United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 10 ส.ค. 2020
Hi! I'm Brisa Marie and I have a PhD in Culture and Performance (CAP) from UCLA. If I am honest... Grad school was hard. I tried, I failed, I cried, and eventually I figured it out and graduated!! (Whew!) There were a lot of obstacles that made getting my degree harder than it had to be... So, I made this channel to make sure no one has to struggle through grad school again.
I make resources that helps people get into grad school, find grad advice once they're there, and helps them get out in one successful piece! This channel answers questions that demystify what graduate school is, while giving my advice on how to thrive as a graduate student at any stage!

A NOTE ON GENOCIDE
I am accountable to people invested in liberation and anti-coloniality, I find it particularly important that I also take a moment to acknowledge that we must bear witness and stand with all global communities experiencing the violence of settler colonialism and genocide. In this moment, I hope to bring attention to and honor the people of the Congo, Sudan, Artsakh, Tigray, Palestine, and Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in Northwest China. I hope this moment reminds you to learn, to divest from genocide & its capitalist machines, and to fight and uplift our global human relatives who are quite literally fighting for their lives and their right to exist.

Hi Brisa, Thank you so much for the amazing advice. Your video was so helpful.
I used abstract of my reseach thesis, result, method is it ok one page
Oh! Bixia! Oh! First Emperor of China! please give me funding! I beg you! I can deliver for you, Elixir of Immortality! Mercury! Bixia! Mercury is the key element to unlock the secret to immortality! Oh! Your Excellency President Xi! please give me funding! I can deliver for you, the world's first working quantum computer that can replaces the classical computer. Just nurture my research and academic career until I can retire comfortably as an emeritus professor at age 80, this is a very very very difficult research project, it needs a lots of time, manpower, resources and paper publications. Sounds convincing enough? Your University president/chancellor and your PhD supervisor are walking back to their offices, laughing. "True, true, as long as the head of a nation or a government cannot answer the question "From where does the industry comes from?" completely and verbally on the spot under 10 seconds, then he is a fool and a fool and his money soon part way!, So let us continue milk the government funding into the university coffer (allocations for kickback money to government officials and journal subscriptions)". A beggar, a scammer, a bullshitter and a thief = A Scientist-Professor.
A lot of what you describe is the product of bullying and personality disorders combined.

