Ryan The Ride Mechanic
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 23 มิ.ย. 2019
I’m Ryan the Ride Mechanic. I’ve always liked rollercoasters and amusement rides. Things I will talk about: I will cover things like rollercoaster basics, track design, train design, break design, chain design, water ride design, anti roll back design, different types of launch methods, maintenance systems, electronic safety systems, hydraulic systems, wheel basics, operations basics, basic amusement park 101 for guests. For all of these I’m simply going off my 14 years in the industry worth of experience. I’ll give the real world explanation as to why they work and what can go wrong. Keep in mind, I’m wrong about some of these things. Most manufacturers do not want the inner guts of their equipment opened up and examined. There are a lot of trade secrets that manufactures don’t want out, for that reason, I might have to take things down after posting if said manufacture contacts me and requests this.

It runs rough. I rode both sides of this thing and it is not smooth. I mean no traditional unstops. Using the guide wheels at a freakin angle to act as an upstop. Trying to reinvent the wheel on these things. They just need to stop and keep it simple stupid
Almost as reliable as the Skywarp model. Skyline only creates junk!
I am still baffled as to why Six Flags went back to Skyline after the massive failure that was their first project. I assume Skyline misrepresented how much the projects would cost in order to undercut other (more reputable) manufacturers.
@@MatecaCorp when manufacturers start out their stuff is quite cheap. But that typically because they will have design issues that the park will have to work through.
Too bad. I mean, the lighting package on those was cool, but why is anyone buying anything that resembles a roller coaster off of Skyline?

not surprised this looks like a piece of cheap trash. It won’t hurt to spend a little more on a real ride. Just remove it already. I feel like I could build this if I really wanted to.
Here's a fitting meme for you. There is a documentary from the 1960's on a railway in Wales named the "Talyllyn Railway." At 9:06 the narrator says, "DERAILED" after a train derails on film due to bad track. The railway still exists and they show that clip often in TH-cam videos. 😆 🚂 🎢

@@CritterCrossingFam whenever I go to a park where something I want to ride is. I always say “if it’s open”
Bruh why there isn’t a system on the computer system that literally does a simple thing such as dividing that angle value it measures to value from a timer to derivate the angular speed and if it ever stays at zero for more than a set time, just ramp up the motors to a great level like 30-40 for it to escape being stuck.. Use a super capacitor or battery powered system so it activates automatically when power is lost
@@adakalyoncu1913 a lot of systems have something like this. But this one did not, park probably never found a reason to install one. Or ask for it from the factory.
When I was a ride I, our SLC went down with a train full of passengers stuck in the station because the floor wouldn’t come back up. So we were entertaining the crowd on the train and in the station while waiting for maintenance and when they arrived it was like a hero’s welcome. Even better when they finally unloaded the train it was such a dramatic moment lol

7:55 This is the same thing for train movement. Mechanical can move trains with minimal protection within the yard, train crews have a different set of rules and a lot of limitations in the yard. We as transportation (the revenue train crew) cannot do anything at all until it is released to us. Once it is released to us we of course have to make sure that everyone is clear before we move it if we had to have mechanical return to check anything, but they do not require the same level of protection that we require, as far as dropping electrical and such, though we typically give them the most protection we can give them in any scenario. When we have people on board, or are on main tracks, they cannot do anything. If we are at a station they can open a door to get in or out themselves, and fix stuff inside the train, but they cannot do anything at all, even something they might be more qualified to do than transportation. Even when we had a dead train set stuck at a station on a main track, nobody was on, and it was more of a 2 person job to break apart the train because of some defect, it came down to the engineer needing to help out, because mechanical rules do not qualify them on main tracks.

