    the story of the crew accidently pushing the restraint unlock, reminded me of the time i did that on a roller coaster that is a bit of a landmark. the difference was instead of trying to dispatch the ride immediately after realizing my mistake, I took my hands off the controls, completely off the controls, and had the operators on the load and unload side recheck restraints. my hands did not go back on the controls, until the restraint check was complete and the station operators were in the correct position, before i put my right hand on the dispatch button as the load rear operator handled the other button, and while i was putting my hand on the button readying to dispatch, i was looking at the controls until my hand was on the button and ready to dispatch. i dared not actuate the button, until i knew my hand was where it should be and i had the all clear from the other operators.

      Yep we all make mistakes right. But realize and recover. Not realize and dispatch!! Haha!

    I like to think this park exists in some sort of darker mob controlled universe and when the ride crew is never seen again, it's because they are literally never seen again. 😂

    LOL back in my time as a Ride mechanic we had pagers not cell phones ''we had park Radios of courses" but my pager fell in the log ride and it was in there for at least an hour. I got it out blew it out with some compressed air and that thing worked all up until I got a cell phone. Probably a year or more.

    Have you ever seen the rocket cars that Disneyland uses in Space Mountain? If you have, you will see "rocket nozzles" on the back of each car. in the 1980's I was waiting in line for the ride. I was in the station overlooking the "launch track" where passengers load/unload. If you have seen the mechanisms for this ride, they are unique. Instead of latch dogs, The cars have a blade protruding under the center, like a LIM fin. This engages sets of opposing spring-loaded cams that open when car goes forward, but grab if it tries to go backward. Every drive (including mounted on the moving lift-chain as well as stationary ones for anti-rollback) has these cam sets. In the stations, cam sets are mounted on long-throw (~15 feet) air cylinders. So car comes in from the ride, stops. Then one of the cylinders jerks the car 15 feet forward to the unloading zone. After unloading, another cylinder jerks car to loading zone. As I was watching from above, one of the cars jerked forward too far & hit the next car. Suddenly, the rocket nozzle's function became evident! Inside was a "crush zone" that absorbed impact. The ride was immediately shut down & mechanics came out of the woodwork, crawling over numerous air gauges.

      Disney is ok with the bumps in the stations. Allows the throughput to be higher And typically the bumps aren’t that hard. Most are just meant to be a mismatch in brake pressure and timing I think. Thanks for the story

    Thats kinda crazy, if i heard the distinct locking (and unlocking) sound rides have i’d recheck my panel/ monitors wondering why I just heard the train unlock. But then again I get a loud woosh of air everytime we lock restraints so its kinda hard to miss.

    Interesting on the superman ride with the brake and the operator button. With all those resources wrapped up with troubleshooting, and the expense, why don’t the control system programmers as a matter of course have an error log file/audit file that’s written to real time so you can look back at when buttons are being pressed.

      Just more cost and time. The engineering company, park, and manufacture didn’t feel it was necessary to monitor the secondary person.

I am a huge rollercoaster-nerd myself, and I'm heavily thinking about working in the amusement-tech business, just because I want to know more about how these marvels of engineering work.     Getting a larger guest into a ride is such a satisfying feeling. The issue is that if a higher up sees me PUSHING on a guest I get in trouble cuz it’s bad optics I think

      As a larger guy, I come into every ride with a strategy to make myself fit. I can get myself into almost everything without help, the one major exception being the old B&M invert OTSRs (For some reason I don't have an issue with the floorless ones.) I can get the buckle in, but getting it to latch is a challenge. There's not a good angle for me to pull down and help myself, and god forbid the seatbelt is half an inch shorter than expected. Thankfully the big boy seats do exist, but they're usually not in the best place on the train.

    One time on a specific S&S screamin swing, I had the same thing you had happen on that Impulse coaster. The operator hit the wrong button, the restraints came up about 3 inches, locked again, and then the ride started. It was by far the most adrenaline I’ve ever gotten at a theme park. I was working as a supervisor at that time and I had a good conversation with my manager after that. Luckily there were only about 10 people on the ride and it seems like they were all strong enough to push the bar back down.

    Fun fact about the Thomas The Tank Engine story: Thomas's face being opened up for maintenance is actually accurate to the lore of the series! The characters' faces are right where the smokebox door is on a real steam locomotive and those have to be opened on a regular basis to clean out the inside. It isn't shown on the show or in the illustrations of the books the show is based on to avoid freaking out children, but the author was insistent that everything in the series works like the real thing except the trains can talk, so it's implied that Thomas's face can just swing out on a hinge.

    lol my son has Autism. He was all about Thomas the Tank Engine for like 6 years. If my son had seen the face removal he would have lost his S$!t. I bet those kids were mortified!

    I love these stories, so recognisable to me. Had a fair share of ride operators faulting rides out (not always on purpose), hoping you have more to tell a next time. Or maybe you can do a react on send in stories.

      React on send in stories. Might be interesting. I be worried I would interpret them the wrong way and miss something. Now a video from people might be better. Still gets their story out and I could react after. Cool idea. And there is part 3 for this I guarantee. It more at maintenance and other not so ops heavy.

