  • Today is another day sharing a day in the life of working at the Getty museum but I am reflecting on my post-grad life after graduating from My PhD! Let me know if you have any questions about my job at the Getty Museum!
In love and solidarity with those in Palestine/Falestine, Congo, Sudan, Haiti, Tigray, Artsakh, and the Uyghurs in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. May we work to divest from war and end all genocide.
    ON LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT:
As I continue to work to be a better person, I want to make sure the work and creative projects I make are never at the expense of others. The places I visit and the experiences I have, ESPECIALLY in this video, take place on unceded territory of Indigenous peoples. In solidarity with their struggle for sovereignty, I have included land acknowledgements below and within my video. But land acknowledgements aren't enough! So please check out the resources below on the Indigenous communities who lands I visited!
Tovaangar (Los Angeles basin, So. Channel Islands; They Getty Museum)
We acknowledge the Tongva peoples as the traditional land caretakers of Tovaangar (Los Angeles basin, So. Channel Islands) and we are grateful to be visitors on this land. We pay our respects to Honuukvetam (Ancestors), 'Ahiihirom (Elders), and 'eyoohiinkem (our relatives/relations) past, present and emerging.

I had a similar reaction. The way these institutions are treating students has really made me rethink my future some. I’m still moving forward with my phd but being in academia has really removed itself from post doc life

Valid! I love that you are still moving forward with your education as a PhD but are brave enough to consider other pathways... as you see I am still very much grappling with that but your resolve is inspiring! Thank you for commenting!

Thanks Dr. Flores (again congrats on the PhD) for always being honest with us. Sometimes the hardest thing to do is to tell a superior they’re wrong when they’re wrong but where would society be if it didn’t? That being said, thanks to my ex I have learned to argue with people without them even realizing so I don’t get abused unjustly.

Hey Dr. Flores! I love this video! You are so real and we need more transparency with people once receiving their PhD and the journey towards achieving success once venturing out into the "Real World!" I know you will absolutely find your way into exactly what your heart is yearning to do for your career. I totally understand trying to figure out what to do when what you thought you wanted to do is not it anymore! Keep going, searching, talking it out, and asking others in different careers with a PhD. Nonprofits, corporations, and governmental companies all can use your expertise somehow! I can't wait to watch you find your passion in the ideal position waiting just for you to connect and thrive in the blink of an eye!

Totally hear and feel this! I came into my PhD *not* thinking I would pursue academia, but I've more recently started to appreciate some of the affordances of being a professor and being "supported" by the resources of a university. I feel like I'm really at a fork in the road where I see both directions being full of possibilities, and whether I'm leaning one way or the other really changes the questions I ask, the experiences and skills I try to develop, the work and relationships I prioritize. I LOVE the way you ended this conversation thinking about possibilities. There are countless ways to do the work we want to do in the world, we just have to be bold enough to imagine and enact those ways.

Thank you for your comment! I felt it to my CORE! Yes exactly we have to be creative and imagine new pathways to get to the desired path!!!! I am happy that we are going through these things together in community and I really appreciate you taking the time to comment and share your feelings! Thank you!

Wow! You are really doing such a great job thinking ahead! Its okay that you don't know many independent scholars yet. You are still very early in your journey! And honestly they are very hard to find, or I wouldn't have asked for help in this video (ahhaha). I am so happy that his channel is helpful. Please let me know if you have any questions about anything! I am so happy you are a part of this community!

I agree with many of your points. While pursuing my master's degree, the university did not support students and would create and enforce policies that stymied them and left them with a ton of debt. I was sure I would immediately pursue my doctorate, but now I'm not so sure. If I can't help students, I don't want to hinder them in the name of academic welfare and playing the game. My morals mean more to me than that. I am no longer interested in achieving faculty status.

I had the same response when I saw the vicious beating and arresting of students and faculty at UCI. I was shocked at the barbarity and degeneracy. Idk if I want to be in these institutions. I'm still going to get my PhD but Idk if I want to be *in* Academia

Hi Brisa :) I have a question about "Hidden Curriculum." For example in the Phd in Culture&Perf the handbook says only 4 core classes (200, 201, 202, 204). What's the hidden curriculum? Do they make you take electives you don't want to take? Do they kind of choose which classes you take or do you have full control over which classes you take? Which electives do they make you take?

    • @BrisaMarie
      @BrisaMarie  13 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

Hi! Thank you for being patient with me. So a hidden curriculum more times than not describes things that are about the department/university's culture or personalities and not actual classes. As for WACD the only classes you have to take are the ones you already identified. From there it is all about what makes you happy! Which is nice. I took mostly art history courses while I was there! So you really do have free range!
A better example of a hidden curriculum is :
as a student you are not required to publish to graduate and there aren't any resources in the department to tell you how to publish or to support your publication process. However, a department gives more money to students who do publish but you wouldnt know that until someone tells you. so that would be more of an example of a hidden curriculum. Because its technically not required... but really does impact your success!
