    You’re incredibly thoughtful and forward-thinking in all you do with your dogs. You must have really done your research prior to getting basenjis. Your dogs were lucky you knew about the importance of this counter-conditioning while they were still puppies. It’s just wonderful how you help other basenji owners know what to expect and how to manage and train for the unique characteristics of this breed. You do a great job of filming and I loved seeing all the examples of typical basenji greetings. It is fascinating to see you work with your basenjis. It brings back memories of our basenjis, Emmy and Howdy, of thirty years ago. They were challenging for sure, but also unique and a lot of fun, with two very distinct personalities. Your basenji whose ears repeatedly lie back in a happy expression reminds us of Howdy, our male-just so full of joy and happy to meet new friends.

    Hi, thanks for these informations. Now I am having a little bit of trouble with my 5-months-old basenji puppy: he doesn't have any form of resource guarding, however he still tends to bite even though we aren't playing and he even spilled blood from my nose and fingers. I immediately stop when he starts biting me during playtime, redirecting his attention to a toy he can bite but it isn't working. Do you have any advices?

    • @oringomakenabasenjitrainin6407
      @oringomakenabasenjitrainin6407 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      that stage will pass soon, and it sounds like you are already doing the right thing. I would advise engaging the puppy in short training sessions with food, to teach him focusing attention on you and engaging with you in fun ways that is not biting. usually when food is involved puppy will be less likely to bite and play and more interested to see how he can get the food. simple games to reward puppy looking at you, hand touching, sitting, following you, coming by name etc. this way he will learn that there are better ways to engage with you than biting. also often non stop biting can be a sign of tiredness and that the puppy needs a nap. anyway a good idea is to have a safe confined space where you can leave the puppy to stop him bothering you and attacking you when you dont have time to engage with him and actively manage him. good luck with your puppy!

      Thank you so much for your advices! I have started doing short training sessions since I got him and I am using our balcony after removing all the plants as his area while I am not at home or I need him to be confined. Of our two basenjis (35 years ago), it was our female who exhibited this behavior. Sadly, at the time, the advice i received was to punish it. In those days “dominance” theory was the norm. Since punishment obviously didn’t work, we too had to accept and work around it. Our male was easy-going, like Oringo. A real joy and delight he was, “Howdy.” He would yodel his happiness upon seeing an old friend (e.g. his puppy kindergarten teacher). While we still had our basenjis we moved from the suburbs to a house in the country with a huge yard. On the first evening there, Howdy sat down on the front step and let out a great big, joyful yodel! Emmy was very sweet too, when she wasn’t in “wild dog” mode. Thank you for posting this thoughtful and important video! ❤

    What an incredibly rich life for your basenjis! Loved seeing contented dogs living a games and rewards-based life with lots of training, love and enrichment. Our two basenjis were my first dogs, over 35 years ago. They were challenging “first dogs,” and we made many training mistakes. I wish I knew then what I know now about positive reinforcement and relationship-based training. I love your set-up for them with a large exercise pen, couch/bed and crate, plus an area to relieve themselves and a big variety of toys! I also love that you give them time for walks and training individually. That’s so important in a multi-dog household, tho I did not know it when I had my two basenjis. Thank you for so beautifully filming a typical day in the life of your lucky dogs!

    My basenjis never would swim and one would not even cross a 1 inch stream of water on a path. She could climb, also. No dog odor, quiet and beautiful. Energetic and more cat like. Fastidiously clean. Know, however, that they are independent and not motivated to please the same way as other dogs.

    Something funny, I saw your one Basenji do what mine does. To the lady in the red sweater, the dog sniffed her breath. My company sometimes are worried my Basenji will lick their face, when she only wants to sniff the breath. Is this a common thing with Basenji's? And what does it mean?

    • @karenhutchison1002

    Never approach a sleeping dog. Isn't this obvous? I cant believe you call this dog aggression when it is normal for any abinal (human included) to be annoyed and vecome like this when not allowed to sleep though. Dogs are not toys. Have the dogs sleep where they are safe secure and not gling to be bithered.. ensure they get adequate sleep and do not tortire your dogs in this way, please. Aggression here is from the owner and i föund ypur behaviours very inappropriate. it is gow to create a genuonely acgressive dog to do this. If you need to wake someone call their name and if they wake up then they will wake but anylne between sleep and wake will not have full control and not be as capable of maintaining control when provoked whuch at least you recognised you were doing. i think what you showed is on the spectrum of abuse. if any dog is not happy with something respect their communication and gakn their trust and definitely avaoid confrontation. Do not let ypur dog go to sleep somdwhere you arent happy for it to sleep. For a dog to have to sleep where an owner is gling to touch or prod it when half asleep will mean dog cant fully complete the sleep behaviour. Guarding can be a behabiour in any dog. A video on how to create aggression in a dog to my mind. But its good if ypu make the point not to wake a sleeöing dog of any kind and good if you tell visitors not to pet your dog, or dven make eye contact actually unlesscthe doc is indicating they are happy for this to happen.

