- This was an unusual evacuation as people decided to jump the boat and fall in the water in six flags Arlington Texas. This one is a current event making the news all over. Was it really tat bad? no one was injured. This is an in-depth breakdown about what went wrong what could be prevented in the future and some of the ins and outs of water ride evacuations.

Wild weeks indeed! In Germany, a Top-Spin had a failure where (so far this is all assumptions) one of the motors broke. The people got off safely, and thanks to the press we know that the worst thing that happened was that the people got a shock, because it did quite a loud bang as the failure happened.
(There is apparently even a video of this thing happening a couple years ago, although from short research I couldn't find it)
@@gg-vc4eh yea! Last time I saw that one of the motor couplers broke apart. Gives that wobbly effect.
Earlier this month at kings island, a deer fell into their rapids ride (theirs goes through a thick forest) they e stopped the ride and got emt with a stretcher expecting it to be dead. When the flow lessened it just jumped out and went back into the forest. 90% of people in line left and the line went from 1 hour to 5 minutes. The ride started soon after.

I worked this ride's counterpart at the Georgia park. Both were designed by Intamin and installed within about a year of each other. It has a parallel dual loading station, not a turntable system like later models usually have. The jet of water on the right side of the video is probably the automatic docking system, which is actually two water jets on opposite sides of the trough that will push rafts to the left or right depending on which side of the station they're needed on. I do not believe it has any gates or holdback devices in the trough. Once you leave the station, you're going to go as far as the water will take you.
At 0:40 that is one of the two distribution boxes where water from the pump emerges right outside of the loading station. If you hit the e-stop, the water coming out the pump will immediately start rushing back down the opposite way into the distribution box and through the stopped pump - it's possible someone who went overboard there could be pulled down into it, which is why the procedure for a man overboard right after station was to not e-stop the ride, but to wait for them to float past the first rapid, then e-stop.

@@ryantheridemechanic The dual lift is complex and I can see why everyone else went to a turntable or single channel station for later installations. Lots of photo eyes, lots of belts (I think there were 8 or 10 independently driven belt sections in total and multiple loading/unloading points), the drums at the ends of the belts that drove them had compressed air in them so the belt wouldn't slip, plus the automatic docking system and everything else that comes with a water ride... The crew needs to have their head on a swivel because if there was going to be something weird going on with guests it was almost always going to be on that ride.
Going back to the shop wet... This is a bit long but stay with it, the payoff is worth it. I worked for a certain park with a Dolphin show. As one of the entertainment techs, I had to frequently service the audio and lighting systems (the salt water wrecked havoc on electrical equipment.) As such, and since the dolphins stayed in the pool at all times, I was required to get introduced to them so they wouldn't panic when I showed up late after shows. The trainers had all of our techs that serviced the show spend quite a few hours with the dolphins.
One late evening in November I had to go repair a burned out dimmer pack. After completing the repair, as I was leaving the dolphins were following me at the side of the pool, chattering away. I stopped, knelt down and slapped the water at the side of the pool. They dove, swam away and resurfaced ....and executed a perfect tandem splash, soaking me completely.
Why? I had forgotten the proper command signals...and slapping the water is their cue to splash. 😁
My boss wouldn't let me go home to get a change of clothes (after he fell out of his chair laughing.) The trainers razzed me about it for months, and the dolphins always waited for me to try it again. Ahh, good times.

Ryan I love your content I love how you break things and make things simple in the maintenance side of amusement park rides. I myself am a ride operator trainer. At Elitch Gardens. One of the rides I do train on is disaster canyon which is also a river raft ride. Not like this one at at Over Texas. Now watching the video I was more watching it for the evacuation part of it. See what happened what went wrong and why it went wrong.
So watching the video I noticed that the operation a ride stop. Also I noticed the mechanic was there and I believe he was only there to monitor the situation and wasn't there to help the people evacuate the boat. I also noticed one of the employees were there also. I believe the employee was there to make sure people stayed calm and seated in the boat. But people panic when the boat started filling up with water. And that's when all hell broke loose. The people panic they started to head to the dock. And when all those rides headed to the one side of the boat the boat started to tip. ESOP was hit and then everything else happened.
From a scale from 1 to 10 of how dangerous this was it started as I say maybe a one or two but once those people panic that dangerous level jump to a 10. Especially that poor young kid luckily there was someone there to grab them. So I believe this incident could have been prevented if the riders listen to operations and the operations and the mechanics. Everyone's very lucky that it didn't turn out worse than it did.

30:42 I have seen POVs of Dudley Do Right's Ripsaw Falls where they had an employee stationed at the base of the lift to the final drop. It's not the same kind of ride, but I thought I'd mention it. I think they also have an employee stationed before the final drop of the Mall of America: Nick Universe Log Chute.
Before the drops I get it. All the log flumes were like that due to no CCTV for years. Thanks for the info.

