types of slicy convex blades. Bird & Trout, hunting knife cross overs etc. Just my opinion. This has many elements that comes together nicely: 4 fingers grip for small edc, kind of nicely rounded micarta handle, NOT over thick blade, very nimble, and an SO slicy! I think its a winner, but ofc just my opinion.. Thanx for watching!🌲🔪🌲
