Vieuxtemps widmete die Voix intimes Mathilde Lejeune, zu der er eine unerfüllte Liebe empfand. Die Inhalte der einzelnen Stücke beschreiben den Wandel seiner inneren Einstellung zu ihr. Die Uraufführung der Voix intimes op. 45 fand am 8. November 1875 mit dem italienischen Violinisten Guido Papini statt. Vieuxtemps konnte aufgrund seines ersten Schlaganfalls im Jahr 1873 nicht mehr selbst spielen. Auch am 28. Februar 1876 im Salon des Hauses Vieuxtemps in der Rue Chaptal 31 in Paris spielte Guido Papini gemeinsam mit Anton Rubinstein (Klavier) die Voix intimes. Fast zwei Jahre später, am 15. Januar 1878 spielte der erst 19jährige Eugène Ysaÿe die Voix intimes ebenfalls im Salon Vieuxtemps in der Rue Chaptal 31. Vieuxtemps selbst sagte über sein op. 45: "Ich habe versucht, alle technischen Schwierigkeiten zu vermeiden, so dass nur der edle Stil, die Würde und die Reinheit der Gefühle zum Vorschein kommen."
Vieuxtemps dedicated the Voix intimes to Mathilde Lejeune, for whom he felt an unrequited love. The contents of the individual pieces describes the change in his inner attitude towards her. The premiere of the Voix intimes op. 45 took place on November 8, 1875 with the Italian violinist Guido Papini. Vieuxtemps was unable to play himself due to his first stroke in 1873. Also on February 28, 1876, in the salon of Vieuxtemps' house at 31 rue Chaptal in Paris, Guido Papini played the Voix intimes together with Anton Rubinstein (piano). Almost two years later, on January 15, 1878, Eugène Ysaÿe, only 19 years old, played the Voix intimes, also in the Vieuxtemps salon at 31 rue Chaptal. Vieuxtemps himself said of his op. 45: "I attempt to avoid all technical difficulties, so that only nobility of style, and loftiness, and purity of feeling should be brought to light."