Great explanation of the situation and great insight.
At the rapids in Alton Towers ( and Thorpe) we now have life guards stationed throughout the ride (kids not sitting down has caused this) but they also have long rescue poles situated throughout (they’re like 8ft long) - be interesting to know if they have anything like that on this attraction.
We had the same at my park as well. But you can only try so hard before the current would pull you in as well. Be careful
We were there Monday and our raft got stuck in that exact spot, and it hit that rubber stop HARD. thankfully we swung around but got close to hitting the boat behind us.
When the bladders are full of air the rafts move fine, typically.
We went yesterday and the ride was closed down. So was Auquaman and the bobsled ride.

I’m biased against water rides
I was actually at this park on the day this happened . There was a lot more chaos than what’s in this video. People were freaking out. Also there was a death on this same ride a few years ago when a raft cap sized. It’s cursed !
Almost every time a boat flip someone dies. It’s not a good record. I’ll ride them, but I don’t trust rapids rides further than I can throw them. They get as much pre inspection from me as a carnival ride.

Could they not install small bumpers that have a 20 degree angle before the section where it's flat to help spin the raft and avoid it getting stuck. I would think it would hit that and spin it into one of the two lift hills?
I would love to see the full video. “Cut for time” could also be the poster cutting to give the worst case. There’s a lot more that could have happened in that cut but that could tell us a lot about the event.
Also I would be surprised if there were any submerged gates on this model. The 6-9 person model (smaller) boats weight 1600 lbs dry and this park has the 12 person boats. I know the one in Williamsburg removed the boat brake from the trough because the boats were actually bending/breaking that boat brake. I know one that I have experience with replaced the pop up brake was replaced with a gate style instead for that reason.
I also know from experience, once a couple of boats jam up you aren’t pushing them apart without mechanical assistance.
Looking at the aerial view of the ride, the direction that the boats went at the end was towards the reservoir. And it looks like the maintenance shop is back there as well. So maintenance should be close by and if you look at the Google maps satellite image, the water appears to flow back there and drain mostly out of where this incident happened.
I can’t speak to this ride but when the one I have experience with is shut down the water sits at a minimum of 14’ deep.
Also it looks like these are the older style intamin boats with the higher backs and no roll supports.
Also the one that I’ve dealt with doesn’t have the spinning barrels to keep things moving at all. The barrels were removed long ago.
I’m also surprised that the boat was not secured when it was noticed that the bladder was flat.
I’m anxiously waiting to see the rep port from the investigation. So far it’s been radio silence from everyone so far.

Nobody should ever be in the rushing water like that. There should have been more preparation of the guests to let the know the raft was going to go backwards.

15:20 it makes sense on how much force there is in that current. Think about a loaded raft, full bladder and then all of the seating and whatever else on the raft. Those rafts get pushed with ease. If it can do that to a heavy raft, there is no chance a human being can outswim or hold onto a ledge like that.

Should not be happening. They usually test the ride before opening with empty boats as well.
I loved going to six flags when I was younger. I’ve outgrown nearly all of them. Meaning I’m too fat to fit on any of the rides. Last time I got on a coaster, I didn’t realize how much weight I’d put on until I got wedged into the seat. Scariest ride ever. I think if I got on a raft ride, it would look like flat bladders on the boat. Not worth the price of admission for a bath.
1998 There was a 28 Year old woman who died on this ride!

One the reasons..I don't go on these rides, anymore. I remember going on a ride, called the..zipper, when I was a kid, and basically..you're in a locked cage, turning at high revolutions..scary as hell..

E stop on that ride drains the water within 5 min and they cannot do it if ppl r in the water passed a certain point since the pumps are under the dock

Another great video. My last resort would be to jump in, I would probably take my seat belt off incase it flipped, but not only would I be afraid of getting caught in moving machinery I also don't trust everything to be still properly grounded. I assume most of the machinery is both high voltage (240/440v) and high amps. I rode it a few weeks before this incident and 2 times we routed directly into the left lane, and once we smashed into the pier because we overshot the lane (only running one side because park wasn't crowded). The raft still had enough spin it rolled off the pier and into the lane. I would ride it again before watching your video, and after I feel even more confident of my safety. There is one thing I think is odd, I have seen at least one park choose to put key controlled locks on lap belts, which seems a horrible idea if the raft was to flip, could be a different style ride where there is no spot deep enough to flip, I cant recall.
My question is why did that kid jump in? I know he was not expecting to have to swim as hard as he did because I don't think he knew that they had changed the direction of the river or drained it whichever 1 they did but still why wouldn't you stay on the raft why would you jump in?
Looks like (I’m guessing) dad stepped off right as the boat started drifting backwards. Then (guessing) didn’t want to be separated so he jumped for dad but missed.
It didn’t help that everyone likes to one side of the boat making the boat fill with water even faster

Who makes the decision or call to finally hit the E-Stop?
Typically whoever is working the panel, but often rides have several e-stop button locations. It's the crew's call.