@BrisaMarie Thank you. I sure will.
Ugh… I have 2 professors in my grad school program that aren’t very kind or understanding. The rest I like, but I hate that I’m stuck w/ these 2 professors for 3 more semesters. Yes, I made some mistakes by misinterpreting their directions, but I gave myself a hard enough time on my own and it hurt my overall grade in the class. I miss being able to choose a different professor. It
This was very helpful. Thank you !
Of course!! Thank you!
Miss ma'am thank you for all these videos on the topic of grad school but I am so overwhelmed 😅 I wish there wasn't so much to consider 😭
I definitely feel you! It is all a lot of information. I think a good thing to remember is that you don't have to be prefect you just have to try your best. And even when things go wrong there's still a way to do it and be successful. So im sorry all this info is overwhelming! But maybe you can try to take only the things that are helpful for you today and then come back later when you are ready or interested in considering more things. I'll always be here and so will this channel! So it's okay if you take your time! Not to mention... i did my grad school without knowing most of this... and though it was a bumpy ride (ahahha) I did end up graduating. So please don't let me videos stress you out too much!! Thats not what I'm hoping to do! It's definitely okay to make mistakes and I promise things will still work out! *hugs*
Thank you so much
Of course! Thank you!!
Hi ! Many thanks for your videos :) About too long sentences, what I used to do a lot, one teacher told me once "one idea = one sentence". I try to apply it as much as possible and it turns my papers easier to read :)
Oh my goodness! I love that! It's so useful. Thank you for sharing cuz i will be using that for sure!
This is gold. I just completed my application at USC biomedical Eng. awaiting for results.
Oh my GOOODNESSSSS! Congrats! that is a huge step! Please keep me posted! *Fingers Crossed*
@ yes!! I am very optimistic that everything will go smoothly. Will do for sure!
Whoot!!
Thank you Marie. I really needed to hear this. I am a third year phd student and feel so stressed about publishing and finding new research ideas. Thank you for all your encouraging videos. I remember watching your videos on comps exam, which has been a great source of info and inspiration. keep it up and never give up. You will publish that paper soon 💕God bless you.
Thank you so much!!! I am so glad we are in this community together and we are here supporting each other! Thank you for being so encouraging!! We got this!!! <3
Heyyyy Doc! I have been gone a minute because I started my own PhD journey in July 2024 at National University Sanford College of Education!! I just received my 1st Dean's List Certificate for Summer Qtr 2024!! Your videos inspired me to seek a PhD program! I recommend you call the channel "Dear Future PhD," and your channel can be a love letter of support to those of us thinking about or pursuing a PhD. That way, all your content will reach all levels for PhD. You can totally get sponsors and partners. If you can get to at least 10,000 followers you I know that will help peak the interest of business. I'm rooting for you, Sis!! I will catch up with your videos soon! 👑😁📚🙏
Congrats on starting your journey!! DEANS LIST IS HUGE!! YOU ARE DOING SOOO WELL ALREADY! CONGRATS!! I am so happy to hear that my videos were helpful for you in following a phd path! Thats amazing! And thank you for your recommendations, these are really great ideas! <3 thank you for rooting for me and I appreciate you taking the time to share what you have been up to with me. I am so excited to hear more about what you do!
@BrisaMarie Absolutely!! We are all in this together, Sis!! 👑🩷😁👩💻
This type of writing is plagiarism. A group of works all put together by others.
Hi! So plagiarism is when you take someone else's writing and take credit for it. An annotated bibliography is a type of note taking to help students and researchers understand/remember what someone else is writing. And because they are bibliographies they cite their sources 100% of the time. Which is why it is not plagiarism.
Thanks for sharing about what research work looks like as a postdoc, it seems like such a blackbox to me as a PhD student. It's also nice to see that you feel confident in your expertise, even while starting a new project with new elements. Good luck with your research! Thank you for sharing the history of the mosque as well, so interesting!
Thank you so much! I am trying to so hard to figure out how to share more about research and keep it interesting. So it is really encouraging to hear that this video resonated with you! Thank you so much for leaving a comment and being so kind!! thank you!
Definitely interested in how to handle the academic hazing! Thank you for pointing it out!
I'm so glad it was helpful for you! And yes I need to make more videos about academic hazing! Though I do have videos about red flags and toxic traits in faculty. So if that is useful I can share that with you!
Hey, I passed my first comp exam, two more to go!! YOU know that museums have really discriminating history of Native Americans and people with disabilities. They were one of the spots for freak shows where disabled people of color were locked up in cages.... Much respect.
CONGRATS!!! THAT A HUGE DEAL! YOU ARE AMAZING! I love to hear as people progress! its soooo exciting! Yes! there is so much history on museums and really violent things! I try to teach classes that include that into the curriculum as much as i can! Thank you for commenting!
Scary. I’m glad you are safe.
Thank you!! I was pretty shaken up! I'm glad that's over lol
That was awesome. Thank you for sharing. I appreciate that you do a land acknowledgment at the beginning.❤️
Thank you so much!! And yes, I learned about land acknowledgements through my PhD program... and I think they make so much sense even in the digital space! so thank you!
where can i pop bottles and blaze canons on campus? i aint goin' unless i can get it poppin' there
This made me nostalgic for DC lol (I'm from Baltimore) but every time I go home for the holidays I remember how much I hate the weather even if I love my family. also free Palestine!
HAHAHAHA IT WAS SOOOO HOT WHEN I WAS THERE! but I totally understand. We were only there for 3 months and we miss it often... Especially DC foods like mumbo sauce!!! #FreePalestineAlways!
Brisa, this is the exciting part, the sweet spot of "not knowing"! You'll add interesting contributions based on your "sister outsider" position to your new objects of study. Go for it!
Thank you so much! I so genuinely appreciate your encouragement!! It is nice to have a community of people who are so positive!
✅ bring a pen and paper when you give a presentation
HAHAHA! Yes!!! And maybe a small thing to drink if you need to pause before answering a question or have a coughing fit. lol
Oh my gosh! I can't tell you how similar our life is after academia. I never planned for this....but I was just hired as an ASL Instructor for middle school and elementary school students at the Walled Lake School District. Even though my MA is in English, my concentration in Disability Advocacy and intermediary knowledge in ASL helped to progress to this position. Nowadays....I am studying more signs for ASL as I read a book for the future. Even though I work for the Center for Performance Arts and Learning, somehow....a part of myself matched with what the organization wants. So, how are your plans morphing as you become situated in this Postdoc field? It probably is off, but there are things you can finagle here and there to match with your futuristic goals. Let this be your new form of vocational academia. Learn and act with it. It might work out. I wish you the best!!
Its funny how we can just fall into our paths!! i love that we have so much in common and that I am not on this journey alone! ALSO! All the things you are sharing sound SO EXCITING! Congrats on everything you have done and will do! I really appreciate you sharing the things you are up to. I think that can help inspire people with similar backgrounds!! you know... as for morphing in the postdoc field... as of right now, I feel like I am still stumbling throug things but with a little more direction which is nice lol but i can't quite say definitiviely this is EXACTLY what I am doing or not... because I am trying to figure out what is it I want to do that I can do with the funding and time that I have. So its still a little tricky... but I am on a good path I feel! Wish you the best too!!!
Amaaazing!! So proud of you!!
Thank you so much!!!!
Brisa, you give details in your videos that are super important for us to know the challenges of these presentations and how to handle them as a pro. There is so much value in the content of your videos.
Agree.
Afrolatinidad and museums. Then you decided you didn't want to do that for the rest of your life. Brave content, and I love it. I dare say you help so many people with this information. I can relate to your story because this academic walk is not easy. Again, I love it.
@jhamdan2012 Thank you so much! You comment means sooo much to me! I am so happy to know these vlog are helpful.. cuz sometimes you feel a little vulnerable and wild recording yourself saying how you feel! so thank you!!
@Conersationwithgeorgemarrero thank you for your kind words. Someone looking to return to college for his grad degree, are there any tips or exercises to prepare the student for the magnitude of reading involved.
Hi! Congrats on starting this new education journey! thats a huge decision!!! i do have a reading and writing playlist that may be helpful, but starting off I would watch this video on reading strategies! th-cam.com/video/hhtFIvrzQdM/w-d-xo.html If you still have questions ASK AWAY! Just reading the title relaxed my shoulders. I'm newly back from the field and starting my diss(track)ertation I needed this!! Thanks, Brisa. <3
I am glad!!!!! Good luck on your Diss(track)ertation hahahahhaha You got this!

