In love and solidarity with those in Palestine/Falestine, Congo, Sudan, Haiti, Tigray, Artsakh, and the Uyghurs in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. May we work to divest from war and end all genocide.
ON LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT:
As I continue to work to be a better person, I want to make sure the work and creative projects I make are never at the expense of others. The places I visit and the experiences I have, ESPECIALLY in this video, take place on unceded territory of Indigenous peoples. In solidarity with their struggle for sovereignty, I have included land acknowledgements below and within my video. But land acknowledgements aren't enough! So please check out the resources below on the Indigenous communities who lands I visited!

    how do you deal with gaslighting in the academia and toxic hierarchical research. If graduated students have a Stockholm Syndrome for appeasing culture, should you also receive such kind of culture if your not accustomed to such with your personal standards or morals of what educators should be. How to address this in academic settings who are fond of traumatizing learners for what they call standards.

    • @BrisaMarie
      @BrisaMarie 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Academia can be toxic and gaslighting is real!! i think you are asking a lot of questions that are important but have many different answers. For me I try to separate myself form people that I think are mentally harmful. This sometimes has the consequence that things may be more difficult later in the future but to me its worth it. For others it may not be. I also noticed when you find a community of people who are not toxic it can actually make things easier so again to me its worth ditching the toxic people and replacing them with non-toxic people even if it is my advisor! i have a video that talks about how I suggest people handle switching their advisors and responding to toxicness but it may not be the best answer for you! Please always trust your gut! Heres the video! th-cam.com/video/n49wmVfyPkA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ocvcCqh5XjCORaen

    • @BrisaMarie

      Hi! so it depends, but in general they are kind of their own thing. So if harvard has a specialized certificate in diversity leadership or business after the 2-3 months you will have that certification but it wouldn't be the same as a degree. That doesn't mean they are unimportant because they can really be helpful with getting raises or switching fields. But they just aren't accredited in the same way degrees are!

For me I moved to two new countries, had to learn a new language and had to pay for it all by myself (so I was working part time through out the process) this, in addition to trying to figure out what it was I wanted to do and building time to think and write really felt like a lot for me. Hey Dr. Flores! I love this video! You are so real and we need more transparency with people once receiving their PhD and the journey towards achieving success once venturing out into the "Real World!" I know you will absolutely find your way into exactly what your heart is yearning to do for your career. I totally understand trying to figure out what to do when what you thought you wanted to do is not it anymore! Keep going, searching, talking it out, and asking others in different careers with a PhD. Nonprofits, corporations, and governmental companies all can use your expertise somehow! I can't wait to watch you find your passion in the ideal position waiting just for you to connect and thrive in the blink of an eye!

    Hi Brisa :) I have a question about "Hidden Curriculum." For example in the Phd in Culture&Perf the handbook says only 4 core classes (200, 201, 202, 204). What's the hidden curriculum? Do they make you take electives you don't want to take? Do they kind of choose which classes you take or do you have full control over which classes you take? Which electives do they make you take?

    • @BrisaMarie
      @BrisaMarie 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi! Thank you for being patient with me. So a hidden curriculum more times than not describes things that are about the department/university's culture or personalities and not actual classes. As for WACD the only classes you have to take are the ones you already identified. From there it is all about what makes you happy! Which is nice. I took mostly art history courses while I was there! So you really do have free range! A better example of a hidden curriculum is : as a student you are not required to publish to graduate and there aren't any resources in the department to tell you how to publish or to support your publication process. However, a department gives more money to students who do publish but you wouldnt know that until someone tells you. so that would be more of an example of a hidden curriculum. Because its technically not required... but really does impact your success!

    Do I get it correctly that you can apply for TA since you're accepted at grad school? Please, correct me if I'm wrong 🙏

    • @BrisaMarie
      @BrisaMarie 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi! So every school is different. Some may have a more formal process and maybe in that case it probably depends on that process. Some departments guarentee a TA-ship the moment you get on campus... other dont lol. But I didn't techincally apply. What I did was informally email different people to see if I could secure a TA-ship once I got onto campus. And it luckily worked out for me and I was able to get hired because I was reaching out to the people in charge of the class I wanted to teach. I think being proactive can never hurt, but it technically doesn't always work.

    Totally hear and feel this! I came into my PhD *not* thinking I would pursue academia, but I've more recently started to appreciate some of the affordances of being a professor and being "supported" by the resources of a university. I feel like I'm really at a fork in the road where I see both directions being full of possibilities, and whether I'm leaning one way or the other really changes the questions I ask, the experiences and skills I try to develop, the work and relationships I prioritize. I LOVE the way you ended this conversation thinking about possibilities. There are countless ways to do the work we want to do in the world, we just have to be bold enough to imagine and enact those ways.

    Where can you apply for grants?

    • @BrisaMarie
      @BrisaMarie 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi! So every degree and program has different places scholarships are held. For the most part I would suggest starting with googling things related to you and your degree. I would also ask your school if they are familiar with any scholarships that some or many of their students have earned while in the program. (Some schools have grants in the program and/or university. Other require you to apply outside of the univeristy) Here is a video on how I find grants, but it will be slightly different for your since you are in a MBA program : th-cam.com/video/oJ4_J8dfZ18/w-d-xo.htmlsi=0iBNEFsPNfQSyVet

      OF course! Also if you are unfamilar there are also scholarships for MBAs when I applied to MBA school (i got rejected from the school but actually won a scholarship lol). There is the consortium scholarship for MBAs and FORTE i think also has some scholarships. Not that your asked, but just in case it is helpful!

    Hi, I need some assistance from you. So I applied for the Unsubsidized loan and my college received it but is yet to confirm the amount of aid to be provided, the maximum loan that I can get from it is $20,500. However, my program costs around $59,000 for 1 academic year. Since it's not enough, should I apply for the grad plus loan requesting $38,500?. Also, when should I apply for a grad plus loan? after my university notifies me regarding the aid provided via Unsubsidized? or can I apply right away?

    • @BrisaMarie
      @BrisaMarie 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi! So I can't give financial advice because I am not a financial expert and every circumstance is different. Plus each school has its own requirements and policies. But I can tell you what I did and what some options may be. I requested all the loans I could my first year just to make sure I had enough money. THEN after my semester started and I had a TAship and a job I was able to retroactively reduce my loans to only EXACTLY what I need. So in that way I didn't have to take all the loans I asked for and my loan amount was able to decrease. But had I needed it, I would have had access to the maximum amount. I think when in doubt it is alway best to speak directly with the financial aid people at your institution but that was how I handled it. I hope that was helpful.

    Hiya! Can you talk more about the different research styles available in grad programs? You mentioned looking for a program that includes visual analysis in this video, but what are some other examples? I also am not a huge fan of reading, but would want to gain research through experience like interviews perhaps. Not sure if that's even an option. Thank you!

I do have this video on methods ( th-cam.com/video/UdPhSD-O4eA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=YUhWb-6TDM8Br8FQ ) but im not sure if it will answer all your questions. If you watch it and still have questions would you mind commented again. And that way I can try and make a follow up video that really gets into the weeds of methods to be more helpful?