Can’t remember how the seat belts work, but how did the guests unlock restraints? Are the seat belts really that easy to just undo anytime, or are there no restraints?
From what I've heard (because on my continent, we don't even have restraints on rapids), they are typically basically the same seat belts you find on aeroplanes, so they are easily unlockable. And it's necessary they are that way in case the raft capsizes, so that your head won't be stuck underwater for a prolonged period. 2 children, 11 and 16, experienced drowning in the 2021 Raging River incident, resulting in the death of the 11 year old and hospitalising the 16 year old, because they were unable to release themselves from the restraint, indicating that even seat belts that guests can open themselves may be too much restraint for this ride type.
So who told the people to get off the ride??? Did anyone tell them to stay seated??? What about the person with the sun umbrella??? Maybe give them a megaphone too.

No dippin dots in Germany? Understandable. Most food is the US is not classified as food in the rest of the world. It’s fast freeze drops of ice cream if you’re not joking. And it’s expensive!

@@Helawutz most parks here in the US sell it as a novelty treat. But the profit margin is very small for the park. So this product is closely watched as a loss would be a lot of money out for the park. If that makes sense.

What would you have done if you were in that yellow raft?
Just waited. Then when it started to tip I would have told people to go to the neighboring rafts not the catwalk. The rafts were much more stable at that point.
Then there was the incident on the water ride called shoot the incident Sometimes I wonder to if employees were trained properly in procedures but also I hear about incidents with these water rapids rides and stuff like that and often wonder what could be done differently to improve these water rapids rides or a different design that coup could happen.
I often wonder to if we have water rides on tracksif there is such a thing then there would be less problems at least ones on tracks you could do a lap bar or sholdier system or one of those lap bars that go up your fir further to prevent you from getting out of a ride if it is one that is on a track I don't know rides to well from meckannick stuff but I still wonder wou what could be done differently.
These accidents keep happening and people hear about them and then they are in situation themselves and maybe they remember what the news says in detail then they start reacting to it.
That is why I wonder about a full on track system instead of a floating system I wonder if there would be other ways of designing a rapids ride to like the lazy rivers have some kind of pumping systemi think to but you are just in a inner tub on lazy rivers you fall out no problem but i wonder if you could go touch faster not so fast be to strong but some what faster to make ride more fun then you could just float fas down faster like you would in a river.
Also another thing is not so much water rides but could apply is evackuations for people with disabilities. and we never talk enough about making rides excessible enough for people with disabilities to ride though some have big steps to get into and stuff like that. we need more rides where a wheelchair could just wheel right up to the seat and person can just transfer instead of getting up or down a big huge step. Disabled people and rides is something that is not talked about enough. I feel people with disabilities that are able to ride even if they are in wheelchair should be able to have same experience as rest of us inclusitivity and stuff is talked about so much that it is a discussion to be had.
I know some people like jerks on water rides but i just think geting back to topic of water rides perhaps safer way would be water rides on tracks and tons of jets spraying at people like could we do a lap bar and seat belt system in a water rapids ride or is that a bad idea though.
Like a safer way would just to design track system like a roller coaster and less to go wrong and stuff like that.
i am sure there must be a way to creatsplash down affect that gets people wet on a track based water ride and a feeling of rafting could be created even on a track at least with water jets or whatever.
Just needs a designer to come up with it.

I bought a poncho the first time I went to Disney world. Because people from California told me to. Wet poncho in the humidity is possibly the worst thing ever! Ugh. Rather wear a snow parka than a poncho

Falling in a rapids ride is a definite fear. All kinds of danger in that water.
Interesting video here of the rapids at Thorpe Park when a guest decided to jump out. Was surprised how he managed to run along the trough and keep up with the boat to then jump back in!

@@ryantheridemechanic Ever since a fatality on a rapids ride at a UK park a few years back, pretty much all UK parks station staff at points around the course including around lifts and wave machines to watch out for people behaving dangerously like this. It must make them very expensive to operate!

I think we need to stop using such soft language during E-stops. Instead of "stay seated for your safety", the announcement needs to be "stay in your seat or else you will most likely be KILLED." Panic is strong, but if they have a voice that says that you are safer in your seat then trying to hop out, that will be the voice of logic and convince them to stay seated. All day long these people have heard "for your safety... blah blah blah", so they ignore that terminology. But if parks started using stronger verbage during their E-stop announcements, they will actually understand that the ride operators and maintenance know what's better for their safety than they do. Guests need a voice of reason telling them that if they try to take things into their own hands, they will very likely fail miserably.
Simple solution.....E-STOP...
SO THE WATER CAN DRAIN....
But them jumping out could have been way more disastrous....someone depending on the inlets could have been pulled underwater....
And also someone could have been crushed your talking about a 1500 lb boat empty...UGH...
I never ride rapid rides or giant swings! I’ll ride any roller coaster at a major amusement park though
