Humans have a long history with knives. For eons the knife was a tool of supreme significance. Knives are a part of our evolution. There is every reason to encourage a healthy bond with knives. It awakens something that is real and also ancient. Erämaan kutsu.
I wasn going to buy a Skrama as I have enough large knives and I also used to carry a hatchet. I saw the 200 second hand for a price that I couldn't refuse. It's now my main large cutting tool. I really should be carrying a leuku with where I live😂. Oulankajoki looks very familiar in those photos. Nice video Llari.
I will just have to get the 200, I see it being much more usefull than 240 (although I love it as a chopper in the garden). Im really liking Leukus at the moment. Though may not have an ideal handle ergos etc. theres just something, the lightness, for a blade that size very nimble in hand. Kuusamo has stole my heart during the years. Maybe all the fishing trips there during the years. (Though I admit its pretty crowded nowadays). Kuusamo, Muotkatunturi wilderness and whole Inari areas have become kind of special places in Lapland. I’ ve just ended up visiting those places a lot with my father in the 90s. There is that Beautiful Lrg Northern Hunter again and I am looking forward to owning one myself this Holiday Season. As I had mentioned- I am enamoured with Large Bellied Knife designs. It performs in everything I put them through with exception of the grind. Scandi is more wood oriented, saber is more everything tasks, and flat being the better skinner/slicer (less hard work use). In light of your knowledge shared with me of the Puukko knife history, DBK using it, showing no edge damage following batonning through bricks, being stood on with full body weight, and being shot at: I had ordered (4) Terävä Jääkäripuukko 110 from Varusteleka. 1 for myself- but, also for my Son, Dad, and Grandfather. Yeah, realized that I have include the LNH in this video, because its not only my most versitale blade, its also a knife I would most definitely take to multi days hiking trips to Lapland, Companied with a larger blade. And Specially if I would do Fishing! The Terävä puukko is one hell of a tough knife. And In that price point imo almost unparallel. @@OldForestBushcraft Thanks for the suggestion and I will take a look at it. Yeah, I was interested in getting a tank of a knife. I wanted a Puukko too. I love my expensive LTWKs and Bark Rivers and don't want to have to maintain too often. So, I saw the crazy results from extreme use by various youtubers and decided "If you need a reliable survival knife; the Terava puukko would stand up to the task." Very happy with it for the price already! My JX2 Companion still beats it at the feathers- but, for the blade shape and grind; I am very surprised by it's feathering performance. Of course, I also prefer 2 knives in the woods. A larger "beater" knife and a smaller tasks one! :) Makes all chores much easier and a joy compared to a 1 tool option.
That´s a great combo! I always have a two knife combo myself and it´s like yours, a "puukko" 7-10 cm blade and a "leuku" 13-16 cm blade style knife combo. One of my favourite for hiking is the M95 Peltonen along with a "Mora companion Spark" with a light folding saw (Silky F180 or Bacho laplander). This combo is perfect for summer, during winter I usually bring some heavier tools as well when making fire but the "leuku" "puukko" combo is still coming along. I discovered the leuku thanks to kuukkeliBushcraft, i got the erapuu one and i love it, i carry it with my old roselli hunter 100, and they make a nice combo ❤

Totally agree on two knife carrying, (or more if you need them!) I love my Kauhavan Puukkopaja double leuku set, covers most eventualities when I'm de-limbing my small area of trees or tidying up coppicing. Good video.

They are very useful indeed - blades by Laurin Metalli, very sharp and they can do almost everything. (I haven't tried felling a tree with them - yet!)@@OldForestBushcraft
Use your hard steel blades, as back ups. For example, use a Victorinox, or a Morakniv, and have a Lionstel M4 as a back up. If you collect wild edible or use your hunting knife for dressing animals, then choose either Ballbearing steel, or CPM 3V. My favorite system, when I go hiking, collecting wild edibles, camping etc, is the Victorinox Rucksack and a Manly Patriot.
Noce combo. Great video idea! I've been carrying my sissipuukko lately. Its a big knife but it's also a great carver/bushcrafter. Its one of the most versatile knives I own I think. I love it. Its my current one knife choice and it rides on my haversack or pack. Did I say I love my sissipuukko?!? I often have three knives with me outdoors: large SAK folder (with a saw) my 'bushcraft' knife (which changes often) and sometimes a larger knife. My larger knife is the skrama 200. I also love that thing.
Just Cant go wrong with the Sissipuukko! Imo near perfect hiking knife. One thing to note is that although this is My setup at the moment, it also changes. Which is great, Love variations! I have few larger knives coming in that cant wait to test them out. Good discussion! I always have a pocket knife on me. If I'm hunting, I usually have a Buck 110 folding hunter on my belt, plus one or two fixed-blade knives in my pack. I like to keep the right side open for a handgun holster. If I'm just mucking about in the woods, I have the same pocket knife, plus one or another knife on my belt and another in my pack, along with a folding saw.

Beautiful Combo! The last pair I had out was Fallkniven’s A1 & F1. My combo’s tend to get larger in the winter months. Was using a Bark River Bravo 1.5LT and Gunny EXT-1 both in desert ironwood, brass pins and black liners during our fall fishing months. Summer was mostly a Bark River Aurora II and BR Puukko that I’m still trying to get use too...

I would like to hear more of your thoughts on developing a bond with your knife. I think you must begin with a quality knife, suited to your environment, the handle must fit your hand well. From there a lot of use will buiild your skills and attachment. Then again, what do I know?

Your knife does change with the seasons, so true. I carry two pocketknives all year, regardless of the season. A Swiss Army knife, for a simple blade and a variety of tools and lately I have added a Stanley 10-049 as my beater blade, or with extra, new blade carried in the handle, a scary sharp option with a quick change. Max flexibility, minimal cost or weight. In addition, I have several belt knives, a Mora Kansbol, used mainly on the boat, so not so many tears if it hits the water, a Mora classic for light shore duties, fire start, cooking and saunas, and my Terava Puukko, 110 for rough jobs.

I've noticed Issakki Jarvenpaa makes several double knife sets - 2 knives in 1 sheath. I liked the idea so much that I purchased parts to make my own copy of the Issakki Trekking Set 5618. Making my own set adds to the bond with the knives. So my question is...are double knife sets commonly used in Finland? I also noticed that Kainuun Puukko makes double and even triple Tommi sets.
Wow, making your own knife most certainly creates a strong bond, would imagine! Those definitely are a thing. I never used one my self. But there is a long tradition behind it. Since I'm in Canada, I have many Grohmann knives (original maker of the belt knife) but I still think a scandi grind Puukko in 80CRv2 makes a better overall knife for the forest. And separatistic. Kind of rich also. Many times in history, theyve tried to separate themself from rest of Finland. "We dont need Helsinki" mentality. And of all the regions of Finland the most associated with Puukkos. I was once there and in Kauhava was a Baar called Puukko bar. It was decorated all over with Puukkos, lol😂. Did a small video of the Puukkojunkkarit (knife rebels). If you're interested. Sorry my ramblings, I would have become certainly a historian if I wouldn't have become musician.
You need different tools for different jobs. The season's will also dictate the type of tools needed. I also still go by the rule - two is one, one is none. I always have a pocket knife and a sheath knife in the bush, if its more than 24 hrs, I also have an axe and a saw if weight is not too much trouble.

Yes, Bark River has their issues. I’ve had good luck with them on pre-order’s. Purchasing after the run release has been hit or miss.