    Idk if you can say but if you can is it six flags discovery kingdom you worked at. It has a skyrocket 2, SLC and an impulse coaster, and I can’t think of any other park with that combo. If so, any stories with joker (working on an rmc) or even Harley Quin Crazy Coaster. That thing was a maintenance nightmare and by that it seems it might have been yours

    Won’t disclose the ride or park, but have a few good ride of shenanigan stories - but our most notorious ~instant suspension and termination~ story was a ride op who knew a bit too much, but apparently lacked common sense.
    The guy wanted to find out what would happen if you left something metal on a proxy switch. This ride had some accessible at the front and rear of the train in the station. So, he put a quarter on the last proxy sensor in the station and sent the train out of the station.
    This ride had effectively 1 extra block section. The train in the block break did not advance into the station, as a train was still “detected” in the station. The train that was dispatched ended up setting up at the top of the lift hill, as the control operator didn’t know what was going on, and why the train wasn’t coming into the station. They ended up having to evacuate the trains from the block breaks and top of the lift hill. The ride was only a few months old at this time, and this was the first evacuation from the lift hill for this ride.
    The story has not one but two kickers - one, he told the other person checking restraints across from him he was going to do it on the next cycle, but when the train set up on the lift and all the higher ups were there, he said it fell out of his pocket and landed there by total chance. So he was sold down the river very quickly. There’s also a security camera in that station, and the operations managers and supervisors rolled back the footage, and watched him carefully bend down and place it on the sensor.
    The second kicker - the dude just applied and was offered a position in maintenance. He got the offer letter THAT DAY about 5 hours before this happened. That offer was rescinded immediately.
    The guy was an enthusiast as well, and would sometimes come back to the park as a guest, so he wasn’t ever truly forgotten. We called him quarters up until at least 2 years later, and would jokingly ask him if he his quarters were secure just about every time he came through the station

    What would even be the point of wanting the train to overshoot the station? The only thing I could see is boredom or perhaps it makes unload times *slightly* faster?

    Yup, fattest guest, it makes sense. Do not, when you are large, make a 16 year old tell you the restraint wont close. You already know. They are embarrassed to tell you.

    Is the impulse still able to do that seat release then launch? I think that had happened but thought I was crazy.

      As far as I know. It’s an error on the operator not a problem with the ride.

    Why would operations need access to that air compressor button at all?? If operators shouldn’t mess with things why is it not controlled with an access key or similar that only tech services can access??

    Were you still working at your park when the Skyline ride was there? If you were, I think it would be cool if you did a video talking about the issues it had. A ride being taken out after just 1 year is insane

      I heard a lot about it. I was there and left just as the structure was being put up. (This took several weeks when it should have taken several hours….. . . . ……. .. .) but I got lots over one sided info on the bad things. And most of it I already knew just by looking at it in concept.

    Do rides that have “quirks” or bugs have over-the-air software updates like some smart appliances (3D printers, cars, etc). I’m definitely not saying what that operator did was okay, but wouldn’t his bad actions help improve the ride for other parks (assuming the PLC logic was updated with a fix)?

      Once the manufacturer gives the final sign off on the ride (before it opens) the logic is very rarely ever changed. Updates to the processor for things like firmware never happen. It’s not a bad thing. Firmware updates can crash programs and cause them to malfunction. With normal electronics we update because the world around us is changing. With ride controls, they are frozen in time. Even if I got a new processor with firmware 14.7 I can remove it and install the original V 2.4. Typically a firmware update means the program would have to be recertified like a new ride.

    Once had a family friend travel to Fl with us who was a short large lady, we all got to ride Kumba together thanks a very obliging ride attendant who help her with the restraint by using their feet to shove it down a tad more.

      I actually have no background on that. Never heard the actual story. Even 15 years later they still said it was a misinterpretation of prints

Both trains while they are sitting on the lsms waiting to launch have a slight pulsing rhythmic tremble. It's cool curious on the mechanics of what and why?

      @@LTCoasters just a guess; sense the drive tires are holding the train while the track is in movement there should be no motion. Once the tires drop, the drive might be trying to hold the train in a “0” position to launch. So they allow a bit of drift sense the track is slanted. Once the train moves 10mm ish then the motors gently advance the train back to “0” and the stop. If it sits for a while you could feel this multiple times. This is all just a guess. But based off of the slanted track it sits on instead of flat.

      So every time you modify the system to allow someone larger to sit in it, you make a smaller person fit not as great as they could. So I don’t think they’re going against weight limits or anything else, but you kind of modify the train to accommodate more larger people and then it doesn’t really do well with the smaller people, a perception that gets skewed a lot as you have to remember there are a lot of kids barely tall enough to ride the ride getting on there for the first time and a very small kid you might not want in a extra large seat. The other thing is that you can’t put the two extra large seats next to each other because of an average shoulder spacing needed doesn’t work that well I don’t think manufacturer specify where those seats have to go so I believe the parks can just move them to wherever they want but I honestly don’t know if you can add seats. I know the mechanics you can just replace the inside components and make a seat, but I don’t know if the manufacturer allows that I’ve never asked that question.

      @@ryantheridemechanic I expect that, in the interest of safety, manufacturers do not want to explore the idea of guests being exclusively categorized for certain seats/trains- with the possibility of guests covertly switching between queues into inconsistent restraints.

      ​@@ryantheridemechanic interesting that you mention only two. The B&M I operate actually has four! Another in the same park though only has two. I wonder if the ride model is a factor. The one with four is an invert, while the one with two is a floorless.
