  • This probably the weirdest day ever. Join me as I learn about how to get a job at a University of California (UC) school. I will also share the academic job advice that I learned through a workshop at the University of California, Irvine. Though this vlog has some unexpected turns! Please join me in this Day in the life of a postdoctoral fellow at a UC!
    ON LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT:
As I continue to work to be a better person, I want to make sure the work and creative projects I make are never at the expense of others. The places I visit and the experiences I have, ESPECIALLY in this video, take place on unceded territory of Indigenous peoples. In solidarity with their struggle for sovereignty, I have included land acknowledgements below and within my video. But land acknowledgements aren't enough! So please check out the resources below on the Indigenous communities who lands I visited!
The UCI campus is located on the homelands of the Acjachemen and Tongva peoples, who - in the face of ongoing settler colonialism - continue to claim their place and act as stewards of their ancestral lands as they have for the past 8,000 years.

Hi! I am doing an in-person interview for a post-doc in Ohio at the end of February. Do you have any tips? And, has your post-doc experience been positive so far? I am scared, lol.

Hi! So my postdoc did not have interviews but I do have some suggestions that were told to me when I started my postdocs that may be useful for you!
      - You are not a just a grad student anymore, you are a researcher, an academic, and a scholar... don't doubt your research, don't doubt your intellegence, and don't try to be perfect.
      - its okay not to know everything as long as you know how to figure things out. (Which you do lol)
      - if they are asking for you (in this case they are bcuz you got the interview) they want you there. Believe that and make sure you approach the conversation accordingly. They aren't necesarily trying to tear you apart they are trying to confirm that they are making the right decision... and they are.
      - also ... if it doesn't work out you can still be successful!
I know they may seem a little cliche but they really helped me out a lot when I started. Sorry if this wasn't enough. I hope others comment with their advice too!

    Hi Brisa,
I know you made a video in the past which entailed accepting your PhD offer but without funding. Can you direct me to the link of that video? I would like to know how did you manage to start your PhD the first year without funding.

Hi! Yes! I have three different video that talk about that topic in some way. I am going to include all three just in case, but I am going to order them in what i think is more relevant to least relevant order!

@BrisaMarie thank you Brisa. These videos were the most important ones you published because without funding, it is extremely challenging to finish the program on time.

@jhamdan2012 thank you for that affirmation!!! I do agree! A lack of Funding can make grad school feel impossible!!! Thank you for your comments :)
