Henri Vieuxtemps schrieb insgesamt 10 Violinkonzerte, von denen die beiden ersten (op. 5 und op. 7) und das letzte (op. 59) noch wenig bekannt sind. Das Konzert op. 7 ist bisher unveröffentlicht, es ist sein zweites Violinkonzert.
Sein erstes Konzert E-Dur, op. 5 verfasste Vieuxtemps im Wesentlichen 1835 unter der Anleitung von Anton Reicha in Paris, er vollendete die Instrumentation Anfang 1836 und spielte das Konzert anschließend in den Niederlanden, in Deutschland und am 4.12.1836 im Wiener Saal der Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde. Das Konzert op. 5 erschien erst 2022 bei der Edition Kunzelmann als Erstausgabe, es existiert noch keine Einspielung.
Das Konzert op. 7 komponierte Vieuxtemps lt. seiner Autobiografie 1836 während seiner Konzertreise durch Mitteleuropa. Im Winter 1836/37 erhielt Vieuxtemps Kompositionsunterricht bei Simon Sechter in Wien, der ihm bei der Instrumentation des Werkes half.
Die Bibliothèque royale de Belgique bewahrt unter der Signatur Mus. Ms. 4743 den Klavierauszug aus dem Jahr 1836 sowie fast komplettes Orchestermaterial aus dem Jahr 1837 auf (es fehlen nur die 1. Violine, die Bassposaune und die Pauken). Leider ist jedoch die Solo-Violinstimme nicht auffindbar, so dass dieses Konzert derzeit weder herausgegeben noch aufgeführt werden kann.
Die hiermit veröffentlichte Demo-Aufnahme zeigt die Introduktion des 1. Satzes bis zum Einsatz der Solo-Violine und das Ende des 1. Satzes mit der Überleitung zum 2. Satz. Vieuxtemps beeindruckt in diesen Abschnitten seines Konzertes durch starke Kontraste, kräftige Harmonik und fantasievolle Instrumentation. Bereits der Beginn des Satzes durch ein Cello-Solo, gefolgt von Bratsche/Klarinette ist für die Entstehungszeit des Werkes sehr innovativ.
Da das Konzert zu Vieuxtemps Lebzeiten ungedruckt blieb, vergab er im Jahr 1846 die Opuszahl 7 an seine Romanzen für Violine und Klavier.
Henri Vieuxtemps wrote a total of 10 violin concertos, of which the first two (op. 5 and op. 7) and the last (op. 59) are still little known. The op. 7 concerto is previously unpublished; it is his second violin concerto.
Vieuxtemps composed his first concerto in E major, op. 5 essentially in 1835 under the guidance of Anton Reicha in Paris; he completed the orchestration in early 1836 and subsequently performed the concerto in the Netherlands, in Germany, and on Dec. 4, 1836, in the Vienna Hall of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde. The Concerto op. 5 was only published in 2022 by Edition Kunzelmann as a first edition; no recording exists yet.
According to his autobiography, Vieuxtemps composed the Concerto op. 7 in 1836 during his concert tour through Central Europe. In the winter of 1836/37 Vieuxtemps had composition lessons with Simon Sechter in Vienna, who helped him with the orchestration of the work.
The Bibliothèque royale de Belgique preserves under the shelf mark Mus. Ms. 4743 the piano reduction from 1836 and almost complete orchestra parts from 1837 (only the 1st violin, bass trombone and timpani are missing). Unfortunately, however, the solo violin part cannot be found, so that this concerto can neither be published nor performed at present.
The demo recording published herewith shows the introduction of the 1st movement up to the insertion of the solo violin and the end of the 1st movement with the transition to the 2nd movement. Vieuxtemps impresses in this sections of his concerto with strong contrasts, powerful harmonies and imaginative instrumentation. Even the opening of the movement by a cello solo followed by viola/clarinet is very innovative for the time the work was written.
Since the concerto remained unprinted during Vieuxtemp's lifetime, he assigned the opus number 7 to his Romances for violin and piano in 1846.
