    OMG.....I am in a similar dilemma. Come this May, I will graduate with an MA. Along with that, I am applying into several English/Disability Study doctoral, PhD programs (ie. Wayne State University, Ohio State, and the University of Hawaii at Manoa). However, the thought of....if I do not get in, springs into my mind. It is true that I can become an adjunct at a community college, but I wonder if there are other choices to look at. Pray in mind, that I am also handicapped, making me reach out to sectors, that are too far, as, possibly, inaccessible.
    Next semester, I will have an internship with Detroit Disability Power. If all goes well, I might want to work with them, at times, if I venture into academia, and so on. However, the thoughts are a bit misconstrued, and strained, at the same time. Have you ever been in this position, of thinking about not getting in, as you progress into a PhD program, in the past?

    • @BrisaMarie
      @BrisaMarie  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi! Firstly! thank you so much for sharing your experiences because I know 10000% you are not alone! And you sharing your reality will help others on this channel feel like they are in a community that resembles their own experiences! Secondly, all of your thoughts and concerns are SUPER real and valid.
      I did have fears of not getting in and feeling behind. Yes, with a masters you can 100% teach and even become full faculty at a community college and have a pretty good teaching career. With a masters you could also work in non-profits, community organizing, and the government. All have their pros and cons but you are definitely qualified for a diverse range of jobs. So try not to stress to much about if you can do other things (because you definitely will be able to!) and maybe start thinking about what skills you have that can guide you into different fields that are fulfilling to you!
      As for PhDs, many people have to apply 6times before they get. I got rejected from every school that I applied to EXCEPT for one which was UCLA lol. Rejection is common and NOT AT ALL a reflection of your capacity or value as a potential academic. I don't know if you have seen it, but I also have a grad admissions playlist that can help illuminate the PhD application process. if that might be helpful I will link it here : m.th-cam.com/play/PLY-K7nK2wQ2WeWF9EfkwZFapB1fpjV2he.html
      I understand how having a disability can make everything way more stressful because of all the extra life planning you have to consider. But, grad school... and life more generally is not linear, and I strongly believe there is time (always time) to go back to grad school so even if you don't get in this year, you can still get a phd!!! I didn't get in my first year of applying and it happens. It is also totally okay and normal to go back and forth about next steps since soooo much of it is basically out of your control. So try to be gentle with yourself and trust that if you really want to get a PhD you will make it happen!!!
      I hope this was helpful.

      Hi! For you it may not be! For me I moved to two new countries, had to learn a new language and had to pay for it all by myself (so I was working part time through out the process) this, in addition to trying to figure out what it was I wanted to do and building time to think and write really felt like a lot for me. HOWEVER it doesn't have to be like that and for many people ESPECIALLY if you are doing research from past projects that you did in other degrees it can be very straightforward and simple!

    Brisa, congrats. I have a question about the conferred degree. Does it come with a certificate? What about the transcripts, because usually students get transcripts for masters, not sure if that's the case with PhD.

    • @BrisaMarie
      @BrisaMarie  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you! And Yes! When your degree is conferred that means you will get your physical diploma (though they often take a few months to deliever) With that said, if you need proof of graduation/degree completion for a job you can get an official letter from you universty stating you have completed your degree and will receive your diploma soon. You still get transcripts, but I feel like (i could be wrong so I will updated you if I am) BUT I feel like no one really will ask for your PhD transcripts... it feels like the degree tends to be sufficient... but that may change for a different field ... I am not sure!

  • @TheDivaDivine
    @TheDivaDivine 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    What exactly is a post doctoral position. Is it a job where you can do research in your field without having to teach? Can you accept more than one post doctorate position?

    • @BrisaMarie
      @BrisaMarie  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Howdy!!
      I plan on making an entire video answering your questions because they are soooo important! But I will say briefly, post-doctoral positions are generally transition/temporary professional development positions only available to people with a PhD. Each post-doc has its own requirements and expectations, some you may just be doing research while others you may be teaching, or traveling, or something else all together! With that each post-doc has its own rules, though generally you cannot accept two paying post-docs at the same time. With that said there are often loop-holes to that rule and is best decided on a case by case basis. I hope that is helpful!
