- I in this video, I'm going to speculate about what we could be wrong with Hyperia at Thorpe Park. I don't have any really good explanation as to what is going on but I'm going to put my two cents in for what I can see from other videos and pictures rolling in from the Internet.

The irony of the outro is that there were apparently lot of issues regarding people leaning on air gates on opening day.
Haha! Can’t win them all
Its the curse of Theme Park Worldwide! Both coasters went down the day after Shawn rode them. 😂
i swear he tends to have that effect 😂
He was there on press night and it didn’t go down the next day 👀
@@HarryJSmith he was there opening day also at both parks and both coasters were closed the next day. 🤷♂️😂
@@theweakestlink2278 I’ll give you that

Fellow ride mechanic here :)
After seeing pictures, listening to reports from those who visited, and using my own experience and knowledge, i have come to a conclusion im pretty confident in.
First issue is the gates: i think this is related to air pressure, this is because air gayes are supposed to be near enough impossible to move once locled into place due to the air pressure, if the pressure isnt sufficient then there will be some wiggle on the gate if a person leans on it, this will trip a sensor and cause a fault.
Second issue/main issue: the lifthill, mack are a very experienced manufacturer, so i think a design flaw is unlikely. What i think has happened is the chain wear strips have been installed incorrectly. These strips are designed to prevent the chain rubbing on the lift itself and provide some lubrication. If these were not installed properly, then its very likely they could have failed and interfered with the running of the chain, thus causing the excess noise and vibration at the top of the lift.
The gate issue we cant really see get fixed so im unsure of what they're doing to that, bigger compressor possibly
The lift hill will need the wear strips replaced and then all of the other strips will need to be inspected, the frame we have seen lifted up by the crane is likely to be a frame from lifting the chain up to get to the wear strips as you cant just move it out the way by hand.
Why this is taking so long? Well firstly they needed a crane, that takes time to organise. Secondly they need parts, that takes time to order and ship. Thirdly, extensive testing will need to be carried out to ensure the issues do not crop up again and no mew issues have surfaced.
This is just my speculation as an experienced ride mechanic and is by no means fact
Cool thanks for the input.
This is also the tallest lift hill Mack rides have made so far. Unexplored territory for them in a way.
I feel height is more related to train stress on the design problem end. I think this is just odd ball part failure.
I was there on opening - i was surprised how loud/grindy the lift hill sounded on opening day and most of the noise was coming from the crown of the lift hill rather than the motor so i think your bang on the money here
Should sound nice and smooth. Just a fast clicking of the links. Never loud or metallic sounding.
Excellent Video, Thorpe Park is our favourite park in the UK. The wife won some tickets to be one of the first to ride Hyperia, and I have blamed her for breaking the ride. It is an excellent coaster, and the opening ceremony/day was brilliant. Over the years, I have carried out numerous installations, and virtually all have some sort of problem in the first weeks. If any theme park is going to get it back running, it will Thorpe Park.
Yep normal stuff. Sucks to go through. But it’s almost expected.
@@ryantheridemechanic And no matter how much you test during commissioning, the problems normally only occur after the installation has been handed over to the customer. I write software for a living now, and it's still the same: during testing, no problems; as soon as the customer uses it, problems....
@@richywiggins3845 worst days for rides are media day and opening day.
Wonderful information as usual thanks for shedding your logic and expertise on these issues.
Your welcome. Hope it gives some extra thought to the process.
Yep, that's what they get for going with Cogswell instead of Spacely!
They should just call George, he'll fix 'em right up.
He keeps firing his staff though! Haha!
When I saw the upload, I genuinely thought this week flew by and it was Friday already.
Oh I’m sorry. It’s a spur of the moment load. I’m told it’s bad to do as it confuses people when the channel releases videos. But this wasn’t enough to stand alone as a Friday video.
It was definitely worth it. This is one of my favorite channels, and one of the only few I have notifications turned on for. More episodes the merrier!
@@NewEnglandModz awe thanks! Love to hear it’s well received.
I think they will avoid removing the top section of the track at all costs. The British media would have a field day - I can see the headlines now “UK’s tallest coaster is removed after 1 day of opening”.
I bet!!
😂😂😂
Hahaha love the video editing tricks you're playing with. Keep up the great work! Love seeing your evolution as a youtuber
Awesome thank you!
I can listen to you talk all day long! awesome video man
Thanks
Thanks for the video. I really enjoyed the insight into the possibilities.
Thanks!
Only inspections halfway up the lift and on top of the lift according to people that live close to the park. People from MACK booked a flight right back to London after they landed back in Germany.
For the manufacturer to come back, it’s not a general problem. Hmmm.
I can confirm Mack did indeed return to site@@ryantheridemechanic
I was just at the park yesterday - crane and cherry-picker on site, with engineers on and underneath the crown of the lift for pretty much the whole day - lots of activity!
Love the video as always! Me and my friends have been speculating ever since Hyperia went down, and I had a similar theory to you in the sense of the problem may have been the chain sprockets at the top of the lift hill. I was thinking maybe a stress issue or one of the teeth broke/deformed due to stress. I wasn’t 100% accurate with you but my idea was similar to yours 😃
Seems to line up
@@ryantheridemechanic thank you! ☺️
I’m here today. Work has begun on the lift hill. Seems to be engineers working the top and the bottom. Saw the ride is closed because of close proximity to the crane
Keep us informed if you see anything else to report on.
Will do. Currently 2 engineers on the top and a cherry picker with 3/4 engineers going up and down. Not close enough to see if they are carrying anything. There is a second crane which looks like it has a hoist but it’s empty at present
@@ryantheridemechanic The frames and the crane is down now

