Some of my Puukko’s and blades were made by Alpo and Olavi Kemppainen of Kuhmo, others by Hackman that were designed by Tapio Wirkkala. Oh wow, you have some nice puukkos! Tapio Wirkkala puukkos are getting very expensive at the moment (check ebay). Yeah, birchbark puukos were one of the oldest. Theres lot of them in our National Museum in Helsinki. Some veeery old. Great material! I've heard there were lots of immigrants from Finland in Minnesota. Very interesting. I visited Swedish, Norwegian and Finnish Lapland in 2019, went to Utsjoki to see the famous Teno wooden River Boats, visited with the man and wife that were building them. We then drove and camped our way South to Inari, Rovaniemi and Torino then back to Doratea where my Swedish friend lives. I loved every minute and kilometer of beautiful Finland. I visited the Winter Market in Jokkmokk Sweden in 2014, the people were amazed that a man from Alaska would go half way around the world to go to another really cold place, but I really liked seeing the Saami culture with my own eyes not pictures and words in a book. I bought many Tapio Wirkkala knives when they were new on the market when they were selling for 30 American dollars, I wish I had bought more. I think I have two bigger ones and one little one. I gave my friends some as gifts it was in my mind at the time the finest knife I had owned. Many Puukko’s latter I know they are really good but not the finest. Hand forged Puukko from silver steel is. I too like to fly fish, especially with dry flies that I tie and bamboo fly rods. You should visit me or me you, fly fish away the day, talk about knives around the campfire at night drinking tea.

I really like this knife. It's the exact style I aspire to for my own knife making projects. It's a simple knife but the quality & attention to detail are at a high level. I notice the thick bolsters and the uniformity of the layers of birch bark. The handle shape is perfection. And the sheath compliments the knife - plain, yet elegant. You have good taste! I tried layered birch bark and it's very difficult to prepare the bark to the high standard as shown on your knife. Every piece looks uniform, no cracks, thickness variation or sap inclusions. The quality of the knife is elevated by its honest lack of ornamentation. I think I found Kari Saastamoinen's website - gonna keep an eye on his output. Cheers,@@OldForestBushcraft
I understand exactly what you meant by feeling at home in the forest. There's a smallish parcel of public land not too far from where I live. On the surface, it's nothing special, fairly flat, with dense stands of pine trees interspersed with open areas of sagebrush. To me, it has become a refuge of sorts, since there's almost never anyone else there.
Sounds lovely! Those places are important. Im honsetly sometimes amazed how few people I see in "my" forests and lakes. I sometimes really have this feeling am I the only one who has seen this. Beautiful. I have a custom puukko from Saku Honkilahti that is very similar to yours. I love the knife. It’s got the best handle of all my knives. Difficult to beat an oval birch bark handle.

Beautiful knife. The question of kydex vs leather is often determined y environmental considerations. Where I live we have 90% humidity most of the time and leather soaks up that moisture.

I'm not a big fan of the Wood Jewel design. The handle isn't to my liking personally. The quality... Its ok. Eräpuu makes a nice birch bark puukko for about 80 euros.

Looks as if you found your “Grail”...The knife that will pass through many miles with you, and when you’re at the end of the road you can say “This is my knife”. But, if you settle down with your chosen one, you will have to let go of all other potential “wives...I mean knives” and stop playing the field. But, But...lol
Growing up with Yellowstone in my backyard, my grail is a Randall 5-6 Camp and Trail knife with leather stacked handle and brass guard and end cap. Funny how you’re environment can shape you...

I agree with you. I think the Canadian Belt Knife was designed to combine elements of a typical hunting blade with a skinning blade into one knife. There also some lore about the designer (D. H. Russell) wanting to create a knife with unique "Canadian" identity - so this is possibly why it has such a recognizable distinctive shape. Possibly stylized to sell more knives? They certainly have small odd shaped handles when compared to Puukko. Just an unsolicited comment/opinion - I'm Canadian, own about 12 Grohmann knives (original maker of the Canadian Belt Knife) and I used to live in Nova Scotia and visit the knife factory regularly.
