But after Vieuxtemp's death, Brandus received autograph manuscripts from the family archive, which they used to publish the works. Unfortunately, these are not accessible now; the archive now belongs to Chappell. I asked there, you can't do any research there...

@@olafadler6497 Well my 2 cents... While there are "normal" marches in 3/4, especially on the british isles, it is extreamll rare in classical music. The trio in Radetzky March by Strauss was originally in 3/4 but Strauss rewrote that melody to 2/4 when he incorporated it in the march. And I can't remember any funeral march in 3/4 either in classical nor in folk. So my guess is that Kefer added or forged the title. There are a lot more examples of that practise than of marches in 3/4 :D

It was transcribed 1854 by John MacLeod during the Crimean War from "La Tua Danza Sì Leggiera," a chorus part in the third act of Gioachino Rossini's 1829 opera Guglielmo Tell (William Tell). But only 1 percent that Vieuxtemps knew such a thing....

Il più grande merito di Vieuxtemps è quello di aver messo le nuove conquiste tecniche di un Paganini al servizio dell'espressione musicale. Lui stesso espresse questa preoccupazione: "Dopo aver studiato il concerto per violino di Beethoven, la musica di Spohr e di altri, mi sono chiesto se non ci fosse un modo per unire la musica seria e la tecnica violinistica moderna, i suoi grandi effetti, la sua nobiltà e la sua potenza, per creare in questo modo un genere nuovo e più elevato". Credo che ci sia riuscito...

Ha senz'altro ragione! Le opere di Vieuxtemps hanno un bellissimo rapporto con i maestri del passato (molto bella la citazione!) pure sono ricchi di un estro e un'immaginazione nuova, una fantasticheria che rimane sempre del tutto imprevedibile e che pure torna sempre al punto, senza allentare mai il limpido appiombo della forma...

Yes, it is an unpublished cadenza by the soloist's father, Albert Markov. We had long discussions - with Alexander Markov whether a cadenza should be played at all, and with the publisher whether it should then be published. Alexander Markov decided in favor of the cadenza and Edition Kunzelmann against it. Personally, I think that Vieuxtemps did not intend a cadenza. However, the cadenza recorded here captures Vieuxtemps' style so excellently that it is very good to listen to.

I really like this romance too. It is a bit "stormy" in the middle part. I think that Vieuxtemps did not think of Venice here (as a typical "Gondellied"). My theory: it is the memory of a stormy day on the Atlantic during the return trip from America. But only a theory...

@hadiabera4068 Philippe Koch ist nicht mein Schüler. Er ist Konzertmeister im Philharmonischen Orchester Luxemburg. Er liebt Vieuxtemps gleichermaßen wie auch ich und hat sehr viele schöne Aufnahmen veröffentlicht.

Vieuxtemps is my favorite composer. I have done a lot of research on his life. For me, he represents the ideal combination of violinistic virtuosity and genuine, deep emotion. Of course, the Romances op. 7 (and 8) are especially emotional because they represent his first and most important love.

@@olafadler6497 To speak of a student and friend of Vieuxtemps's, Eugene Ysaye, I believe he was born at the wrong time/Age to write music. I am a great grand-daughter (70 yr.) of his so was compelled to listen to some of his compositions. Most of it is un-listenable but quite virtuosic (Is that even a word?). I believe his music is often included in young performers' repertory just because it is so darn difficult to play so, if you can play Ysaye, you can do anything!

@@butterflybeatles Wonderful that you have a personal relationship with Ysaÿe. Ysaÿe was probably Vieuxtemps' best student. He completely understood Vieuxtemps' artistic concern when he said, "There is no run for run's sake, everything sings!" Nevertheless, Ysaÿe's music is probably more difficult to understand than Vieuxtemps'. I like to have Ysaÿe play when the students are older.

Herzlichen Dank für die Rückmeldung - für die aus meiner Sicht keine Nachsicht nötig ist. Tatsächlich spielt Gina schneller, als in den meisten anderen Aufnahmen zu hören ist. Das Tempo ist aus meiner Sicht eine Frage des Alters und des Charakters. Viele andere Aufnahmen zeigen die „tanzenden Gerippe“ am Anfang eher distanziert, emotional neutraler, sie wirken dann auf eigene Art unwirklich, bedrohlich. Bei Gina ist sofort (ab 0:30) zu hören, dass sie noch ein Herz haben, Schmerz empfinden darüber, dass sie nur für die eine Stunde mal aus dem Grab dürfen. Neutraler wird sie erst, wenn bei 1:53 die toten Musiktheorie-Lehrer mit ihrer trockenen Fuge aus dem Grab hervorkommen… Sie spielt sozusagen emotional direkter, es passt gut zu ihr.

Markov and the Monte Carlo Orchestra and with H. Avanesyan and the Liege Orchestra: I like much more the active, dramatic orchestra from Liege. For my taste the Monte Carlo orchestra is a bit too "soft". Although I like A. Markov's playing very much, I therefore prefer the Belgian recording. Which recording do you prefer?

Ich finde es faszinierend, dass im Vergleich mit anderen Werken Vieuxtemps' gerade dieses Air varié des höchstens 13jährigen Komponisten von der emotionalen Wirkung her für Sie am nächsten an Bachs unübertreffbare h-Moll-Messe kommt. Vielleicht ist die Ernsthaftigkeit Vieuxtemps spürbar, der sehr viele Fassungen dieses Werkes schrieb bis es seiner Dankbarkeit für seinen Mäzen H. Genin entsprach? Mir persönlich geht es eher so bei den Beethoven-Variationen, bei denen ich aus jedem Takt Vieuxtemps tiefen Respekt vor Beethovens klassischer, edler Linienführung heraushöre (gerade auch in den virtuosen Teilen). Aber Musik ist auch deshalb so schön, weil sie uns ganz unterschiedlich erreichen kann.