I watched how the there were multiple times that the trains got stuck on the lift hill, towards the top of the hill it slowed down the trains asap

Hi There, a great explanation and analysis Video, thanks for sharing your thoughts. Cheers Peter 🙂

The more ride closures i see, the more i understand B&M as a manufacturer of choice so frequently
in fairness Mack are usually known for their reliability
One interesting point, they have added an Anemometer at ground level.
Ryan, your channel is awesome! Keep making videos!
Thank you!
I ride hyperia and the airtime is crazy it doesn’t feel real on that outer banked turn
good thing Thorpe park didn't go with the inexperienced Zamperla to build Hyperia
Did seem a loud lift hill on opening. Some people said it was getting louder as the day progressed
I don't know if that last request was in response to what was happening on Opening Day, or just complete coincidence, but either way, it made me laugh. Thanks for a great video Ryan.
Thanks
@@ryantheridemechanic No, thank you :) Hope you don't mind but I just posted your vid to the Hyperia thread on CF.
@@coasterfest sure that’s great! Thanks!
This is a nice little surprise!
im guessing its some growing pains with the install. guessing sensors are acting up or something a little more serious. from reports i have heard it may be something with the lift hill, but obviously cant really confirm that. though if top brass from Mack is out there its going to be serious
I was there yesterday and saw someone on the top of the lift. I also noticed that the crane was either gone or in a different location because I didn’t see it when on rides directly next to it. 🤷♂️
Let hope it’s gone! And about to start testing! That would be great
@@ryantheridemechanic fingers crossed!🤞
Asking again for a video on Harley Quinn Crazy Coaster.....Id love to see an entire video about that ride/experience and only about that, if you're allowed to divulge that information. Pretty relevant with the lack-of-availability of those new Kid Flash Coasters. Thanks!
I’m uneasy about that. It would not be a good video and I try not say just bad things whenever possible.
@@ryantheridemechanic okay fair. I'll stop asking lol. Keep up the great work!