I think more than likely it is legal related, but for other reasons based on what I've seen behind the scenes. Time will tell and if it's delayed due to the board, I highly doubt Six Flags is planning to pay the bill in this case in any capacity and if these discussions are happening a legal dispute is likely brewing beyond what has already started.
If you are ever in the Cleveland Ohio area I am a bowling center mechanic Id give ya a tour of the machines!
@@brianbeach9187 awesome! Thanks.
Zamperla were the ones selling the lightning trains as an a brand new innovative technological breakthrough for the amusement ride industry. Cedar Point did a whole rollout simply about the trains. It seems like the primary envelope being pushed from the engineering perspective was the trains. Could the trains be defective? How would that be determined? How would that play out? If the trains were defective, would that jeopardize the ride altogether?
@@h1jen1x super rare, but basically they would stop paying Zamperla until the problem was fixed. Lawsuits would be opened as well to try and legally define what needs to happen. My thoughts.
If you watch a magic mountain Goliath POV, right after the mid course the curve is covered in black gook. Do you think it is lube to stop valleys or just crap from the chain?

@@andrewleonard3623 yes. There are harder and you can go to nylons. But that very long time to do. More focused on what’s achievable.
was a thorpe over the past 2 days, got 5 rides in on hyperia and both trains were running fast at exactly the same speed (as far as i could tell) while riding and during testing so it seems like whatever was causing one train to be slower has been resolved
Update: they've installed wheel heaters in the station
Ryan I understand why Mine Blower in Florida received GCIs new steel track, and Lightning Rod, Tremors, Timber Terror, Boulderdash & 1 or 2 others I'm missing. However, Zambezi Zinger is the first brand-new coaster to install this ugly, noisy, horrible track. My question for you is WHY? Why did GCI decide to use their steel track only on the lift and wood track on the rest?
@@crooked-halo the area around the steel lift and surrounding supports, had a lot of stress on them that a wood laminate stack would not be able to take. At least not without a massive substructure. So my guess is that the steel is doing a functional job to help the train in those areas and other places they were able to construct traditional wood by standard as much lower cost to maintain so I can see that probably would’ve brought the price of the ride way down.
Love the Worlds of Fun b-roll! Such an underrated Six-Flags park.

I wonder if B&M offers a discounted rate with track tolerances. The last 3 or 4 B&Ms have been reported to have a rattle/shake to them. Dr. Diabolical, Iron Menace, Pipeline, and Penguin Trek. The reviews on them all seem to talk about a shake in the ride. Im gonna be riding Iron Menace here in about a month, so currently havent rudden any of them, just going off of review videos.
@@Spike-sk7ql I wonder the same thing. I don’t honestly know the answer. Reducing the death grip on tolerances cans drastically reduce the price.
@Spike-sk7ql I'm going next weekend to Dorney, and Iron Menace is top of my list. I was on Raptor and Rougarou every trip to Cedar Point so far this summer, so I get a little rattled. I usually am not the type to complain about that unless it's Rougarou trying to bash my skull in on its restraints.

That tight tolerance explains why B&M can retain such smooth rides for so long. It makes a difference long term too because it's less banging around that progressively makes it worse overtime otherwise.
except their latest inverts. for whatever reason their newer inverts have been known to develop a rattle just months after operating.
@@DahBananaCannon the trains are very heavy on the modern inverts, more weight further from the track will lead to more rattling. I also wonder if modern B&Ms have less crush than older ones to make up for the polyurethane wheels having more friction than the nylon wheels they used to use.
Hey Ryan, This brings up a question from my pro mod drag racing days. Can or Do they use ceramic bearings on the trains? I remember how blown away I was at the reduction to rolling resistance from just doing the front wheels. I'm not sure if the weight of the train or cost may be prohibitive but figured I would ask. #DoItForTheDots
@@misterenigma2013 love the tag! So I’m sure they are available but for the majority of applications they aren’t very economically feasible to run for 188 bearings. Now not to say there aren’t parks using them but it might be on very specific applications
The bit I am confused about, is the issue with Hyperia speed is only in the morning when its cold and empty trains, they normally do morning testing with water dummies until the ride is warmed up before running ut empty, then its fine and just get faster as the day goes on and the warmer it gets. No real difference to the process they also do with the smiler, they do morning testing with water dummies until it’s warmed up.
@@garethharvey8671 I would think the goal is not load dummies at alll. Speeds up the start up time n