I am so sorry that you wasted time and money, because I know thats hard!!!! From experience i also did most.... if not all these mistakes....... so im glad that you think it can help others!! I appreciate you leaving a positive comment ! Thank you!!!
I need two published articles and two submitted ones to defend my PhD. I passed the halfway mark (two out of four years) of my contract period two months ago and I am sooo stressed about this. I submitted my first article last week and I'm terrified of getting rejected. Thanks for reminding me that just getting to the point of writing something submittable is already an achievement. And that good research takes time. And that the academic world is also just pretty fucked up lol. Hang in there!

Hi, thank you for sharing. You are right. People don't share the tragic in their life, and we understand why they don't but if they did it would help others. I just want to share I have a family member who has his PhD and has published and he is doing well but in the beginning he was rejected quite a few times. So, keep going if it was easy it would not be worth pursuing. That is what separates a PhD from those beautiful people we love that don't hold a degree.
Thank you so much for sharing your perspective! It was so powerful! And will encourage sooo many people that read it! I appreciate you taking the time to comment something so positive. Thank you!
Thank you! I needed to hear this ❤ I just got rejected from a publication for, essentially, my research being too radical. It made me so mad, but the rejection and your video has motivated me to keep going. Thank you!
What? That's absolutely ridiculous. What was your research about? I'm curious.
This is (unfortunately sooo common) i am glad that you feel motivated after watching this video! We have to remember there is a journal out there for us!! We just have to find it! Thank you for commenting and I'm glad we can be in this together!
@@TheRenaissanceAmazon They had an issue with my framing. I made the cause (using extant literature) that a youth gang has benefits for its members. I also mentioned the negative consequences, but they thought my framing was problematic.
@@BrisaMarie Thank you! I submitted the paper to a new journal. We'll see what they say. Let me know if you have any thoughts. Some of the more "radical" journals have lower impact, etc. scores. I personally care more about the work being published because, when I was working in the community, it would have been super helpful to have the data in my report, which is why I did the paper in the first place. However, I wounder if the journal impacts the job search? I didn't think I wanted to go into academia, but now I am considering it.
this is so real!
Thank you! Cuz for sec I felt like I was losing it lol hahahaha I appreciate your comment!
I feel this as well. A lot of my colleagues during grad school published and/or got into postdocs and jobs, and amidst senior care and COVID, I didn't have the bandwidth to do publications. I've done a lot of public humanities and speaking opportunities, but alas, they're not seen in the same way. Hang in there!
Thank you so much! I totally feel you too!!!!! Becoming an academic through a world pandemic!!!! Thats still a lot to process for me lol I appreciate you taking the time to comment and sharing some encouragement with me!!!! Thank you!!
What would be perfect grad schools for students in business field
Hi! sooo it depends what you want to do... if you are interested in researching things related to the economy or how a very specific part of business function then you could get a research degree in things like, economics, history, or anthropology. BUT if you are interested in learning skills to run a business or to do a specific job then you may pursue a professional degree like a MBA! I do have a video that might be helpful to decide -- th-cam.com/video/240ktIknShE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=zE90vKyxI--00C3k hope this is helpful!