I was so ready to blast Intamin for this delay until I read it was a Mack Ride.
Sadly as at 19/06/24, Hyperia is closed again, after not making a hill and rolling back.
Yep no fun
What kind of warrenty comes with a new coaster? They cant be paying for parts for it already.
Right now it’s not the cost of the parts or labor it’s the lost revenue and bad press the ride gathered. Thorpe is trying to stay on top of it but bad press sets in fast.
So RMC is the now the reliable benchmark ❤
Cough (lightning rod) oh excuse me. Hahah! No that wasn’t their problem at all. RMC are pretty reliable for sure. They took what works and duplicated it. Now if they ever do a major revision change to trains etc. that might be out the window.
Yeah, RmC is great....failed brake runs, crashed (bumped) trains structural issues, rmc'd a rmc'd rmc, caught a historic coaster structure on fire, whatever has been wrong with tge cRaptor trains..RMC reliability is worse than Intamins
Very insightful. Nice! I've always wondered how they put the chain on a coaster of this size. They must weigh a few tonnes?
Yea I’m guessing in the 7 ton range but once it’s connected the weight is nice and even.
Very interesting videò i love it !!
Thanks!
Thankfully managed to get on it on opening day!
Oh nice! Did you like it. Looks pretty sweet.
Yeah it’s good. Better than Voltron, not as good as Ride to Happiness.
Its been a bad year for new rides. Hyperia obviously. Voltron has problems on some cars with rough rides. Nemesis Reborn had to run the rides half empty for the first couple of weeks. Top Thrill 2 also had to close shortly after open.
ohhh finally some nice 1080p "HD" upload!
Got new editing software and it can produce the quality without it being 15gb after.
Hey, I noticed you (possibly) misspelled Top Thrill's in the title. I just wanted to point that out, just in case it was a mistake. Great video!
I’m guessing they are waiting for parts / Mack engineer availability. It was run for 14 hours straight on the first day with over a 4 hour queue.
Thorpe are very open on social media, they’re very good at replying to questions on their posts as well.
I think “a part” would be as much as they offer to divulge.
Queue was actually 7h as that's how long it took me for my first ride, 2.5h for my second ride.
@@aarontaylor7750 WOW! So long. I have seen video of the full queue and it looks so massive and long
Surprise video! Sweet
Not sure if you are aware, on opening day there were multiple power outages. If it had been the entire park lost power then I would say unrelated, however when the power went down it took down HYPERIA , Saw and Colossus and the rest of the park stayed online.
P.S. the ride is absolutely phenomenal and world class.
Does any of that information add anything to the story.
No. I feel if it were power/ controls they would be on the lift base. Even if a sensor was bad on the lift I would have pulled new wire to I by now.
@@ryantheridemechanic likely just a coincidence then.
@@aarontaylor7750 yes (in my opinion)
I was in the single riders queue when that happened but turns of even Swarm shut down
Mid week Ryan the Ride Mechanic video? You spoil us, sir.😅
Haha!
From what i've seen fairly sure that Mack rides are on site already ahead of parts arriving (there was info of them being flown in from Germany), so i feel they are confident that they know exactly what the issue is and that is why we have such good dates set by them/thorpe park.
Thorpe should be a standard most parks should try to be like!
@@ryantheridemechanic Merlin seem to be very good with the parks in the UK lately, if there is an issue which requires the manufacturer you can almost guarantee that Merlin will have them flown out asap. When hyperia was going in they had "Mack Rides" vans parked around TP, that was nice to see, got the impression they were helping out with other issues with other rides but we'll never know... was interesting seeing Mack vans/engineers in "The Saw" ride area last year...
Yeah the moment it was announced Hyperia wasn't opening on the 25th the Mack family head back immediately to check out the problem
That intro! 😂💀
Thanks!
Bahaha! Got a big kick out of the intro.
That came to me, and I had to put it in! I got a good laugh out of it as well!
thorpe park is great for transparency went on an off peak day just before hyperia opened so it would be quiet if a ride went down and staff knew what was wrong theyd just tell you
Nice
Hi Ryan. Do you have a rough idea how much testing would have to commence before being allowed to reopen, if the problem is what you assume it is.
Not much honestly. Once it’s all buttoned back up. Load the trains, probably about 100ish cycles. Verify whatever it was is doing well, then open it up. Of course all this varies by the type of problem it is. (We still don’t know)
@@ryantheridemechanic thankyou, I'm hoping to go on the 11th June but not sure what the likelihood is now 🤔

I recommended so many crazies from here in the UK check out your channel because of the absolute trash coming from them regarding Hyperia. But I'm pretty sure they still wouldn't accept the facts from an actual ride engineer 😂

They rushed the opening with not enough testing. Nemesis reborn had so much more testing. I have been saying when they announced that open date it’s too early should be mid June at least.
They must have felt confident in it.
They did not rush testing, if they even had to consider rushing testing then they would have just pushed back the opening, they confirmed this themselves on Twitter.
@@asterisks3062 they wanted it open for the anniversary weekend which yes they did do but this now shows that it should of been tested a lot longer
Nemesis reborn ran half empty at first because of a problem. Not exactly a perfect new ride launch.