      This family are one of the most experienced Basenji trainers around. She literally said at the start of the video that they were "inducing the behaviour" to give an educational and demonstrative video to show less experienced or potential new Basenji owners about this particular trait, so they can avoid unintentionally inducing this behaviour in their own Basenji. Watch some of their other videos before you get on your high horse and start criticizing them.

    You dont ukderstand this bevaviour, or their communication, you rag and provoke a dog but any dog between or in sleep anaesthesia will be disinhibized.. if your dog is sleeping leave it alone. this is owner aggression, nit the dog. if you do need tp wake a dog do it by calling their name or some such.. to wake any sleeping dog and to dosregard its clmmunicatoon like this is asking tonget bitten so i dont think ypu shpuld be showing this on yputibe. tjis to my mind is a form of abuse.

      you are right, unfortunately its extremely rare without horizontal bars, which is a shame. we were lucky to find a local supplier in Melbourne who sell these for animal stock, imported from China. But they dont ship it anywhere. I have only seen baby playpens that are usually without horizontal bars, but they dont make them high enough. If you are lucky to have a climber, but not a jumper, then you might try the baby playpens...

    My Basenji (Zappi) goes crazy when he meets other dogs and especially small black dogs. he has a blackout and it is incredibly difficult to calm him down after such an encounter. do you have any tips? God vlog btw

    • @oringomakenabasenjitrainin6407
      @oringomakenabasenjitrainin6407 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I had the same with the rescues I was fostering. The best way is to catch the moment when the basenji saw the dog but the distance is still too big for the b to get into that fixated state, and then redirect their attention to you with treats. Then gradually decrease the distance. But with the rescue I had, he switched from calm to crazy in miliseconds, instantly as soon as he saw a dog, so it was not possible to catch that moment. Here is what I was doing: I was taking him to a dog park but we stayed outside at a distance. The moment he was getting into that blackout mode when seeing the dogs I would strongly control the leash and do a 'bear hug'. There are variations of that hold you can try whats more comfortable for you, e. g holding one hand firmly under the collar at the back, the other hand wrapped around his chest. or both hands wrapper around him tightly so he cant escape and his movements are restricted. I was holding him like this while he was frustrated and wiggling and trying to get out. I would firmly maintain the hold and not letting go, talking to him in a calm voice. this can take 10 minutes but eventually the dog gives up and stops resisting, and calm down. the moment he stops, I would praise and let him go immediately. Quickly he would get pumped up again by looking at the dogs, then I repeat. usually with every next time he would calm down quicker. by repeating this excersise several days his reaction to other dogs reduced in intensity and he would calm down quicker and eventually would be able to listen and even take treats. good luck with your boy!

    @Octane_au 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Your explanation in the beginning was spot on. It's very rare my B will chase anything unless he's fixated on it, and even then, if I throw it more than a few meters away from him, he just looks at me like I'm the idiot lol. He'll bring back a toy once or twice if he want's to play tug with it. Otherwise he'll watch it with mild disinterest until it stops moving and then run back without it to play with me instead. I haven't trained fetch at all though. Something I do need to work on is "Stop" and "Off" though. He's usually gotta be told 6 times before he'll listen. ha ha

    This channel is useful for me because my dog is a mutt but has a very high "wolfiness" score (aka high primitive dog genetics) so is very similar to your Basenjis. I like that you have so much fun while training. Also, were you ever gymnast? If not, you would probably have been a good one. You have the right body type to be a good gymnast

    Hello Ma'am, I'm looking forward to your next film, I see how much heart and work you put into it, I know from my own experience how much patience it costs me with Hugo (he's the only one who's smart, but he's a flax) but I'm not going any further, it's a good lesson you showed today, I'm sure I'll apply it to Hugo's lazy days as well .Kind regards 😊

    Great advice. I had an extremely smart tri girl. Almost human. She passed one year ago this month at 16. Feels like my mother died again. So empathetic, and intuitive. Almost supernatural. She was very, very well behaved with a fantastic personality. My all-time favorite being. Love you Sensen. My girlie. Thanks for your videos and channel. All the best to you and yours....
