Das Duo brillant wurde während Vieuxtemps erster Reise nach Ungarn im Winter 1837 gemeinsam mit Ferenc Erkel komponiert. Die Uraufführung fand am 26. Februar statt. Auch Leopold Jansa (4.10.1838) und Camillo Sivori (15.6.1841) spielten dieses Werk gemeinsam mit Ferenc Erkel in Pest, bevor Vieuxtemps zu seiner zweiten Reise nach Ungarn im Winter 1843 aufbrach. Während dieser Tournee spielten Vieuxtemps und Erkel am 27.1. erneut das Duo brillant. Erkel regte bei diesem Treffen auch die Komposition einer Version des Rakoczy-Marsches für Violine und Orchester an, die dann im Februar im ungarischen Theater Pest zweimal zur Aufführung kam.
Vieuxtemps hatte daraufhin vor, im deutschen Theater in Pest zwei weitere Konzerte zu geben. Am ersten der Abende, am 27. Februar kam es zu einem Skandal: „Hr. Vieuxtemps, der - obgleich er seinen Verpflichtungen, viermal im ungarischen Theater zu spielen, nachgekommen war, und ausserdemein Concert zum wohlthätigen Zweck gegeben hatte, im deutschen Theater gestern sein erstes Concert geben wollte, wurde von einer Rotte sich dadurch beleidigt wähnender Ruhestörer, dass Vieuxtemps seine Concerte nicht im Nationaltheater fortsetzte fürchterlich ausgepfiffen und verliess alsogleich das Theater ohne einen Strich gespielt zu haben!“ berichtete die Wiener allgemeine Musikzeitung.
Vieuxtemps verzichtete tief getroffen auf das zweite Konzert (und damit auch auf das Garantiehonorar von 1.000 Gulden) und reiste aus Pest ab, einen Brief mit folgender Nachricht hinterlassend: „Ich reise. Ich habe meine Violine befragt. Sie hat aber keinen Ton für Pesth mehr.“
Aufgrund dieses Erlebnisses vermied Vieuxtemps bis zum Jahr 1865 Reisen nach Pest. Das Duo brillant spielte er selbst nicht mehr.
The Duo brillant was composed during Vieuxtemp's first trip to Hungary in the winter of 1837, together with Ferenc Erkel. The first performance took place on February 26. Leopold Jansa (10/4/1838) and Camillo Sivori (6/15/1841) also played this work with Ferenc Erkel in Pest before Vieuxtemps left for his second trip to Hungary in the winter of 1843. During this tour, Vieuxtemps and Erkel again played the duo brilliant on Jan. 27. Erkel also suggested at this meeting the composition of a version of the Rakoczy March for violin and orchestra, which was then performed twice in the Hungarian Theater Pest in February.
Vieuxtemps had then planned to give two more concerts in the German Theatre in Pest. On the first of the evenings, on 27 February, a scandal erupted: ‘Mr. Vieuxtemps, who - although he had fulfilled his obligations to play four times in the Hungarian Theatre, and had also given a concert for charitable purposes, had wanted to give his first concert in the German Theatre yesterday, was horribly booed by a group of troublemakers, considering themselves offended that Vieuxtemps had not continued his concerts in the National Theatre, and left the theatre immediately without having played a note!’ the Wiener Allgemeine Musikzeitung wrote.
Vieuxtemps, deeply affected, abandoned the second concert (and with it the guaranteed fee of 1,000 guilders) and returned from Pest, leaving a letter with the following message: ‘I’m travelling. I asked my violin. But she has no note more for Pesth.’
Because of this experience, Vieuxtemps avoided trips to Pest until 1865. He no longer played the Duo brillant himself.
