Die Romanze "Souvenir d'Amitié" von Henri Vieuxtemps gehört zu seinen eher rätselhaften Werken. Hofmeisters Monatsberichte vermerken im März 1868 die Herausgabe des Werkes durch Schuberth & Co. in Leipzig. Das im Video verwendete Exemplar von Schuberth & Co. New York gibt als Jahr der Herausgabe 1867 an. Vieuxemps war zu dieser Zeit nicht in Amerika. Bisher gibt es keine Hinweise darauf, dass die Opuszahl 8bis mit Vieuxtemps abgestimmt wurde. Vermutlich wollte der Verleger so einen Zusammenhang mit den erfolgreichen, aber viel äteren Romanzen op. 8 herstellen. Schuberth & Co. hatte bereits zuvor mehrfach die Vieuxtempssche Opuszählung für Marketing-Zwecke über den Haufen geworfen. Das bei Troupenas in Paris bereits als op. 8 erschienene Violinkonzert fis-Moll erschien bei Schuberth später als Violinkonzert Nr. 2, op. 19. Die bei Troupenas bereits als 7 Romanzen op. 7 erschienenen Werke wurden später bei Schuberth als op. 7 und op. 8 herausgegeben.
Jedenfalls ist die Romanze Souvenir d'Amitie offensichtlich später komponiert worden als die übrigen Romanzen aus op. 7 (und 8 nach Schuberthscher Zählung). Das lässt sich vor allem an der kräftigen Modulation nach B-Dur und an der herberen Klangsprache erkennen, Stilmittel die in den frühen Romanzen noch nicht vorkamen. Da auch bislang kein Autograph dieses Werkes bekannt ist, bleibt uns nur übrig, uns an der nun erfolgten Weltersteinspielung zu erfreuen - ohne Näheres zu wissen.
The romance "Souvenir d'Amitié" by Henri Vieuxtemps is one of his more enigmatic works. Hofmeister's monthly reports note the publication of the work by Schuberth & Co. in Leipzig in March 1868. The copy of Schuberth & Co. New York used in the video gives the year of publication as 1867. Vieuxemps was not in America at the time. So far there is no evidence that the opus number 8bis was agreed with Vieuxtemps. Presumably the publisher wanted to establish a connection with the successful but much earlier Romances op. 8. Schuberth & Co. had already repeatedly thrown Vieuxtemps' opus numbering out of kilter for marketing purposes. The Violin Concerto in F sharp minor, already published by Troupenas in Paris as op. 8, was later published by Schuberth as Violin Concerto No. 2, op. 19. The works already published by Troupenas as 7 Romances op. 7 were later published by Schuberth as op. 7 and op. 8.
In any case, the Romance Souvenir d'Amitie was obviously composed later than the other Romances from op. 7 (and 8 according to Schuberth's counting). This can be recognized above all by the strong modulation to B flat major and the harsher tonal character, stylistic techniques which did not yet appear in the early romances. As no autograph of this work is known to date, we can only enjoy the world premiere recording that has now been made - without knowing any more details.
